The two year rule

Post#1 » by Celtsfan1980 » Sun Jan 17, 2016 11:11 pm

Coaches that have struggled in their first two seasons:Noll, Landry, and Ewbank. Quarterbacks that have struggled in their first two seasons:Aikman, Blanda, Bradshaw, Young, Moon, Starr, Tarkenton, and Tittle. Many instances of teams quitting on a quarterback or coach after two seasons, but history shows they may be making a mistake. Should they?

Hell no. Look at the success of teams that have hired and fired a coach or started and dumped a QB more than once in the last decade or so. Are they successful? Nope. Have the Browns found anyone better than if they had just stuck with Butch Davis all this time? Nope. Does anyone look at Detroit as being a peach of a job? Nope. Would the Jets be any worse off if they just stuck with Mark Sanchez (provided he had ever been properly developed in any way, shape or form)? Nope.

If you are a Browns fan, would you want Manziel back after his first year? Just saying.

Well, in a perfect world, you have the sense not to draft him in the first round, but maybe more in line with this thread, you could think of it this way. Just keep and start Colt McCoy. Would they have been in any worse shape? Would the combination of Butch Davis and Colt McCoy be any WORSE than the 28 wins the Browns have since they drafted him in 2010? Even if they wanted to bring in other crap like Weeden and Manziel, at least make them beat out McCoy (which neither of them are good enough to do) instead of just dumping the guy and starting over. Even if you aren't that good, a little consistency keeps your franchise from looking like a bunch of assclowns. Not looking like assclowns is very important for attracting and keeping free agents and decent assistant coaches.
I hope that made sense without making it sound like I actually think McCoy should be a long term solution for anyone at QB.

Some guys clearly can't cut it after two years. Everyone knew Jim Zorn was in over his head after two years of coaching. Everyone knew Blaine Gabbert was a bust after two years(did he even get two?).

There needs to be progress shown, otherwise you're just wasting time.
Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

Honestly, the right side to choose in this discussion largely depends on the next guy a team hires or drafts. If you are firing your coach to replace him with Jim Zorn, don't bother. Just keep the old coach. You're moving on from JP Losman so you can go with Trent Edwards? Why are you wasting your time? Stick with Losman if you are just going to get someone who everyone in the world knows sucks.
