Arturas Karnisovas in the running for Nets GM job
I think if we lose him it will hurt the current rebuild I think he is pretty involved in the international scouting, but it is hard for me to hold it against the guy moving up in job titles and probably pay.

Absolutely NOT, he has to stay with the Nugget !! Didn't he just sign a new contract ?? I agree on moving up but is the BKN job really attractive to him ? I do see the Int'l connection with Prokerov but that is just the dreggs of all NBA destinations right now.

I know it's malicious and greedy but I really hope he doesn't get the job

What is a gm going to do on a team with no picks and such few assets?

Pretty sure 1 GM is better than no GM.

Well, the Nets had Billy King there for quite a few years, so during that time they found a way to make no GM work.....

Okay, let me rephrase that

1 GM > 0 GM > Billy King as GM

I know why the nets want him.
My question is why would Arturas want to be their GM?

It's not like there's tons of teams who are looking for a new GM (which is a promotion for him). There are only 30 GM slots in this league and most of those are filled. It's a big career opportunity and actually not that bad of a place to start as a GM. They barely have any assets and so the expectations shouldn't be high either.

Position is a poisoned chalice, sort of like the Philly HC position that Brett Brown got. Would be smart for him to just use the Nets to get his name out there and then wait for a more fair opportunity.

I understand your argument, but I do think that NBA execs understand what type of situation Brett Brown was put in, and they might evaluate him accordingly and not hold him too accountable for that team's record. From a casual fan's perspective, he might seem like a bad coach though, even though that's completely unfair.

Re: Arturas Karnisovas in the running for Nets GM job
By the same token, if the rebuild of the Nets is derailed by players, lack of motivation, any insurgency or lack of interest in a rebuilding team, who do you think that would reflect on for future jobs ?? Seems a bit of a risk there. That being said, the owner is a Russian with deep pockets (although he has already been rumored to want to sell the team) and Karnisovas has a good rep with foreign connections so that might not be a bad combination either to Euro-players who don't have strong NBA affiliations yet.

Re: Arturas Karnisovas in the running for Nets GM job
While Bryan Colangelo appears to be the front-runner, Arturas, because he speaks Russian like Prokorov, seems to be at the top of the list as well. Found this interesting as well, if Karnisovas leaves, an old familiar face could jump in the mix. I'd be very excited if this happens, what are your thoughts ?

Hiring Chauncey would be the right thing to do. Look at the Broncos and Avs, it's worked out for them hiring hometown heroes, Nuggets need to do the same if Arturas leaves.

While we're comparing apples and oranges, take a look at Walt Weiss and the Rockies and how well that's worked out. I'm not a huge fan of giving inexperienced guys big roles in management/coaching just because they were great players (see Kidd and Fisher as HCs), but I think Chauncey could actually help out a lot in free agency. I'd rather keep Karnisovas, but wouldn't be completely against giving Chauncey some kind of assistant GM role if he does leave.

I would like to see Chauncey get a role in the front office, but I am not a fan of him stepping into assistant GM right off the bat.

I think this statement from The Rebel is very important. We've picked up some pretty good international players and look at where we got them in draft picks. Mostly we picked up players that other teams were casually passing by without looking.
As for why he would want a team with not much talent and no draft picks; it's a big time gamble but if he can pull off any kind of improvement, he'll be given high accolades. He's taking on a challenge for sure.
As for his replacement? Well, he's not THE GM, so inexperienced isn't the worst thing but GM is very different than PLAYER and it doesn't usually translate well. Billups might be one that it does, but I would hope the owner would consider adding someone with more international identity in another position - or at least be very aware and emphasize any loss there. But for all we know, the Nuggets already have that covered, so ...

Re: Arturas Karnisovas in the running for Nets GM job
I think we would be fine with Connelly in terms of international scouting. I like Billups because everyone in the NBA respects him and that goes a long way in Free Agency. Billups is a smart guy with a long history of working hard, he'll grow into the role quickly.
As for comparing the Rockies and Walt Weiss to this situation. I think we all know that Weiss isn't necessarily the problem here, we have the worse owners in the MLB.

Sigh of relief that Sean Marks got offered the job instead.
