What? Let's see... Milan, Cousy, Russell, West, Havlicek, Kareem, Magic, Bird, McHale, Worthy, KG, Ray, Pierce, Gasol, Dirk.
Yup... just a bunch of gritty lunchpail guys drafted in the mid-to-late 1st round.
Only guy this argument even possibly applies to is Kobe, who would be a #1 overall in the context of today's drafting.
Not sure I understand the last paragraph
If Kobe played a year of college ball at a random school, I would bet myself that he goes 1-2 depending upon the draft and probably #1. Certainly 1 or 2 in this last draft. Higher than Russell but perhaps Towns can be argued either way.
The obvious big reason he slipped and teams as high as the Celtics almost picked him is because he didn't have 1 year of college ball to showcase his skills.
In 1996 it was still a big man's game but today their is no big bias against guards and players have an opportunity to show their skills in college ball.
Kobe would have done better in college than Wiggins and many other wings since he could shoot the ball at a young age.
I doubt Kobe picked over Anthony Davis but he would have been picked over most #1 picks since 1997 if he played a year of college ball.
