Who is your all-time favorite mid-card wrestler?

Post#1 » by Dunthreevy » Fri Feb 12, 2016 8:03 pm

We've all got our favorite wrestlers and to some degree it always turns out to be quite a few repeats listed. So who was your favorite wrestler who was never quite a top star during their career? I'll start...

I'm going with Arn Anderson. I think Arn is unquestionably one of the best talkers and ring psychologists in the history of pro wrestling (at least in my lifetime). I've had a running theory that if I could sit down and have a drink with any wrestler in history it would be Arn. I'd just like to hear his stories on his time in the business. I think my early memories of watching WCW/NWA on TBS back in the late 80's/early 90's have always left a mark on me and Arn was pretty damn amazing back then. Also his time in WWE with Tully as The Brainbusters are really memorable to me even though they never got a major push. They were the tag champs but the focus back then was on Hogan/Savage/Warrior and if you weren't one of those guys you were pretty much just another mid-carder. My love for The Brainbusters is why I like Dash & Dawson in NXT so much now. They're a definite throwback (and a respectable knock off) to teams like Arn & Tully.

So who are your favorite mid-card guys? Also feel free to post any youtube clips that stand out to you as showing their awesomeness.

Off the top of my head it has to be Mr. Perfect. As a kid he was probably the only heel that I actually liked. He was cool. He could go in the ring and cut an awesome promo. Not to mention he had the greatest manager of all time Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. His entrance music was awesome, the way he spit his game out and then swatted it in one motion was cool, his towel, and I loved his finisher the Perfect flex.

I don't think any of the wrestlers I was a fan of growing up were HOF guys, haha. I liked Crush alot, Tatanka, Papa Shango and Bam Bam Bigelo.

not quite sure my all time favorite. 2 that come to mind are D'lo Brown and Test.

d'lo i always thought connected pretty well w/the crowd, had great charisma and maybe my favorite frog splash ever. guess he got depushed cause of Droz situation

test, i always loved his viciousness and his running big boot. thought he always did a great job getting heat as a heel. good moveset. f*cked himself a couple times when the company wanted to push him, a shame he passed so early.

another guy who i loved was sandow. he had an 8 month stretch where he was pretty consistently one of if not the best part of the show. the new day have done a phenomenal job replacing him this past year

I forgot about Test, I liked him a lot too. He had one of the best movesets ever. Speaking of awesome movesets, Kanyon was another one of my favorite mid-carders.

I would have to go with the big Valbowski (Hellooooo Ladies) Val Venis. At the time in the WWE (F) I always thought he had some of the best promos that were funny as hell specially the debut of his first promo in 1998. Solid mic skills, ladies loved him lol and was a good talent in the ring as well. You would think the wwe would have given him a bigger push back than, but he would have had to get over on the other main event stars in that era. Hes definitely underrated.

The easy answer is Perfect. He and Piper are the two best to not hold the world title.

They've made it pretty difficult to navigate through the search engine now. I did a search for Arn Anderson the other day and it pulled up a TON of old clips but instead of sorting them by match, it sorts them by a combination of match and finish of the match, so you end up getting duplicate hits and it just clutters the search results. it's really stupid.

Some of the people mentioned above were higher than mid-carders.

I always liked Brad Armstrong - not to be confused with his brothers - or father, for that matter. He was certainly the best looking of the Armstrongs, probably the best technical rassler of the family, and the most athletic. He wasn't a great interview but always seemed to have untapped potential in that regard.

The very first name that popped in to my head was Mr. Perfect as others mentioned. Always loved that guy and he was poised if I recall to be the next in line after Hogan but ahead of Bret and Shawn. It's a shame he never made it.

Konnan was always a favourite of mine in his WCW days also. Shout out on the Raven mention too.

Davey Boy and Owen were also up there for me. Steamboats WWF career topped out at IC title but that guy should have been much more. I know he won the NWA title but he should have been bigger in the WWF.

Damn you beat me to it! Raven was great in terms of his character/charisma. Speaking of Raven and his Flock, I always thought that Kidman was underulitized. He always had damn good ability in the ring. I felt that WCW really dropped the ball with him. They had him over in a good feud with Hogan in early 2000 during the New Blood/Millionaires club storyline. After that feud they did nothing with him.

Also, Lance Storm has got to be right up there as a GOAT candidate mid-card guy
