AtheJ415 wrote:Reality is it's both Hornacek and the roster's fault. I can find a bunch of articles saying the Suns are playing below their talent, just as there are a ton of articles that will say Jeff is a good coach. Like Dantley above said, the roster doesn't have cohesion, although I disagree with you here that it doesn't have talent or is just bad. Our individual guys have talent They have shown that over the course of a long time. The problem is they don't play together as a team and the team IQ is awful. There are some captains of the low IQ team but even the supposed high IQ guys don't improve in that area. We're the only team that has no real improvement across the board at our weaknesses, and the main way to assess a coach may not be playoffs, it may not be wins and losses, because those are all impacted by roster talent, but it damn sure can be improvement. My problem with Jeff is there has been no improvement. Not really. 3 point shooting is better, but that is literally it, and a lot of that is simply bringing in Leuer and Tele.

I do think Jeff has his faults. For anyone thinking I don't, that isn't the case, and I've mentioned since December I am neutral on him now. I think most young first time coaches are going to work through issues, figure out what works, what gets players to tick, how to manage different people etc.

I've managed a lot of people and sometimes you just have to learn how each individual best respond to management, e.g., the Warren benching.

I can't really say I disagree with the fact that our team hasn't improved, but in year one, we lost Bledsoe, in year two, we completely flipped over the team and then our Dragic/IT replacement was gone for the season. In year 3 we lose Bledsoe again.

I think we were teetering on turning the corner and the new team (with guys like Leuer starting for the first time in their career) coming together during that six game road trip, against mostly tough teams (Memphis, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto) and played pretty much every game close, could have easily gone 4-2 on that trip (but still beat Chicago and Toronto on the road which are very good wins) if Knight didn't have two huge costly miscues at the end of the Detroit game (that one was in the bag if not the turnover to Marcus...we were winning at the time) and Memphis....this was either a win or OT, until the TO and buzzer beater alley-oop.

We get home with that Chicago win, beat a feisty Orlando team, then go 2-3 in our next five including a blowout loss to GS, but then, coming after a win against the Pelicans, we blow a game we should have won to Milwaukee. I think that game crushed Hornacek and he alluded to the mistake on one of the final plays that frustrated him in his press conference.

I think with the combination of lame duck status, not getting through to Knight (I'm guessing Kidd felt the same way), the Markieff situation hanging over his head, injuries to Len and Chandler, and all this basically took the life out of him. I think he probably expected to be fired then. I expected it.

But the team as a whole looked a bit deflated and then Bledsoe went down, so, by default, we are not going to be very good.

But to get back to a question another poster mentioned, about what Hornacek does well (I'd rather answer here because I prefer not to engage with trolls)..

I think many players flourish under Hornacek....many of played the best ball of their careers under him (Dragic, Frye, Plumlee, Green, Bledsoe) and I think he has done a good job with the development of Warren and Booker. Now people can argue all day that those guys should have played from day one and they would have developed faster/better, but that isn't always necessarily the case, and likely not usually the case.

People also mention he has an iso system, but that really isn't the case....he has been given low iq and iso players...guys that have played most of their basketball lives as iso guys....like Markieff and Knight. Thomas is a score first pg, who gets assists if he can't find his own shot he will give it to someone else with 2 seconds on the shot clock. People mention that we should have more assists because of playing more point guards, but when these guys are each more concerned with getting their own, it will not lead to assists.

Could another coach get through to the squad he was given this year, with the Markieff situation, starting Leuer for the first time, Len/Chandler injuries, etc? I don't know. I really don't think many or maybe any would have done as well as he did in year one with that squad or possibly even the first half of year two, when they were 28-20 even though Dragic was disgruntled.

But I think there are valid reasons the team declined in the second half of each year, due to the two Bledsoe injuries and the Dragic, IT, Ennis trades to bring back Knight who goes down for the season. How could you EXPECT improvement?

i want to go big picture for a second.

this Cleveland moment is really interesting. it feels the Yankees back in the day, with Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon. i'm from New Jersey, was raised a quasi-Yankees fan. they taught us that you can't buy rings. they have to come from something that works well.

Cleveland feels bought. they took Smith, Shumpert and Love from worse teams, but they can't beat Golden State. why? because Golden State works for all the right reasons, while Cleveland is just bought. sure, all that talent will get you to 30-11, but that's why i think they'll never win the championship. you can't buy grit, character, or chemistry.

in the shadow of that, i feel exactly like the Suns are the A's of 2002, and McD is Billy Beane. instead of a lack of salary cap, McD is working with a lack of opportunities. "what can i do to force my way into the playoff mix? who can be that guy for more than 50 games?" Bled is the closest thing we have, but if he can't play two whole seasons, we're not getting very far.

i think we have to start getting used to the idea that Ben Simmons, a superstar, could come to us. it feels crazy, to think that level of talent could come our way, but we're tanking at exactly the right time. it can happen.

that's my favorite prospect. i hate that we're on the outside looking in, but there are opportunities. teams like Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Memphis.....they're frozen on the 2nd tier. with Simmons, we won't be. it opens up opportunities.

i'm excited. i'm totally happy to throw this season out. long term, with guys like Booker and Warren, our Moneyball moment may be coming.

I agree. And even if we don't get Simmons (say it's Bender, Ingram, or Dunn), we have guys who have promising futures. We're in a much better position than we were 3 years ago, and while I'm concerned about some of the guys we have (Chandler, Knight, Tucker (I don't know why or how this dude is still here)), we're in a good position to move them. Maybe not this year, but in the offseason or next. There's no reason to panic or lose optimism on the future of this team, because they are our bright spots, and our problem children aside from Knight are not the young players. That makes it harder to win now, but is the better scenario for a rebuild.

Booker, Warren, Len all can become something really good. Bogdan is playing well overseas and we'll see what he has next year. Most Euro's require a lot of adjustment to the NBA game, but I think he'll be at least a really good role player long-term. We just need to remain patient, grab a good player in this next draft, and keep plugging away. The last thing I want is to panic, trade our guys for a bunch of late 20 to early 30 year olds, and end up a frozen 2nd tier team staring down another rebuild in 5 years. And despite what many think on here, that's exactly where we'd be if we had kept Goran, Gortat, or many of the other supposed mistakes I keep reading that we made along the way.

That has already been posted somewhere else I think....it's interesting to think about that Boston team and to compare it to the Suns, and even Rivers to Hornacek. I remember Bill Simmons HATED Doc the first 3-4 years....Pierce got injured, the team didn't do well....then when they make blockbuster trades and win a title, Bill Simmons suddenly says Doc is one of the best coaches in the league.

What's also funny is that Ainge had wanted to bring in Hornacek for an interview back in 2004 before he ended up hiring Doc. Since Ainge and likely the Boston owner don't have that itchy trigger finger churning GMs and coaches, Hornacek would have likely had a long time there...and perhaps a championship.

Philly also wanted to interview him when they ended up hiring Brett Brown. As bad as Philly is, I think that job would have been good for him too, because the owner didn't expect playoffs immediately, and Brett Brown is given a longer leash.

Really?!?!? LMAO. Okay, SF88.

Because in my post that you responded with... "I've read a lot of stupid **** in my life but this is just WOW." I stated
but still we're losing games playing our young guns and hopefully land a top pick in the process. What more can you guys ask for?

That was a false statement. PJ Tucker, despite being much older and clearly a worse basketball player than Warren, still plays more than TJ every game.

Archie still racks up DNP CD's

Len might have the most inconsistent minutes of any player in the NBA.

So I'd say that there is a LOT for us to ask for.

And if I was SF88 then why am I posting on this account?

Well I was once told that SF88 was an old poster from the espn forums known as Suns2K or Suns2K5 or something who kept getting banned, and kept coming back with new accounts, and then this same guy after having, who knows how many accounts, blasted management for letting Amare go, became partially a Knicks fan yet still trolled the Suns espn forum. I've had a Miami moderator tell me that they think SF88 is a Miami fan because he was posting a lot there because he is a Dragic fan who blasts Suns management for getting rid of him.. So I guess what I was told kind of adds up.

Which all leads me to say, if you were to be SF88 (previously known here as Teaser Pleaser), and I'm not saying you are, that person definitely knows how to set up new accounts.

And it looks like you got yourself suspended already by a moderator from another forum so you must be all over the place. Good quick work.

What were you thinking for a trade?

Thanks for the response. I haven't put much thought into a trade for Morris as I've just recently heard this rumor. Our beat writer said that a lot of teams are asking for an asset to take on Morris and his contract and that the Warriors advantage may be that they are not asking for an asset from the Suns to take him. He made it sound like the Warriors would basically be offering a salary dump with maybe a younger player the Suns like. I'm not sure how legit his info is but he's got pretty decent connections with the Warriors and is not the type to just throw out crap against the wall lol.

Sorry, I added the trade after your response. I was thinking Looney and Livingston, and we'd add a second rounder for your trouble.

Livingston's size, defensive versatility, and playmaking ability are way too important to the Warriors to be trading for a one trick pony like Kieff. Those are the aspects of the Ws that make them who they are. There's no reason to sacrifice that for some scoring they don't need. Could Norris help them? Sure. But if they lose anybody in their regular rotation save maybe Barbosa, theyd be taking a step back

Definitely not wrong about what you said above. I'm still pissed that Tucker gets more minutes than Warren. Len has been playing inconsistent minutes all season. Archie rotting on the bench for some reason on a tanking team (lol).

I would say that is a valid argument and why I said Hornacek is garbage. Though we are tanking and he is perfect for that high pick. What else is he good for? Nothing :D

Don't be like that Booker for 3. I think Horny is a great coach. Perhaps the best up and coming coach in the whole league.

Reminds me of a younger Popovich. It will be great to have him as our coach for the next 10 years +

Fixed :D

Well, if people watched, trade value should have gone up considerably for some of our players tonight, and that makes us fans want to keep them, but including them in a deal for a big asset is more possible now.

Who? That train has passed as far as I am concerned. Tank and see where we are in the lottery before we do anything. Boston waited until after they didn't get Oden or Durant

I was just saying that guys like Chandler and Goodwin who were probably untradeable prior to tonight, if other teams watched, their stocks rose. Do you disagree with that?

They really need Kief. He's a much better matchup against teams like GS. I just wish they had more to offer us. If we can get a 3 way trade going that would be ideal imo. I like Love's game but don't see a 27 year old as the ideal move for our future.

Odds of getting Simmons or Ingram are still a long shot from 4th or 5th place (2.5 games clear of 3rd and 6th) @ about 20%.

I guess that is what the FO are looking at, thinking they can get better odds of a transforming the team with their method.

New Orleans is clearly going for the playoffs. I think we could make a trade or 2 with them. They need an upgrade at the 3 spot, and instead of Anderson, who we don't need and isn't the player many think of on here, let's take Gordon's expiring, and ask for NO's first rounder this year. NO would rather have Anderson than Gordon anyways for the stretch run.

If Gordon's salary is on the table, we can throw anybody in here.

Tucker and one of Markieff or Chandler, for instance.

Tucker, Chandler for Gordon and Perkins and the 1st, or Gordon and Babbit and the 1st. Pelicans get constant rim protection with Asik and Chandler at the 5 at all times. Davis gets to play the 4, his preferred spot, at all times, and they add Tucker at SF over Alonzo Gee.

Then we can still trade Kieff to the Cavs and Tele to the highest bidder.

Honestly, I'm just as intrigued by Bender at this point. Ceiling - a 7'0" Shawn Marion / Andrei Kirilenko type. Sign me up!

The problem with Bender is that in 2014 he signed a 7-year contract in Europe with an NBA opt-out clause after the 4th season. Whoever drafts him will have to wait 2 years for him to come over. I still like him as a prospect tho.
