Jennings... Should He Stay or Should He Go?

Post#1 » by mercury » Mon Jan 25, 2016 1:27 am

The days are dwindling until the trade deadline. SVG will be faced with a difficult decision similar to Monroe's.
Does he wait it out and hope that Jennings makes an impact in the playoffs and signs a long term deal... OR does he try to get something in return short or long term.
The numbers tossed around have been in the range of 12-15 mil average for the contract or first year incremental for the teams' bird rights.
Questions that should be answered include:
Has he been the difference in winning games?
What could his salary be used considering for the most recent CBA agreement?
Are we in a position to warrant trading for an aging vet to put the team over the top?
How committed is Jennings to a backup role with the team?
What % of the salary would Stan be willing to allocate to BJ?... with future considerations

I would assume that he could receive an offer to be a starter for similar to what the Pistons are willing to provide.

IMO Stan should be actively pursuing deals before 2/18... some folks may prefer waiting this out to either sign him as a quality backup or use his cap for re-signing current players... or finding a fit at the backup PG, PF, SG position.

This should be an interesting discussion.... GO

Still too early to tell. Ask me again in 2 weeks, but I still lean towards keeping him. IF he's playing well then we want to keep him for a post-season run and then either re-sign him or get the cap space. IF he's playing poorly then we won't get much of a return and we want to preserve future cap space.

You look, you listen, but ultimately I think you hang onto him.

not going to lie, seeing the impact jennings makes on the team and the lack of defensive effort RJ puts forth, i am tempted to want to resign jennings and trade RJ. This is of course due to losing 2 games in a row and i am ready to burn a mofo down

Right now I'm in the trade camp. We are 6-7 with him. The main argument for not trading him is if he gives us a better chance to make the playoffs. He's made the bench better, but overall it's not translating to more wins, so might as well get something for him and go with Blake.

I think his presence may have messed up chemistry with the starters too. Reggie and Dre haven't been the same players lately. They were the unquestioned leaders of the team for 60+ games, and then we added the old leader of the team into the mix, and I think it's got them off their game mentally or something. It's great that our bench is improved, but they only play 15 mpg. The starters success is more important.

I didn't like his leadership comment either. A guy who has only been with a team for a dozen games shouldn't be criticizing other players leadership skills. Dre and Reggie have led us into position to make the playoffs, which is something Jennings never did, so I don't think he should be talking.

It wouldn't be the most irrational line of thinking. RJ definitely has been laying eggs as of late while Jennings runs the bench pretty effectively that mitigates the damage done if RJ and Dre have off nights.

RJ really needs to get his head out of his you know what and just play. He's overthinking and letting his emotions get the best of him.

Trading your best perimeter player because his gimpy backup (on an exp contract) played good for a few games vs bench players is pretty irrational, to be honest.

I get people are upset over recent games, but some perspective is needed here. Dre & Reggie are still our best chance at a championship one day. Jennings has never been as good as Reggie has this year, Dre was never this good playing with Jennings, and the team never won this many games with him. So that's not even a topic to me. It's either use Jennings for the rest of the year and maybe resign him to be Reggie's backup, or get something now in a trade.

Jennings has been just as bad on defense as Reggie and plays like Steve Blake on offense 90% of the time. I'm not impressed. No way I consider starting him and trading Reggie.

Jennings still looks like a guy coming off of a serious Achilles injury. It's too early to make a solid case either way. I don't think we will really know how close he can get back to normal before the trade deadline so my guess is Detroit will stick with him and see how it plays out.

It's doubtful Brandon has any real trade value right now anyways. Pretty much all of the good/contending/playoff teams are set at point guard. The bad teams who need one probably don't want to make a move like this in-season and simultaneously get better and hurt their lottery chances. Especially not for a guy on an expiring contract.

Not a team without a draft pick like the Nets

Bargnani, Bogdanovich, Jack for Jennings, Meeks

We get our back up PG, SG and another bench big in Bargnani and only lose 4M of cap space this offseason

Nets get a look at Jennings before he hits free agency with the money and location as selling points

Reggie / Jack - Blake
KCP / Bogdanovich
Mook / Stanley
Ilyasova / Tolliver - Bargnani
Drummond / Baynes - Anthony

Traded. I think there is some friction between Jennings and Reggie, a inter team rivalry of sorts. This was anointed Reggie's team, but Jennings is a charismatic little dude who has fun when playing and that is infectious. No way Jennings re-signs here, he'll look for his own team, and should he not find one, I think he'd look for a situation where the starting guard in front of him has less hold on the position-either a youngster or a older vet sorta deal. Jennings and Reggie are the same age here.

He should stay. In a small sample size, Jennings has been pretty effective in running the offense. This has been big for us when the starters come in laying eggs. I'm certain Reggie will shake this funk he's in and get back to playing like he earned his contract. This little bit of adversity will help with the maturation of the team. Guys aren't butting heads over playing time or undermining the coach or any other locker room cancer sort of things.

They are trying to find their identity which on some levels is pretty funny when you think about it. Since the offseason they've been wearing Bad Boys gear and that historic team was known for its defense. The bottom line is from the "leader" to the guys who are just practice players, there needs to be effort on both ends for entire games every time we play.

Stay. Pistons will need his depth to beat the Cavs in the first round this year.

FYI. Jarret Jack had a season ending injury. He can't be traded.

It all depends in what his value is and whether or not it's even worth trading him.

Like BadMofo said Jack is out for the year so he isn't much of a factor here. I think I'd rather have the $4 million in cap space and the 2-3 roster spots than any of those guys though. That's pretty awful.

I didnt know Jack was injured, Bogdanovich is making less than Meeks and is starting so would be useful off the bench

Bargnani is not good but at 1M a year he is a bargain for an extra bench big

If Jack was not hurt it would be a pretty good trade

Unless someone offers good picks or a legit building block, what's the point? He either improves to the point where we want to try to keep him or we get cap space. Both of those are better than taking on fringe rotation players.

I agree, I think the reward is likely pretty low if we trade him. If we keep Jennings, best case he helps us make a playoff run and we may or may not resign him in the offseason. Worst case, he doesn't recover fully and we just let him walk at the end of the season and then still have some cap space.

exactly. Jennings has been a MAJOR disappointment. Provides the offense nothing and i would not be opposed to trading him for a couple impact players off the bench.

Two points:

1. Is Jennings a negative? Is there any issues inside the clubhouse that we are not hearing about? If this is true, obviously just trade him for scraps. We are building a "team" and that has to be top priority.

2. What can we get for him? He is an asset, and our bench is in theory, better with him. So why trade him? Only if we can get a better asset in return. I don't think we're getting any first rounders for him. Maybe a better player with a multi-year contract if that team wants some cap space. So Maybe a prospect? I don't know - doesn't seem like much of an incentive.

There is one more likely scenario - we do a big trade to get a building block, and we need to throw in Jenning's salary to make it work. In this case, sure, trade him.
