The thing with his type of coach... new and hence have something to prove.
Is BAD for a terrible team, because Suns need to bow out of the playoff race and go get a significant asset in the draft.
Watson on a established team, a team with its star(s) and solid core, like the Pelicans or Kings, makes more sense.
There is an exception though... that is when a coach like Watson and the GM, has an agreement. A permission to "develop" the team's youth rather than focus on getting veterans huge minutes to try to win.
Also, what is Watson's reputation based on?
How is he respected around the league, with 6 months D-league coaching experience and 6 months assistant coaching experience in the NBA, how does that warrant respect. Respect as in he is a "cool" guy, who has swag and shakes hands like he is one of the players?... because thats not coaching material.
Suns should be looking at someone like Brett Brown, who is a Popovic pupil, but also in full agreement with the GM to "develop" the young and also try to get a high pick. Once the core is formed, I can see Brown to start to aim on getting key pieces.
Blatt would of been nice, but might be expensive.... and Sarver does not want to pay for a expensive coach it seems.
Earl Watson was pegged as a future NBA head coach a long time ago already. We do not know exactly why but this talk came from NBA people so obviously he is respected around the league.
Just be happy it is not Bjorkren. Listen to his interviews, there is no way someone like that can take control of a NBA locker room and get respect from the players. He does not have an edge and comes across way too much like a nice guy, kinda like the typical nice gay dude on a top model fashion show.
