Anthony Brown... You buying?

Post#1 » by TKainZero » Wed Jan 27, 2016 7:24 am

He has gotten some run as of late.
Looks like he has 3&D potential

He doesn't have good handles yet, not a jump out of the building athlete

But seems to be at least a DECENT one on one defender

Why does it seem like the lakers have to go to one extreme or the other. Nick young all offense, or Brown all defense.
USA Celtics in full effect. Amazing chemistry building experience right there for the main core of the team

Proceeds to finish 7th and shames the entire nation!

He's making some good cuts off the ball, starting to make some shots and has some driving ability on hard close outs. Defensively he's more of a guard defender and I don't think he can keep up with the SFs in this league yet.

That would require some semblance of a functional offense and not just running isos with a few pick and rolls thrown in.

He's good on the cheap rookie contract. Just play defense and work on the 3-point range and he'll have a solid career in this league.

he already getting better and better in each games, his driving game surprisingly good. His jumpshoot form looks really pretty. He has great future for the Lakers. Probably future starter for the Lakers (2 or 3)

I like what I've seen. Good lateral quickness on D, good form on his shot even though it hasn't been falling consistently, and some flashes of being able to attack closeouts.

According to Trudell he's got the 2nd best defensive field goal percentages of all rookies. The first being a player that doesn't play very much. He holds his opponent to something like 3% less than their normal percentages.

I think as he gains more confidence, gets legit NBA 3-point range, he will develop into a nice complementary player and glue-guy. I like the pick.

Also he's shooting 36.1% from 3 in January. Before this month he'd only hit 1 shot from behind the arc, so he's at least starting to catch on.

At the contract he's at, yeah, I'll buy. For anything more, there's better players out there.

He's changed my stance on him a tad.

Again, credit where it's due but Mitch and the guys with another great draft selection here. Love his makeup, shooting stroke, and basketball smarts. Nice rotation player.

This.

His man defense is surprisingly good for a rook. He's getting used to the NBA pace, moves well off the ball, his shot is improving. He just needs fair amount of burn and he'll be a good rotation player like you said.

I honestly didn't know much about him other than him being a good 3 point shooter. The first few times that I saw him play, I was disappointed with him offensively. What stood out to me was even though his offense wasn't going for him, he didn't just give up and he busted his ass on defense. A player with an attitude like that is worth keeping around. To me he is in a very situation that Nance is. Neither Brown or Nance are going to be the focal hard on offense but they show other ways of contributing and players like that are perfect alongside our other young guys.

Sure we might have one of the league's worst records, but the core of this team has me excited for the future of the Lakers.

Here's a good write-up on Brown from last week.

http://www.forumblueandgold.com/2016/01/20/the-lakers-need-more-players-like-anthony-brown/

Here are some additional numbers:

In the 318 minutes Brown has been on the floor, the Lakers have a Defensive Efficiency of 95.9; when he has not been in the game, the Lakers’ DEff is 109.9.
Players Brown defends take 58.6% of their shots from 16 feet or farther. On those shots, players shoot 28%. The league average on these shots is 38.6%.
When players take 3 pointers against Brown, they only make 25.5% of them. The league average on these shots is 36.4%.

Here is Anthony Brown’s defensive shot chart for the season:

raw on offense, doesn't get embarrassed on defense, certainly worth keeping around to see what he can become

Well, for me it's all about expectations. People use the term 3&D too loosely nowadays, in the sense that someone like Matt barnes can be a 3 &D player, while someone like Batum or Ariza is also a 3 &D player, meaning there are levels to it. His lack of athletisicm, creation ability, or any other notable skill other than shooting makes it hard for me to see him as a Batum Ariza 3&D player, aka a starting quality player. However, his shooting, effort, understanding of his role, and defensive potential do make me think that he can be a "lower tier" three and D player, which is basically a very good backup SF. Can he have a better defensive version of James Jones type of career? absolutely. Can he be a solid starter like Ariza? not in my opinion. All that being said, there is definitely a place for him in this league, and hopefully on the future Laker rosters.
