Great read! Thanks for posting that. That's what I have been preaching and will continue to preach. They likely will not have this opportunity again. Like I said, I can understand the desire to draft a defender but this is a throwing league and with Romo now being injury prone and with MAYBE 2 years left they need to look towards the future. I do not want to see this team repeat the mistake is made when they failed to have a plan in place for Aikman's retirement.

Don't get carried away, Mr B. I'm preparing my argument against Rick. Especially with the #4 pick.

More to come.

If there was one there, I might agree with you guys. I just don't see one. Not in the draft anyway. But I do see a young, non-starting QB that I would love to have and fit our need. A. J. McCarron from the Bengals. Dalton is young and not going anywhere. A.J. is ready to play now and made a nice audition while Dalton was out. JMO. I'm not the Cowboy GM, but I would take a hard look at it.

I mentioned on the other threat that I don't believe he's a free agent. He was drafted in 2014 so he has at least 2 more years left on his deal. The only way the Cowboys could get him is by trade and I'm not for that. They've traded away enough of their picks.

We actually could gain picks from this trade. Not only would we have the perfect replacement for Romo, but the perfect back up, killing 2 birds with one stone.

I'm telling you all, there is no future QB out there in this year's draft.

I disagree BJJ. The question is where you find him. First things first though. Here is a list of QB's currently available for the 2016 draft. Rankings from Drafttek http://www.drafttek.com/2016-NFL-Draft-Prospect-Rankings/Top-QBs.asp

I then did a little homework of my own and looked at the drafts from 2008 to last year.
A total of 93 QB's were taken in those drafts.
21 QB's were taken in the 1st round
9 were taken in the first three picks

Those QB's were;
    Year RD Pick Player
    2015 1 1 Jameis Winston
    2015 1 2 Marcus Mariota
    2014 1 3 Blake Bortles
    2012 1 1 Andrew Luck
    2012 1 2 Robert Griffin III
    2011 1 1 Cam Newton
    2010 1 1 Sam Bradford
    2009 1 1 Matthew Stafford
    2008 1 3 Matt Ryan

Here are the other 12... this list is not nearly as impressive;
    Year RD Pick Player
    2014 1 22 Johnny Manziel
    2014 1 32 Teddy Bridgewater
    2013 1 16 EJ Manuel
    2012 1 8 Ryan Tannehill
    2012 1 22 Brandon Weeden
    2011 1 8 Jake Locker
    2011 1 10 Blaine Gabbert
    2011 1 12 Christian Ponder
    2010 1 25 Tim Tebow
    2009 1 5 Mark Sanchez
    2009 1 17 Josh Freeman
    2008 1 18 Joe Flacco

For the sake of discussion - here are all the 2nd round QB's taken in those drafts. I would make the argument this list is a bit more impressive than the later 1st round list;
    Year RD Pick Player
    2014 2 36 Derek Carr
    2014 2 62 Jimmy Garoppolo
    2013 2 39 Geno Smith
    2012 2 57 Brock Osweiler
    2011 2 35 Andy Dalton
    2011 2 36 Colin Kaepernick
    2010 2 48 Jimmy Clausen
    2009 2 44 Pat White
    2008 2 56 Brian Brohm
    2008 2 57 Chad Henne

Based on those lists alone if they are going to take a QB in this draft they HAVE to take one with their first pick. Taking one in the second or 3rd is more than likely to be a wasted pick. You have a better chance of hitting on a QB the higher you take him.

I don't necessarily agree. I think that if Goff is there then I'm taking him. But if he's gone and so is Lynch (and - I'm not completely sold on Lynch yet FWIW), then the very last thing we should be doing is takin a QB simply to take a QB. One of Gosselin's other mantras I completely agree with at that point of the draft is that if you have a number of holes then you take the best player on your board. God forbid we take a guy like Connor Cook just because we need a QB.

Based on a couple of the most recent mock drafts the guy could take at #4 is Carson Wentz. I do know that the Cowboys do like him. He's 6'6" and extremely athletic. Physically he compares to Mariota but with a stronger arm and slightly bigger. Also played in a pro style offense. Really the only problem with him is that he went to a small school. If he went to a bigger school like Goff did he'd be the #1 player in everyone's board by a mile.

The next couple of months will tell if he's worthy of that pick. I know you guys will say no, and I'm on the fence but we're all going to get some really good scouting reports on him soon. He's going to be the starter for the North Team (the team the Cowboys are coaching) in the Senior Bowl. If he plays well and has a good combine his stick will rise big time. Right now he's being projected as a mid to late 1st round pick.

Cook seems to have fallen behind Wentz and Christian Hackenberg from Penn St.

I like Wentz. A lot. But - not at #4. That's way too high for the kid. I just think there is a lot of that pre-draft posturing with him right now that happens at this stage.

We have 2 months of this coming up. I'm willing to see how things shake out. I'm not in the "we don't need to take a QB" camp, though. Far from it. I just don't like reaching at any position - especially QB.

But - I really do like Wentz.

Food for thought from one of the guys I know does really good work on preparing for the draft. I still don't endorse Wentz at #4 but there are good discussion points here.

I posted this in the Jerry... Jerry... Jerry... thread but it also fits here so I'll post it here too.

Will McClay is the sole reason I would not be upset if they decided to go with Carson Wentz at #4. After studying him and working with him at the Senior Bowl and the Combine, if they decided that is their guy I would not be upset if they picked him even though most people think he's more of a middle 1st rounder.

Jerry has said himself that McClay is the main reason this team drafted Travis Fredrick. Everyone else in the NFL had Fredrick going in the 2nd or 3rd round. McClay did his homework and knew better. Fredrick isn't even 5 years into his career and is already a 2 time All Pro. If McClay believes Wentz will be a Pro Bowl QB (or even All Pro) then I trust him.

Come on, lol. Its not the end of the world if we don't take a QB in the draft this year. Geesh. Its starting to sound that we are so desperate for a qb that Cowboy nation will be in panic mode. One of my bold prediction's for next year is Romo will play all 16 games next year anyways.

Romo playing every game next year would be the best thing. It would mean that Wentz wouldn't have to play. He could sit and learn. Even if Romo does get injured again I fully expect the Cowboys to have a veteran QB backing Romo up. Wentz needs to be the 3rd QB. I would love to see the Cowboys sign a guy like Nick Foles in addition to drafting Wentz.

There are a few other unrestricted free agent QB's worth taking a look at besides Foles.

Return to Dallas Cowboys
