Source tells ESPN the Cavs have traded Joe Harris to ORL w/ a protected 2017 pick for a future protected 2020 pick. Will save CLE $3 mill

The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired the Portland Trail Blazers’ protected 2020 second round pick from the Orlando Magic in exchange for guard Joe Harris, the Sacramento Kings’ 2017 protected second round pick, owned by the Cavaliers, and cash, Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin announced on Tuesday, January 12. The Cavs roster now stands at 14.

This season, Harris appeared in five games for the Cavs and 10 games for the Canton Charge.

He was originally selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round (33rd overall pick) of the 2014 NBA Draft.

On Tuesday, Harris underwent successful surgery in Indianapolis on his right foot for excision of 5th metatarsal apophysis.

Joe Harris also underwent successful surgery on right foot and is likely out for the season, league sources say. #Cavs save money on deal.

Apparently it's Sacramento's 2017 2nd rounder.

Both second-round picks involved in the deal are protected 31-55, so really the Magic are getting cash from this.

What a weird trade. The 2017 pick from Sacramento is protected for picks 31-55, otherwise extinguished. Right now the Kings are at pick 40, and I doubt they improve so much that they pick 56 in 2017(Clippers this year.) The Blazers pick is also protected 31-55, but at least 3 years later.

So we basically took cash from them in exchange for saving them some luxury tax space this year, while giving them a 2020 pick that could convey. I wonder how much cash???

2017 second round draft pick from Sacramento
Sacramento's 2017 2nd round pick to Cleveland (via Boston) protected for selections 31-55 (if this pick falls within its protected range and is therefore not conveyed, then Sacramento's obligation to Cleveland will be extinguished) [Boston-Sacramento, 2/24/2011; Boston-Cleveland, 9/25/2014]

Did they take his 5th metatarsal into storage in case AG needs one in the future?

The trade is not wierd. What we did was take on Joe Harris's guaranteed money for cash. The picks are involved because we have to trade something away, and Henni probably didn't want to be sort of a 2nd to trade around in deals like this hence him asking for a protected 2nd back (which will never be conveyed). We waived Harris as he just had season ending surgery and has a team option for next year (which will obviously not be taken up).

Orlando adds a bit of salary on to this year, but gets $$$ back (probably around 1 to 2 million as they save 3 million from the trade)

Cleveland gets a roster spot free for the future and saves some cash.

We should only look at this as Henny is working the phones and being active regardless of the transaction.
