Why do I have the fear that the Lakers dont have many fans in LA compared elsewhere?

Post#1 » by DS17 » Thu Jan 28, 2016 5:27 am

I dont live in california but i have changed my twitter trends to LA's, and let me tell you, the people of LA care alot more about tv shows, celebrity gossip, ext. than their team.

If one is to look at the crowd in home games, most the fans look like tourists (maybe because the ticket prices are so expensive)

Hell, the clippers are getting pretty popular as i have heard.

All this makes me think that most of the support the Lakers have is OUTSIDE of LA, what do you guys think?

I had to rush this post bc i have to take my dog out lol, so excuse any unfinished sentences or spelling mistakes

Here's Jerry West's opinion

Rome asked West whether Warriors fans were the same, different, or "frankly better" than the notoriously huge Lakers fan base, and West did not hesitate in the slightest to confirm that the Roaracle blows Staples away.

"Oh, much better than LA fans, OK? They don't ever leave the game," West said. "Once we moved into Staples Center, our fan base changed, I thought. It's a completely different kind of fan than Los Angeles. Los Angeles has a lot of corporate fans there, whole different people sat in different seats. You can go up to Oracle right now and you'll see the same fans in the same seats every night. The fans in Los Angeles are great, but I've never seen fans like this here."

To be going off Twitter trends, I don't think you realize how big and diverse LA is.

I can see how an outsider can see it that way. With that said i would agree with Jerry West in that the fanbase here is simply different. We have hundreds of things daily to spend out money on and get excited about. Most people in LA are transplants and transplants dont make the most loyal fans.

Lastly $$$$ Its very expensive to goto a Laker game especially when you have the corporate fans driving up the cost of tickets.

This. Hard to explain to somebody that doesn't live here but LA area is huge and as you said diverse and there's a gajillion things to do other than follow the Lakers.

With so many other distractions they do not have a captive audience like some sports franchises do, so when you look at the big picture and take everything into consideration the fact they are still the biggest most popular sports franchise in the area (with one of the largest fanbases in the world) it's pretty damn amazing.

Twitter Trends...

The reality is.. LA has a bunch of other crap to talk about. The diversity is crazy. When you head north. Sacramento, Okaland, and etc. There's not much in comparison. They have their football teams I guess.

I mean it's no surprise that college football is so damn popular in some "remote" areas because they really don't have anything else of interest.

This map might give some perspective into the size of the city:

It's a hugely diverse place.

You also have to think that there might be a lot of people not talking about the team because they just aren't good right now. I live in Jersey so there are a lot of Knicks fans around here and during that 2012 - 2013 season when the Knicks were a second seed, there were a ton of people around here that got behind the Knicks. The next season that hype fell off and it didn't come back until Porzingis finally gave people something to be excited about again. I have friends who would never go to basketball games now going with their families and significant others because there is something exciting going on.

I don't know how the fans out in LA are, but I'd like to imagine that there might be a similar rejuvenation of Laker fans in LA depending on what happens this offseason.

What do I think ? And this is coming from a guy who lives in LA and knows very damn well how DAMN HARD it is to get Lakers tickets......frankly you don't know the hell you're talking about. Even the bandwagon fans that live outside of LA don't out number the fans here in LA.

Surprised the Celt's don't have more fans, was thinking they'd have the second biggest bandwagoner base

People born in 80s 90s, so the coveted 18-35 demographic that is probably most likely to fill out that online poll, only knew the Celtics as a laughing stock for most of their lives including all of their childhood when loyalties are formed.

And that's just the city of Los Angeles, the part served/governed by the City of LA... the county of Los Angeles goes way way beyond those boundaries
