Should the Nets retire Vince Carter's number?

Post#1 » by MrDollarBills » Mon Feb 15, 2016 4:41 am

The Nets brass try to basically erase most of the NJ days outside of Kidd but Vince Carter was the 3rd best player to ever wear the name "NETS" across his chest

The time is coming. Me personally, I say that his number should be retired and he should be appreciated for his professionalism and high level play for this franchise.

He wasn't perfect but on those nights when he was on, which were many, he destroyed people. Such as:

damn...

Should the Nets retire Vince Carter's number?

Post#3 » by Paradise » Mon Feb 15, 2016 5:26 am

Nobody has worn number 15 since Carter was traded which is usually a good indication that his number will be retired. I think it won't happen until the Raptors do it first, though.

The 2000 era Nets were remembered mostly for Vince Carter/Jason Kidd duo. I can't see Carter not getting his jersey retired but I don't think it will happen until he officially retires from the league and it seems he's gunning for 20 seasons.

You're wrong and right at the same time. Donald Sloan is currently wearing #15. So yeah, nobody has worn #15

whoever voted no must have been a fan since they've moved to Brooklyn and don't realize how good VC was here.

The guy never had a season where he averaged under 20ppg. He was superb. And his game winners ALWAYS gave me chills. The absolute BEST was the game v. the Craptors, where he hit the game tying 3 pointer and then reverse dunk to win it in OT. So clutch.

I voted No. In my opinion, he didn't play with the team long enough.

Drazen died tragically I know, but he played here for 2 seasons and has his number retired.

VC was great here, but i dont think he played here long enough. i knwo he is up there for nets all time, but i think to get your number retired toy need to either be a lifer or lead the team towards a championship.

to me buck williams is the ultimate net. i think carter needed a few more years to reach that level.

Of course yes. He is the reason the Nets didn't flounder into obscurity for all of the post Finals years. And think about all the franchise records he holds.

I really don't get this argument. Kidd didn't play here that long either though.

The man is statistically one of the best 3 players in the history of this franchise. It's a no brainer.

To me he's always a raptor. He single-handedly dragged that franchise into relevance. Don't think he had that same impact on the nets imo, so I voted no. For the record though, I'm of the opinion that only one team should retire a player's number (kind of how a player chooses what team to go into the hall of fame with), so that's what I'm basing it on.

No.

I think teams should only retire numbers of legendary players for their franchise.

I know this isn't exactly the norm, and you can probably have a good argument for him to have the number retired(you'll be able to find examples around the league to support it), but I really think retiring a number should happen only in very unique situations and not just to everyone who has a nice run with a franchise. So by that, I don't think Carter should have his number retired with the Nets. Plus, as mentioned above, he'll always end up being remembered for being a Raptor.

Kidd is no brainer. Two final appearances... and an amazing highlight reel in the early 2000s. He'll also have his number retired with the Mavs and I also am not sure if that's the right thing --- I don't think it is --- but the Mavs have retired numbers of players who are less deserving than Kidd... or Carter for the Nets.

surprised at all the No responses.
easily my favorite Net. The guy played with such an aggressive attitude and was never afraid to step up and be the leader. The only guys that come close to being a leader like VC was Pierce and Garnett.
