2016 Trade Deadline: What WILL EG do?

Post#1 » by pcbothwel » Fri Feb 12, 2016 4:36 am

With our record at 23-28, EG and staff have 6 days until the trade deadline and we are fading fast even as we get healthy. I think we are all pretty sure that we wont trade away a major piece (Wall, Beal, Otto, Gortat, etc.) nor will we trade for a major piece (I.E. Howard). So any trade will be us trading away one of Neal, Nene, or Dudley. Or possibly trading for a Terrance Jones or Markieff Morris.

What do you think happens?

Other option is do nothing. This team is clearly content.

I agree that the Wizards will probably not trade a major piece.

I can't imagine the Wizards trading for Markieff Morris given what happened in his last game. https://streamable.com/30mg

I think Ernie trades another minor piece like Neal for a backup big

its all good man. We got this. We're making the playoffs and because of that we will get KD. Someone said it would work out that way when we get to the playoffs....not sure who...but I'll go with it...cause we're making the playoffs...and thats like winning the championship. Mission accomplished. :-)

Seriously though... I want to see a lot of changes, but I expect very little. If we rid ourselves of the KD dream, then it may give management the wisdom/desire/etc to actually make a worthy change. Will that happen? Probably not. I hope I am wrong, as I want us to get another championship. 1978 looks pretty lonely.

What I do expect to happen is a firing of EG and possibly the coaching staff AFTER the trade deadline. Ownership will see that, after the trade deadline has passed and nearly nothing done, that the result is that this is not a playoff team, and it was not constructed well to go deep into the playoffs...which was the stated goal.

We're 1 game behind the 6th or 7th spot in the lottery. Once you get that far up, it would be pretty hard for me to say "let's make the push for the playoffs." I think they should find what they can for Dudley, looks like Toronto wants a power forward and while Dudley doesn't fit the traditional model of one, they need outside shooting and I think he's a good fit.

i don't think he does anything now

i think he's resigned to a mutual departing at the end of the season

there's not a trade out there that would get him out of this mess at the moment --I can't find any trades for a firesale either

stand pat and shut down wall and tank imo

It's like I said in another thread, target your assets and then target teams who have multiple picks in the first round. Toronto, Boston, etc. Heck, look at Utah, they're a stabilizing point guard away from probably making a good run in the playoffs. Sessions may not be the answer, but it'd be a lot better than what they have in Neto.

The "do nothing" idea is unlikely. They're going to go one way or the other: either sell assets and build for the future, or trade future picks for win-now assets.

I think management is genuinely torn between going all-in for a playoff berth, or to throw in the towel and begin the tank. I believe they are cognitively aware that making the playoffs is highly unlikely, but at the same time, both EG and Ted have huge egos and are unwilling to believe that they're plans have failed miserably. Also, if the team commits to tanking, it is likely to cost Ted some money in game attendance.

I'm hoping for the team to sell and tank, but I think it's unlikely. My guess is that they trade future picks for win-now assets. However, I think they're smart enough not to completely waste assets. They won't trade for a soon-to-be UFA like Ryan Anderson because the odds are too high that he'll bolt in the offseason, which would be a massive embarrassment. I suspect they'll trade for a guy under a longer term deal, or they'll trade for a RFA with a small cap hold (like Terrence Jones).

The one thing that gives me hope is the fact that Wall and Beal played really heavy minutes over the last 2 games. I think it hints at a sense of desperation on the part of Wittman, as if he was told that he had to win those 2 games for management to commit to a playoff push. Since they lost the Milwaukee game and fell further out of playoff contention, maybe they'll sell at the Trade Deadline.

Truthfully, it's not like people are showing up anyways.

Let's take Utah for example. Burke is out injured, Neto is arguably one of the worse starting point guards in the league. Would Utah do a Sessions + 2nd round picks for their 1st rounder? Maybe try and get Trey Lyles?

I think only true contenders are willing to pay top dollar for a 30-game rental of one of our veterans. We could probably trade Sessions to Utah, but they won't give up a lot to get him. Maybe a second round pick.

I did look for teams with multiple picks but I just don't see why a team would give up a 1st for a rental of Dudley--even a team like Boston with a ton of picks, its just not smart.

I don't see them selling. Its the last thing I can see them doing. That requires too much competence.

So they'll look to buy but I think we've acquired enough losses now that they are going to be really hamstrung. Don't want any long term contracts but don't want to give up our 1st for a rental either. So maybe Sato for a rental as a grasper move--something like that, or Hump for a player that fits us better who's got limited years contractually..

The loss last night was a bit huge. It's only one game, but its a convincing loss while relatively healthy to a bad team. Getting to that 8 seed is starting to look impossible. It would require an overwhelming talent acquistion--not just one player but two. Gasol/Horford/Gallo in combination with another guy. We don't have the assets for that.

Not to nitpick, but I really want this to be about what we think they WILL do, not should. I think they SHOULD trade Nene, Dudley, and Neal for any collection of top 40 picks they can get.

Nate, while you say it is unlikely Ted/EG do nothing, you give a perfect reason as to why they will do nothing in your 2nd paragraph:

This is why I say they do nothing. The best they can possibly hope for is a late 1st, but probably an early 2nd in 2016 and another in 2017/2018. Its not like we have a Whiteside or Dwight expiring on this team that would bring back rebuilding assets. So I dont see Ted selling away our backups and hurting their egos, lose money, and demoralize Wall/Beal/Otto just to get that #35 pick.

I also dont see Ted allowing EG to trade any young player or 1st, so they simply stand pat and hope that they can make a run in a East that has teams falling apart.

Toronto is the only contender with an unencumbered 1st round pick.
Cleveland could trade their 2018 pick.

Being "torn" is not the same thing as being ambivalent. I just don't see any way to justify doing nothing. They either want to push for the playoffs, or they want to position themselves for the future. Doing nothing will result in them accomplishing neither goal.

Nate - it takes two to tango. There probably are no/not enough favorable trades that can be made for either scenario. Meaning, standing pat or making irrelevant moves may be what we are left with.

Trading our vets for anything is preferable to standing pat. At the very least, we could send Dudley to OKC for some package of 2nd round picks (they have theirs and the CHA pick) and McGary.

They won't do that lol. You really gotta be bottom barrel dumb (Billy King Nets) as a GM to forfeit your future that far down the road.

Again--I don't think they won't try, but the deal won't be there and I think EG will be under too many restrictions. If we could have gotten to within 3 games of the 8 seed then we'd probably be in danger of trading a 1st for a rental, but we're so far back now that I can't see Ted giving a green light.

Like I said, a non first move is in play--Sato's contract. Hump for a similar level of talent to see if they can spark us like the Miller for Sessions move, but nothing with any long term impact.

Nate,
Signing Dudley, Neal, Gooden, Blair, Hump, and Anderson to 1 year deals was positioning themselves for the future/2016 FA. While I fully agree that they should try to get another pick, I dont see not trading Dudley/Nene as being complacent with the team as constructed.

Again, teams like the Rockets(Howard), Heat(Whiteside), Hawks(Horford and Teague), and Suns(Tucker, Bledsoe, etc.) are teams that really need to make pivotal decisions about selling off as they have real assets that appear to be dwindling away.

If the Hawks do nothing and let Horford walk, they failed. If we dont trade Dudley for two 2nds doesnt exactly make or break our path.

Again, EG is crap and we should be selling. But its not like we have salary to dump or a legit starter we can trade like the other teams.
(Unless you count Beal or Gortat, but trading them is whole other bag of worms that I wont derail this thread into)
