Joe Dumars Expected To Eventually Become GM Of Pelicans

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Tue Jan 12, 2016 12:23 am

Joe Dumars is widely expected to eventually become general manager of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Dumars has a close relationship with Tom Benson...

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Well, his first handful of years with us were spectacular, so maybe he's regenerated some good luck and will get the Pellies moving in the right direction.

Just make sure you fire him after five years before he gets all settled in...

Curious to see how he does, May answer some questions on whether he can build a team in today's NBA or if he caught some really good luck here.

Anyone starting with Davis as the first stone should be able to do a reasonable job:

Defensive C
Stretch 4
Multi skilled Wings
Drive & Kick PG

The drama is that Asik, Evans & Gordon just aren't mentally right IMO.

They're not built like SJ - driven by something internal.

Rhyno is probably the best fitting piece they have but he's gonna be a FA

Offer him Dre and KCP for Davis.

Take Asik off his hands for two future first rounders.

I wouldn't trade Dre st8 up. Davis has injury concerns too, Dre isn't that far off from Davis imo.

I think hes better then what they have, it could be a good fit. Be interesting to see how he would do with a team that should be better then they are. Has a lot of high paid players. Year he took over the Pistons, Grant Hill was on his way out and a lot of other players were basically at the end of their contracts.

Worth a shot. If Billy King could hang onto the Nets after that chop-shop job he did, anythings possible.

Assuming both were 100% healthy Davis is the better building block...but he's never had a season where he's been 100% healthy.

Dre for 75 games

Vs

Davis for 65 games

I think this time he has a clean slate, no pressure and already a sure Superstar. He'll probably turn that organization around pretty quickly through the Draft and eventually Free Agency. This summer he'll have a high pick and will likely draft the right guy. He's better at the mid lottery picks. I'd like to see how he does at the trade department. He'll definitely have a better scouting program at NOLA. Pistons scouting didn't become this good until SVG took over.

They need to trade Tyreke, stretch Asik, and let EG walk if he's asking for something more.

Start with Jrue and Davis. That's a good starting point as any for a newly hired GM. Alvin Gentry can stay too, since he never had the personnel to run the 7SOL offense.

Can't be too much worse than what they had there. Dumars was a decent evaluator of talent so they shouldn't waste too many more drafts.

I’m sure Joe has learned from his mistakes (Gordon, Villanueva, Iverson, Smith) and will build a solid team around Davis. I’m actually looking forward to seeing what JD can do elsewhere.

I don't see any reason to think Joe couldn't have learned from his mistakes here. If he had a bad scouting department in Detroit who's fault was that? However, I wish Joe well.

Dumars had the right vision but he picked the wrong players. In 2009 he envisioned positionless basketball with floor spacers- which is a strategy everyone is going to now. The problem was both CV and BG were crap players. Josh Smith was just a desperation move to make the playoffs at all costs to save his job. Without the pressure from Gores to make the playoffs- we wouldve been looking at a roster of Knight/KCP/Middleton/Monroe/Drummond, which ironically enough could've been good enough to make the playoffs 2 years ago.

With an owner that believes in him, Dumars wont be compelled to make desperate moves that end up badly. I think he will do well in NOLA.

The problem isn't not having the personnel to run the 7SOL offense. The problem is wanting to run that stupid offense in the first place. It's also stupid to take a superstar PF who is dynamite from the mid post/elbow area and the first thing you want to do is turn him into more of a 3pt shooter.

I think it's less the "forced" offense, rather, I think Gentry wants Davis to be a super-Amare from his Suns days. Which is a good start as any. And Jrue as a lesser Nash.

I can't really fault Gentry for having that crazy vision for his system.

Gentry is a moron and who hired him is a super moron
