You can always light into guys. It will make up for things some but not much. You are far better off not having to if you have a firm grip from the get-go.
Phil didn't operate from that philosophy of cracking down on his players.
Positive teaching and standards, with a steel plan, mix in rewards with playing time, come down on guys like a ton of bricks when needed. Yelling and screaming and challenging guys' pride is a cheap shortcut if you haven't done the work to get there.
Phil reached guys and knew how to keep everybody on the same page before he had to punish them. The battle was won before the first bullet was fired.

Typically, in the NBA the motivation to play hard comes from within the player. That's why I totally disregarded this idea that Fisher was doing a good job because guys were playing hard. Playing hard comes from passion and intensity you either have that or you don't. You can have it sometimes and not other times. But I mean if the paycheck don't inspire you to play hard night and night out or the thirst to win... that ultra-competitiveness no coach is going to save you.. at least not directly.. that's why Phil resorted to unconventional ways to motivate his teams.

That's probably expected. But the problem is when the Knicks play like they have like zombies and/or appear ill prepared that's got to be on the coaching staff.
Logic would say that worse players look like zombies more often than better players.
The better the players the better the consistency and good play from the start of a game.
Coaches are responsible for scheme and managing the roster during the course of a game. Motivation(players playing hard) is in fact important, but can only go so far when you have sub-par players.
You wanna get on Fisher for his lineups? Fine. My rebuttal will always be(the last two years at least) "who is he supposed to play instead". When you name me ANOTHER crappy player your argument goes down the drain. He's not shunning good players in favor of bad ones. They are all bad through average sans Melo and KP(who both need to get it together). So again, I'm asking what do you want from Fisher? Take a step out of your feelings and really look at what's presented.

That is why Fisher isnt going anywhere, because Phil even knows that he himself would not get much better results out of these groups the past couple years. You have to believe that there was a strategy in place when Phil first took over and went after two guys who never coached before.

Gameplan is not the same as effort or energy.
Gameplan is knowing what to do. Effort and energy is putting forth maximum focus to do it.
I've never in my entire life had a boss that could make me put in maximum focus every M-F every day of the year. Have you?
If I had someone on my team that was slacking, absolutely I'd make sure they weren't slacking or were no longer on my team. Why? Because it's my job to make sure they are productive or else. And i'm not getting paid anywhere near what Fisher is.
Most guys on this board probably would not want to work for me.
Getting rid of them? Sure.
I'm interested in how you would make them perform 365 days a year though.

By understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and putting them in roles that they can succeed at. Make sure there's no ambiguity when it comes to role and responsibility that way they understand that if they fail there's no one else to blame. Be fair and be appreciative but make sure folks know you are in charge. Make sure you have their backs. You'd be amazed how well folks appreciate it and respond to it.
Edit: maybe some of you would actually like to work for me?

Fair enough.
In your estimation, did Pop not do those things when his team played the Pelicans, Warriors, and Cavs?

Oh I'm sure he gave them a tongue lashing afterwards (not acceptable, that they failed to deliver and that it won't be tolerated)...but that they are still a team and that's its all in, everyone together...and onto the next game. Whatever he does they clearly respond to it. Same way players that otherwise despised each other in Chicago responded to Phil Jackson during the championship years. Coaching does matter in the leadership arena. It's not just about X's and O's.
