Weeks
I haven't heard any rumor or anything about something remotely close to this, its just my own thinking.
With all the young guys on this roster that are going to be really good (Fielder, Braun, Hardy, Gallardo, etc.) and their contracts expiring at various points over the next few years, its going to be very hard to keep all of them. In fact, I think its almost a certainty that we can't (or won't).
Any chance they look at maybe moving Weeks (either alone or in a package) to help pick up a good starter and/or bullpen help? Of all their young guys, he might still have the most all around potential, but he might also be the easiest to replace right now. They could move Hall back to 2nd and bring Gwynn up to play center.
Thoughts?

I wouldnt want them to make this move for multiple reasons.
1. Bill Hall is getting better and better in the outfield and has a good bat
1a. Tony Gwynn? No thanks, he will be a good player but I don't think it will be for 3-4 years.
2. Also we must remember that we have an owner who actually opens his check book. We should have this core for a good while.

It's true that eventually these guys will be getting big bumps in salary all around the same time.
Melvin/Attanasio are hopefully already putting a long range plan in place.
Revenue is up big time this year. That helps. Hopefully we continue winning this season and beyond, keep the revenue up.
Sheets is done after next season, it will be interesting to see what happens with him.
Jenks is gone after this season, that frees up some money.
At some point one or two of our youngsters may get traded, I just hope it's to make the team better, not because of money.

Expect Sheets to re-sign. He is the one player that Melvin has gone after every time he had a chance to leave. We will lock him up long term... again.
I think that LaPorta will be on the fast track to being our new left fielder, but that we will need someone in the short term. I think that Jenkins will sign back here, but for less money.
I think that we will ship out some of our prospects to bring in a pitcher. Well, I'm hoping, and it would probably be a smart move. We have a ridiculous amount of good pithcers at the MLB level right now, and could spend some of the younger ones. We could also trade a player like Tony Gwynn Jr. that has a high trade value right now.

Thats just being naive now, come on now. Of course we are going to have to make a trade in the next 3 years because we wont be able to afford some of these guys.

Exactly my point. If not Weeks, who do we lose? Yes, Hall is starting to come around in center, but no reason he couldn't be moved back to second. As for Gwynn, we haven't seen him with enough regular playing time to know what he could be. I agree, I'd rather have Hall in center and Weeks at 2nd, but if we can't keep everyone, it would be better for us to be proactive and trade them so we at least get something out of it.

Actually, yes, we are. Weeks is one of my 2 or 3 favorite players on the team - I'd hate to see him leave for that reason. But in reality, we aren't going to be able to keep everyone.
So, if Weeks stays, who ends up leaving?

It really sucks to say this but i think the 2 players that are going to demand and deserve the most $ is Fielder and Braun....I would hate to see either of them go but its not going to be easy to keep both. But hey like I said before Antanassio does have a big checkbook.

If laporta turns out, I think the best thing to do is trade Prince. Here's why. . . .
We could lock Hardy, Weeks, Hart and Braun up early to good but discounted deals similar to Seizmore in Cleveland. Then we can put LaPorta in Princes spot assuming he becomes the good hitter he's projected to be and we get some superstud AAA prospects in exchange for Prince. I'll be we could get a 22 yr old pitcher similar to Gallardo, a relliever and maybe a top tier position prospect.
All I'm saying is that I think Prince is a very good player but the salary he's going to demand will be crippling. I'd rather have Hart and Hardy than Prince and I think that is about what we're looking with salary. Plus, Prince would fetch us some elite prospects where Weeks would not.

You guys are really jumping the gun here. Weeks and Prince aren't even arby eligible until 2009. We have their rights until 2011. Braun is making minimum wage (300K or so) for the next three years then has three years of arby; same with Yo. Weeks and Prince both make didly again next year.
It would be nice if we could do what we did with Hall with Hardy and buy out his arby years and tack on an extra year. In arby, players never get close to what they'd get as FA. Soriano only made $5 million in his first arby which is less than half of what he'd make as a FA. He hit 38 HR's (5th in the AL), 36 2B, and 35 SBs (4th in the AL) the year prior to that.
My main concern right now is Cordero (he's a straight FA) next year and Sheets the next year. Cappy, Bush, Vargas, and Wise will also all be in their first years of arby next season.
