FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Jacque Jones-to-Florida deal won't happen, "barring an unexpected reversal."
The Marlins wanted Jones as their primary center fielder, but apparentely the Cubs were quite desperate enough to get rid of him. Either they refused to pay the majority of the $7 million he's still owed or they wanted a better prospect in return if they were going to eat the salary.

Jacque
I understand that Jacque is having a horrible year, doesn't get to play much, etc., but..... he had a great year last year and was one of our best players.
.285 avg 27 hr 81 rbi
I could name you a lot of outfielders that have been worse than jacque for the cubs (aheemmmm murton)... don't forget his clutch hits and although he threw the ball straight into the ground a lot... he still had the best arm in the OF last field other than pagan if you count him. He also got a lot of crap right away for starting 0-15 and never really has recovered to truly be loved by cubs fans even though he had a very good year last year. So give credit where credit is due. This still does not mean that I don't want to trade him. He needs a change of scenery and I will bet anyone that he hits .280 and makes a positive impact on whatever team he goes to.

You could also say Juan Pierre had a good year last year for the Cubs. He was terrible until the end of the year. Jones quietly got his numbers up, although at one point he was playing very well.
In another sense Felix Pie has been struggling lately, but the Cubs continue to win with him in the lineup. With his defense and other intangibles, he just seems to get the job done.

I will guarantee he doesn't sniff .280 with his new club.
What good is having a good arm if you throw it into the grass?
He started off like 0-30 and made tons of base running blunders. He cried about the wrigley fans, he was useless. That's why people didn't like him and he should have been gone last year. I have seen 12 year old OFers with a better skill set than Jacque Jones. There is no denying he was atrocious and I'm appalled I had to read this.
He was one of the best players on a 96 loss team? Should we be impressed? He padded his stats on a team that lost almost 100 games. Enough said.
Clutch hits? Other than the Cardinals game where he hit a 3 run homer I did not see one.. Maybe it was when the Cubs were 20 games out of first place? You have to be playing for something to get a clutch hit..
I find it hard to believe you can sit here and defend this buffoon with a straight face.
The only positive impact he will have is for the other teams in the division he is traded too. Hell, I would love to trade him into the NL Central.

Personally I think we're being easy on him.
I could really rip into Jones if I wanted to. But there is really no point. He is a scrub and is certainly on his way out of Chicago.

I just had to laugh at that first statement.... And so your saying that a guy who has a decent year for a last place team doesn't mean anything. What about Andre Dawson winning the MVP for the last place Cubs?

Also click on this... there are several clutch hits in april when the cubs were still decent...
the one against the Cards like you mentioned... the three run jack against the marlins in a tie game in the eighth... the one in may of last year in the comeback game against the chi sox. several very good defensive plays (plays murton undoubtedly could not make), etc. I am not saying that Jacque shouldn't be traded... he needs a change of scenery and right NOW he and the cubs need to go separate ways, but as all of the murton supporters say... look at his year last year and appreciate him for that.

What Murton supporters? Neither are good enough to play everyday for a good team. But I'd rather have Matt as our 4th OF since he can at least improve. And I'm thinking of suspending you for comparing Andre Dawson to Jacque Jones.*
*Okay, I'm joking.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins are no longer interested in acquiring Jacque Jones because the Cubs are unwilling to pay a large percentage of his remaining contract.
The newspaper reports that the Twins and Cubs were working on a deal before the Marlins stepped in, but likely won't resume talks even though the trade to Florida fell through. Jones played for the Twins from 1999-2005 before leaving as a free agent.
