Blue Jays have acquired OF Darrell Ceciliani from the New York Mets

The 25-year-old made his major-league debut last season hitting .206/.270/.279 in 75 trips to plate. The left-handed hitter recorded one home run and three RBI in his time with the major-league club, adding five steals.

Ceciliani was significantly more productive at the triple-A level hitting .345/.398/.581 with nine home runs and 36 RBI in 255 plate appearances while calling hitter-friendly Las Vegas home. Over the course of his minor-league career his speed has been his calling card as he’s stolen 125 bases in seven seasons.

Looks like he raked in AAA, is he our new Travis Snyder? If Pompey flops and Saunders gets injured he could see some significant playing time. Especially if he can get on base a bit with his speed.

Strange that they would ditch a cheap guy like that, after a good track record at AAA. Its not like 75 big league at bats means anything. Numbers game I guess.

It remains to be seen what the youngster can do with a full opportunity, but he’s shown some promise. He logged an impressive .345/.398/.581 slash and contributed nine home runs and 16 steals in his 255 plate appearances at Triple-A last year, and has generally swung the bat well during his time on the farm.

Notably, too, Ceciliani drew strong ratings from defensive metrics in his short, 129-inning run in the majors last year. He can be deployed all across the outfield, too, adding to his versatility.

That stat-line in Las Vegas isn't very meaningful.

Looks like solid insurance in case Pompey can't hack it. Depending on the player to be named, it's a solid pickup.

Not even close. Pillar was rated as a 93 wRC+ hitter by Steamer last year. Ceciliani is rated at 74 wRC+ this year, which is considerably worse. It's like Gerardo Parra vs Jordan Schafer; one is almost league average, and the other is a borderline 5th OF who sticks around because he runs fast (or I guess for Schafer, also because he throws fast). Pillar was also a plus defender in CF. I have no idea how good a defender Ceciliani is.

I honestly didn't look past the name on this lol. I read "raked in minor leagues, very good defender, has speed, didn't get many ABs in majors" and compared it to how Pillar read like that in 2013/2014.

If every cash deal turned into Pillar that would be great though.

Offensive numbers are inflated in the PCL. That was the case when our AAA affiliate was present, and as far as I know it's still true.

During the same year that Mike McCoy put up a .195/.267/.244 line for the Jays, he posted a .310/.411/.469 line in Vegas.
