Sorry but there's just something still super cool about KG and Dirk matched up and guarding each other.

Has anyone seen The Revenant? It was a good movie but I considered it fairly disappointing. My expectations going in were extremely high. The trailer was one of the best I've ever seen and the story had high potential.

Spoiler:
It was a good movie that accomplished the rare thing of making violence and poverty utterly unappealing rather than glamorous. Still, it had several flaws. There was too much show-off cinematography and direction which had to be expected given the team behind the film. It was overly long. Most importantly for a film with a few words it still contained too much dialogue. In the final confrontation the screenwriter and director doubted that the audience would figure out what was going through DiCaprio's head and instead had the actors voice the words. It really weakened the conclusion the movie.

The Revenant had a brilliant open through the first 30-45 minutes but sputtered out. In that it is a movie similar to Full Metal Jacket which was also made by a showy director

Spotlight is probably my favorite movie this year.

It was a cool experience but the film was otherwise underwhelming. I did not think Leo's performance was exceptional, great, but nothing ground-breaking, and I didn't feel like his revenge/redemption arc was well conveyed (actually I'm not entirely sure what was meant to be conveyed). The second half's pacing and structure were kind of a mess. Still the film was impressive technically, the lighting feat is an achievement, the camera work was captivating (but excessive), didn't catch it in a nice enough hall to comment too much on sound, but the mix we got seemed pretty immersive. It was a good film, but not a great one.

Also, Bill Weasley is so hot right now.

------------------------------------------------------

Scanning through GoldDerby's Oscar Odds, of films contending across the board, I've yet to see:

Jobs
Brooklyn
Danish Girl
Spotlight
Room
Straight Outta Compton
Creed

Haven't caught anything Indie/foreign this year, its been all mainstream. I struggle with ranking films; I feel dishonest just doing it on a whim, I like rating by covering as broad a criteria as I can and then I get caught up in figuring out how to assign weight to each category/sub-category/etc.. It's a mess.

Of the ones I've seen, I think its simplest to say I most enjoyed the following:

Mad Max
Hateful Eight
Sicario
The Big Short
Ex Machina

Revanant with 12 Oscar noms. Mad Max with 10.

Has anyone here seen The Walk or Everest? Trying to decide which one to watch tonight lol. Also downloaded Martian and will watch it over the weekend most likely.

I may be in the minority on this but I am pretty much done with theaters at this point. I feel like going to the movies is a big waste of money for the product you get. I went to watch the Big SHort a couple of weeks ago after my friend insisted. The movie was actually pretty good but there were about 15 minutes of commercials before the movie. The seats were not that comfortable either and I just kept on thinking how much more comfortable I would be at home watching this on TV.

I know I sound like some "Get off my lawn grandpa" right now lol but I am the point where I only watch 1-2 movies a year in theaters now and just wait for Blu-ray downloads online or Netflix. Only IMAX still seems worth it with better sound, quality, the immersive experience. This year the only movies I have seen on the big screen are Jurassic Park (IMAX), MI5 (IMAX), and the Big short

Ironically as recently as 1-2 years ago I was a huge let's go to the movies guy. Not anymore, I rather just download a blu-ray rip 2-3 months after the release.

I'm the same way. I just wait for pretty much everything. Take my kids to some IMAX stuff, the rest we see at the dollar and my wife and I just watch everything at home. I've had $75 worth of movie gift cards in my wallet for 2 years because that chain doesn't have an IMAX or a dollar theater by us so we never go.

IMAX or LieMAX? Because in my area, LieMAX is the biggest ripoff IMO. We've got about 10 LieMAX screens (when regular theaters outfit one of their halls with a full size screen, add a new "IMAX Digital" projector and upgrade the sound system, label it IMAX) and 3 true IMAX screens (3 Smithsonian museums, all of them had 15/70 Film projectors with massive 80'x70' screens in two and a 90'x80' in the other, though they've all sadly shifted to Dual Laser 4K projectors, which is still better than anything else but lacking next to the original 15/70 film).

The LieMAX screens charge ~$19.00 on average, the 3 "true" IMAX screens charge a fixed $15.00 and have been set at that price for feature films since their inception. Nolan films and the occasional big-budget blockbuster even have scenes shot with IMAX cameras, and the only way to experience those is on the true IMAX screens.

As for where to watch, I enjoy the comfort of home as well. Ticket prices here are crazy, but with like 50 theaters in relative vicinity, I've got a select few where I know I can have an enjoyable experience; not to mention there are some films that are designed to be ideally seen at the cinema (Hateful Eight 70mm Roadshow was my favorite film experience this year). It's not just about the grandeur, a lot of these films are made with the screen, sound system, and ambiance of a cinema hall in mind, particularly from a technical perspective.

On prices: I've embarked on a minor ticket price tracking project. When Avengers released in May 2012, I recorded its ticket prices in my area across different regions, timeframes (matinee/evening), and formats (2D/3D/IMAX/LieMAX/D-Box/XD/etc.). When the sequel released in May 2015, I tabbed the prices for the same theater/format/time to compare.

Image

8.7% observed inflation over the 3-year period. Notice that the Smithsonian IMAX price is unchanged.

Here's what was more ridiculous. I did the same for Age of Ultron (May 2015) and Star Wars (December 2015):

Image

2% observed increase in just a 7 month period. Prices as high as $20.87 for the Silver Spring LieMAX screen. Going forward, I'll be doing the same for all of the upcoming Star Wars films, and I've expanded my list a bit, adding morning showtimes as well as a few more regional divisions.

Impressive work SSB.

I am aware of the whole "LieMax" crap. I am pretty sure that theatre I go to has a true IMAX screen. The seats in that hall are definitely wider and better too compared to their others cinemas.

ANd I also agree that there are some movies made for the big screen but at this point I am willing to make that trade off for a surround sound on my big screen TV at home. If you think about it's insane how we are just supposed to accept 15 minutes of commercials before a movie we are paying to watch lol. I am only willing go for movies that I am really hyped up for and those are few and far between. DOn't get me wrong I still love watching movies but at this point I rather just watch them on Netflix or wait for a Blu-Rip in 2-3 months to surface online. And then the movies that I really like get added to my Blu-Ray collection.

Where are you getting average inflation from in the first table you posted? Is that in comparison to other theaters in the area?

Also, $20 for a movie ticket is madness. And that doesn't even consider popcorn or any other food should you choose to indulge yourself.

You mean going forward you will be watching the Star Wars films with the help of torrents or did I misinterpret what you are saying lol?

It's inflation over 3 years from the 2012 prices. Average price for Avengers (2012) for the shows I counted was $15.29, and average price for Age of Ultron for the same shows in the same theaters was $16.63, hence 8.7% increase over 3 years, an average of 2.9% per year (raw average, not actual yearly inflation accounting for compounding).

You mean going forward you will be watching the Star Wars films with the help of torrents or did I misinterpret what you are saying lol?

Haha, no I meant I'll be making the same chart for all of the Star Wars films to see how much prices increase film-by-film.

Ohhh, gotcha. I thought you had average inflation compared to either other cinemas or inflation in general but that was just inflation over 3 years averaged out .

Haha, yeah well if you are a Star Wars fan makes sense to go and spend that money in IMAX.

I thought Tony Parker was done after the last couple seasons and Patty would be the starting Pg eventually this season. Impressive bounce back season from him dude looks not far off his prime honestly lets see if he can keep it up in the playoffs.

If so this spurs team might be the most talented of all time, I think the GS is the only team that can win a couple of games vs them,

I love the experience of going to the movies. It is a easy reason to get a bunch of people together and have a night out. Also, the theater prevents me from checking the phone or doing work which is a big issue when I'm using netflix.

This is really crazy but at the 41 game mark both the Warriors and Spurs are on pace for at least 70 wins. Even if the Warriors lose their next two they'll still be on pace to tie the Bulls record.

Hey if you still love the experience then that's great. I don't say that to patronize you or anything, I too did enjoy going to the movies once upon a time as I said but now rather just wait 2-3 months to watch new movies. I am still okay with not having the itch to check my phone at home when I am watching movies. As for getting people together, IME it hasn't been any easier to get a bunch of people together for a movie than for any other night out. It's still the same with people. Some will come out, some won't. Eh lol.

Man, not sure the last movie I saw in theater, maybe Inception years ago? Was gonna see Spectre and still may because I'm a huge Bond fan (still have all the old VHS tapes til the end of Brosnan). But I don't have any friends around who want to see it still and may wait til its on demand so I can watch from home, kinda like it that way. Used to go ot a movie every week pretty much in high school

Just go in expecting parody/tribute to the older Bonds and camp. The film is more about nostalgia and mood-building than it script. I loved it but you can't go in expecting something serious or trying to be profound, like Skyfall. And its a technical marvel.

I remember those days too . I would go with my friends, you pay for one movie and then spend the whole day at the movies watching all kinds of crap without even checking rotten tomatoes or IMDB (oh, the horror!).
