Aaron Gordon's future

Post#1 » by locomagicfan » Tue Feb 16, 2016 9:55 pm

I was in attendance at the NBA All-Star Saturday night and ran into James Borrego. Had a hat with him and asked him point blank: Is AG a future 3 or 4 for the magic. He said definitely the future 4. He said shooting is a big roster problem however.

I was very happy to hear that. Considering today's trade of Tobias and the pieces we got in return, I thought this maybe deserves its own thread and was an appropriate time to share.

AG is a much better shooter this season then he was his injured rookie year. The AG starting today is not the same player JB coached. I think he will continue to work on his J and could possibly start at the 3 depending on who we pursue at that PF spot. I can also see him at the 4 so it will just depend on matchups.

I think today's Tobias move solidifies AG at the 4 spot. Plus the chemistry over the weekend between Elf/AG/Mario is undeniable.

Our lineup will hopefully be:

Elf/Jennings
Oladipo
Fournier/Hezonja
Gordon/Ilyasova
Vuc/Smith

Fryer and Napier are now completely expendable

You are what you can defend. AG can defend everybody.

He is elite defending both, it really doesn't matter. It does look like 4 suits him more offensively however. Allows him to hang out closer to the basket, which is great for us because since starting he has been a beast rebounder.

I guess this confirms what I've said all summer. AG is a PF. ;)

so is Steph not a PG? because he doesnt always guard opposing PG's, they move Klay over on them.

i dont agree with that generalized statement

I want him to play 3, not a fan of the fournier small forward situation even though he is better at the Sf....... But doesn't he give up as much points as he gets?

Steph can defend PG's just fine. Klay is a way of giving them another look. Put it this way... can Steph defend any position other than PG? Not really, so it still stands.

Harris' trade certainly reads that Gordon is a projected starter next season. He will obviously play forward. But whether this is as a SF or a PF depended on the FA market.

What?

What I'm saying is he doesn't need to be labeled with any one position when he can basically defend any player on the court.

I really think Harrison Barnes is going to break out, especially if starts for a team desperately needing a go to man. I think he's our plan B/C.

He wouldn't look too bad next to Gordon, I definatley think if we miss out on KD we will be looking for a starting SF (Barnes/Batum come to mind)

You are what you can defend is not the same as saying a guy can guard multiple positions. Especially when the original discussion was about what position AG would play going forward.

You and me both. Lot of arguments about him being too thin (as if he'd never gain weight).

Trading Harris opens Mario to be our long term SF. Before I thought maybe we'd have Mario go to the 2 and bench Vic. So for now Evan starts, then you flip those two guys when he's ready and Evan brings scoring to the bench (along with Jennings, Ersan and Smith).
