Re: TJ McConnell
In January, as a back up, McConnell has had the fourth highest assist percentage in the NBA (50.4), 4th highest steal percentage (5.1), and a 22.3 PER which ranks 38th.

He's definitely been a surprise this year. Could be a glue guy and backup PG for a long time.

He's been fantastic in his back-up role, upper tier back-up NBA point guard, no question.

Delly's pretty lights out from 3, wouldn't be much use as a player if he wasn't.

TJ's a hard worker, imagine if he comes back next year as a knock down 3pt shooter as well? would be a very nice back up pg.

Re: TJ McConnell
View Delly as more of a 3 and D PG, whereas TJ McConnell is a pure PG.

The undrafted point guard has already recorded seven assists in 15 minutes or less three times, while no one else has been as efficient more than once.
Is he referring in the entire NBA?

Entire NBA. It's only happened 5 times where a play has 7+ assists in 15 or less minutes of play, and TJ has 3 of them.

It is (obviously) a testament to the Sixers overabundance of pg depth and talent, that they can minute constrain someone doing that.

There are reasons for it:
1) Ish has been great. He's singlehandedly changed the whole team outlook and dynamic. So it is kind of hard to argue that TJ should be taking major minutes away from Ish.
2) Overexposure. Just because TJ can put up some nice performances in short stretches against mostly backups doesn't mean he should be getting starter minutes or that we can extrapolate those numbers over 30 minutes.
3) TJ doesn't have the maturity or experience to finish the game off. We saw that the first 18 games of the year. Nobody could create a good shot in the last few minutes including TJ. That's why while the Sixers were close in a lot of games, they could never get the win.
I really love TJ and what he's doing for the team in the backup role, but let's not kid ourselves by looking at some stats per 15 minutes and think TJ is ready for a much bigger role at this point. For now I'm comfortable with TJ learning from Ish, and from my observation TJ has learned a lot from Ish. It is better to put TJ in a role that he can succeed, which right now is backup PG. Keep his confidence up and build gradually from there. He was by default thrust into the lead PG role earlier in the season and proved that he was not ready.

Re: TJ McConnell
Prior to Summer League, I heard TJ described as a good point guard if you needed someone to come in to organize the team and run an offense. I don't think anyone expected that he was ready to come in and play at the NBA level. People thought he was too short and not a good enough athlete despite is high basketball IQ.
Great kid! Hopefully, he will be a character leader on the team for many years to come.

TJ is fun to root for and I like him, but I think ideally he is a third string point guard.

I would actually be curious to see a comparison of NBA back-up point guards. My feeling is that he'd be at or near the top in a lot of categories.

When is the last time you took a scan around the league at the average 2nd string PG?

The following guys would have a good argument for being better: Dennis Schroeder, Jeremy Lin, Marcus Smart, Matthew Dellavedova, Brandon Jennings, Darren Collison, Cory Joseph, Patty Mills, Lou Williams, Ty Lawson, Joseph Young, Shaun Livingston, etc.

Re: TJ McConnell
You can make the case that he's a middle of the pack backup PG, but he still fits the backup job description as well as the next guy. Excellent passer, takes care of the ball, hard nosed defender, adequate handle, good shot selection, true leader, never takes a possession off.
The guys Dorkestra listed may be better individual players, but in many cases you can argue that they don't fuel their 2nd units and dictate the pace the way TJ does. He's found his niche in this role.

Re: TJ McConnell
Like I said I like the guy and he's definitely easy to root for. I just think that compared to backup point guards on some of the top teams, he is definitely a bit outmatched. it can be overcome, but it's certainly not a strength on the court, despite his intangible contributions. That's why I said "ideally" he is your third string point guard.
