Calvin Johnson retiring...

Post#1 » by Otis Driftwood » Sun Jan 31, 2016 10:59 pm

Only reason I even post this is the following.

Matthew Stafford will be an UFA after 2017.

I just saw breaking news a short time ago. Being reported Megatron is retiring injuries. Any takers, that Johnson will SOON UNRETIRE and play for a contender for a couple years to get a ring.

The Cowboys or any other team would still have to give up compensation for him right?

How old will Stafford be at the beginning of the 2018 season?

I believe so, but not really sure. There is some talk up here in Maine on some of the local sports talk radio, that the Patriots might make a play for him, if the price is right.

If anyone could talk the price down it would be Belichick. Didn't they get Randy Moss for a 4th rounder at about the same point in their careers?

I believe he'll be 30. That wouldn't be an issue at all.

A couple of months ago, Gosselin wrote an article suggesting the Cowboys QB of the future might well be Stafford. Dude definitely needs a change of scenery. What would be better than coming back home to Highland Park?

I sure hope Stafford is not our QB of the future.

First things first... there would be the matter of paying the Lions any prorated salary he might have been paid. And make no mistake - the Lions will go get it. They got over $3M from Barry Sanders when he walked away from the game.

Good. So we can go full force now in the draft, and go all out on defense. Stafford will be here in 2 years. Yipee !!!

I think you're also assuming that Stafford will be free. Early in the season I remember hearing talk about the Lions maybe wanting to part ways with Stafford but by the last quarter of the season Stafford was playing well. I think he's done enough that they will keep him.

Maybe... or maybe he looks at the Lions roster that is about to undergo a serious makeover (I.e.; rebuild) and decides "Man - I don't have the stomach for a rebuild". By that time - we have a couple of solid drafts... and an old QB on his last legs... and no QB of the future because we didn't draft one...

It's worth consideration.

Well - we don't have one and you're dead set against drafting one so unless you see us going to the Wing T I'm not sure what your vision is.

That's mine. And it's not like Stafford is a bum.

It's worth consideration if he's free and if the Cowboys have not drafted a QB by then. I personally just don't think he'll be free. The Lions will have to have drafted a QB in order for them to let Stafford go.

Its not that. I just don't like his gun slinger mentality approach.

My opinion on addressing the QB position currently is this: You guys know defense is number 1 on my list. It has been for 4 years now. Its no secret to those of you that have known me for quite a while. I also want our #2 to be spent on defense. After that, I'm willing to bend on addressing our other needs. I'm willing to take a shot in the late rounds on Luke Falk of Washington State. If not, I think Colt McCoy would be a perfect fit here as Romo's back up. I have the feeling RGIII goes to Houston.

I can definitely understand your desire and reasoning for loading up on defense. I also know that there is a risk of a QB taken in the 1st round being a bust. I just think that a QB taken in the 2nd and beyond has a higher chance of being a bust than a QB taken in the 1st.

If they were going to draft one in the 3rd I'd be interested in Dak Prescott from Miss St. They won 9 games in the SEC and destroyed NC State in that last game. He also had a really good showing at the Senior Bowl.

Thought Johnson was retiring. If he doesn't by march 9, Lions get a 24 million $ cap hit.

Unless they cut him by then. That's what I think happens if he decides not to retire.

If Johnson was serious about retiring, like I thought he was, I thought he would have done it by now. You guys get the same feeling as me and suspect something fishy coming up?
