Jackson & Jennings Backcourt...

Post#1 » by GreekAlex » Fri Jan 29, 2016 4:30 am

I remember hearing SVG say after Brandon got comfortable, he would experiment with a Jackson/Jennings backcourt. Any word on when he might roll this out? I was excited to see what that would look like and I'm sure I'm not alone. Is there anyone else interested to see what they can do together and if so what are your expectations?

Alright. Here's the thing guys. The reason SVG doesn't want to change the rotation is because we are winning. I think he's rolling with what he knows has been working and will keep going until he's forced to try something else. I think we will eventually see a Jackson and Jennings lineup much like how we just saw SJ with Morris. We'll see it during foul trouble and mismatches and when Meeks comes back. I personally can't wait to watch Stanley Johnson start at SF. I think he's the answer to our future.

I'd be surprised by them being on the court at the same time. I would be utterly astounded if it were to appear successful.

He probably doesn't use it cause they are both bad at defense.

Without Jennings trademark explosiveness and capacity to score in bunches, I would hesitate to put them out their together. That being said, there may be a night when Jennings has a real good rhythm going running the offense and Jackson needs to come in to take over. In that scenario, I could see SVG rolling out the lineup and gambling with their defensive struggles.

Also, with the way Jackson has been playing defense as of late, the likelihood of a Jennings/Jackson pairing improves. Right now, I'm glad to see Stanley Johnson used as an additional playmaker on the floor. I'm enjoying the better measure of control KCP has been playing with. I'm excited about Jackson giving effort on defense. Baynes' positive impact on the game. And happy to see Mook get a shot playing the four.

If we get Drummond giving consistent and intelligent effort on D...
If we can get a healthy and productive Meeks returning to the lineup...
If we can get Jennings closer to himself with his scoring bursts and swaggy play...
If we can get overall stingy team defense...

we will a strong run to the playoffs and in the second half of the season and peak in time for the playoffs.

The defense argument goes out the window when we've faced the likes of Aaron Brooks and E'twuan Moore backcourts. We've also seen a Mudiay/Foye backcourt. I feel like we've seen Burke and Neto together but I can't remember. If other teams are playing 2 PGs then no reason to not be able to match up.

The great concern with pairing Jackson and Jennings for me has been Jackson's overall lack of effort on D compared with Jennings' physical limitations coming off his significant injury. Jackson has the size, strength, and athleticism to guard both backcourt positions. He has just lacked the initiative. And in some cases he's looked completely clueless on D. As for the Bulls and Nuggets, Moore (6'4" 191lbs) and Foye (6'4" 213 lbs) have the size and strength to guard the two. As for the Jazz, I can't remember a time when Neto and Burke have been paired together, but if they have, both those undersized guys give effort.

Still, I hear what you're saying, but I think the defense argument for us is different from those other backcourts. Jackson's history of poor effort and Jennings still not being 100% gives me pause in pairing them. As I was trying to suggest above, I believe we will see J & J tandemed together as the season wears on.

not sure where you got the idea that SVG was going to push a jennings/jackson backcourt. He's been pretty explicit that he wasn't going to do that. He said that there might be a situation due to matchups or foul trouble where it could happen, but that he had no intention of making it a regular part of the rotation.

He mentioned it a few times in the off season after we signed Reggie as questions about Jennings place on the team kept creeping up. I read it in a Laglois article where he quoted SVG, in detroitnews & free press articles, and I believe he mentioned it on the Lowe Post podcast. It has not been discussed as of late.

Stan did say he will try it in limited minutes depending on matchups for short spurts in the game.

Reporters have asked Stan about it a ton of times. His response is always along the lines of "There might be a time where that matchup would work, but it's not something we are looking to go to". He's not going to be experimenting with it or trying to make it a part of our normal rotation even in low minutes. There might be some combination of the opposition going small and 2 guard foul trouble that would force Stan's hand, but it's obviously not something he is interested in putting out there.
