It's pretty excellent. Much less of the bone-crunching action oriented series Daredevil was... more of a neo-noir story.

Don't know if it's any more or less dark than Daredevil. Jessica Jones definitely has some pretty intense subject matter (Kilgrave is an excellent super villain who does some seriously disturbing ****, and there's lots of discussion about PTSD/rape), but Daredevil was definitely more violent/graphic and held its own in the dark subject matter category as well. Jones definitely isn't SFW though. Tons of sex and lots of swearing. Definitely feels like a premium cable show meant exclusively for adults.

The Man in the High Castle just released on amazon, too. Saw the first two episodes a couple of weeks ago and it was brilliant. Gonna mow through that this weekend after I finish up JJ.

the man in high castle is that the show about what if Germany and Japan won WW2?

Yeah. It's very good, well worth your time.

It was done by David Simon and was about the youngest mayor in the country in Yonkers New York being forced and trying to all public housing on the affluent side of town.

Really interesting stuff.

LOVED IT. Interesting and a valuable story to be told, incredibly precise (there is footage from the Yonkers city council on youtube which is eerily similar to some scenes on the show, they basically recreated many real life moments) and some great casting (http://imgur.com/a/yqvR7 - for some examples).

I guess the only knock might be the fact that it took some time for a few characters to seem meaningful (you wonder - why do I exactly care for these people), yet it was worth it at the end.

What did you think of the main character, Nick Wasiscko?

Spoiler:
When you look back at it, he wasn't exactly the greatest guy. Kind of helped the housing project by accident. Screwed over his best friend in politics. Was insufferable for his wife at times. Yet I still found myself rooting for him at the end. Weird how TV is nowadays with protagonists having some very antagonistic qualities. And, obviously, Nick isn't even the worst of them. It's not like he's on Tony Soprano's level or anything.

But, yeah, the terrific job the actor (Oscar Isaac) did probably has something to do with it as well.

So I knew nothing of the story going in, and unlike myself I refrained from trying to do research as I got more and more hooked. So the ending was to say a shock to me.

I thought Nick was a good character, but the housing was going up no matter what. He had a part in it in a way, but he wasn't the reason or a main reason for what was going to eventually happen do to the court system. He always seemed to care about the thing that wasn't the most important thing in his life at the time. Almost trying to grasp at something to not have to face what was there. But in the end, just like you, I rooted for him. I hoped he would get what he strived to get. That could be a product of him being the main character and being more invested in him than others or because the other people in politics were just worse people than him.

It's actually a major point of debate and contention as to whether or not Daredevil has "powers" or not. Thing is, Marvel canon (comic universes AND MCU) is beginning to push for the idea that traumatic experiences can lead to superpowers. Jessica Jones in the MCU, for instance, didn't have superpowers until her "accident." The traumatic experience led to her gaining superhuman strength.

To watch (or read, if you're a comics guy) Daredevil right now and say he doesn't have superpowers seems kind of crazy to me, honestly. Yes, he's utilizing advantages we all associate with blindness—increased sensitivity to the other four senses—but he's doing it at a superhuman level. He's able to smell what kind of cologne a guy is wearing when the guy is three floors away. He can focus and hear targeted sounds in a crowded city from seemingly endless distances. His sensitive reactions during combat are essentially on par with (perhabps even exceeding) Spiderman's spidey sense.

I think with canon revising to make broader strokes as to who can gain superpowers, along with his undeniably superhuman abilities in the Netflix show, indicates that Daredevil does, in fact, have superpowers.

Does Daredevil have powers that other humans dont have yes but I hate to call them superpowers because they arent really traditional powers. you could argue he could do most of what he does now without the heighten senses...he is pretty much batman with out the batgod mode. he a side note its a damn shame daredevil isnt named batman because the name really fits his powers.

I've been meaning to get around to Show Me a Hero. I don't know anything about it, but Oscar Isaac has done a lot of cool stuff (Drive, Ex Machina, Inside Llewyn Davis, etc...) so just the pitch of him in an HBO miniseries alone has piqued my interest. The Man in the High Castle also looks really cool.

Spoiler:
I unfortunately had read interviews with David Simon and stuff from Alan Sepinwall. Knew what would happen. I wish I didn't.

I watched Daredevil and loved it until the last two or three episodes. It got a little too cliche and cheesy for my tastes at the end.

Thanks to the recommendations on the thread, I started Jessica Jones last night. I really liked the first episode. Its dark. Excited to see where they go with the show.

Anyone have Amazon Prime? If so, what shows are worth watching there? Vikings? Americans? What else?

I saw it...and I got some major questions about how formidable Kylo Ren is when he got owned by a 110 pound girl who has never used a light saber before.

there has been a write up by internet nerds about this, pointing out that it was pretty much the most ridiculous Star Wars due to some obvious plot holes.

But who cares, its star wars

I completely agree. I really enjoyed season one and didn't expect season two to be even better, but I was really blown away.

anyone have an opinion about The Hateful Eight? I was somewhat disappointed by it, one of Tarantino's most under-whelming projects.

I came out of the theater feeling the same way about the Kylo Ren final fight, but since have read some really good explanations that make it seem not so bad.

Spoiler:
His abilities are supposed to be extremely powerful but also really unstable due to the internal struggle between the light and dark side of the force. Having just killed his father also could have greatly exacerbated that issue. His main issue though was the fact that he was just shot with Chewbaccas blaster thing, which is basically the star wars equivalent of a .50 cal rifle. Its basically an insta-kill normally and he took a shot to the torso and not only survived, but then ran down Fin and Rey and managed to nearly defeat both of them.

I was pretty disappointed by the encounter when I first saw it, but more than anything I was just confused. Up until that point he had been made out to be an extreme bad ass. In the first scene he stops a blaster bolt mid air and then later displays the ability to peer into peoples minds and innermost thoughts, the latter of which is a power that I don't think any other Jedi we've seen possess. When the final fight happened I was like wtf???? But I wasn't really taking into consideration how injured he actually was at the time and the fact that basically anyone else would have been dead, or at the very least completely disabled.

I liked it better than Django but not as much Inglorious Bastards and certainly not as much as some of his older works. I still enjoyed it quite a bit, though.
