Would you prefer we had traded for Harris or Anderson?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed Feb 17, 2016 6:30 pm

Reports say a three way deal was discussed that would have brought Anderson here instead of Harris. Assuming the price for both was the same - Ilyasova and Jennings - would you have preferred Anderson or Harris?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Harris for sure. He's younger, will have a better contract, and fits the team better too in my opinion. Anderson is too one-dimensional to be a real starting presence on a good team.

Harris, because he's younger, way more upside potential as a two way player. Anderson is a terrible defensive player.

I went Harris as well because I feel Anderson is going to get overpaid by a ton, is older, and just simply a specialist with no room for growth at his age. Betting on Anderson with UFA looming would have been much more of a risk than this Harris trade is...

I'm not sure it was a three way - but rather both Orlando and Detroit talked separately to NO about Anderson. Also things get murky because NOP would have had to include 8M more in salary to take on Harris.

Regardless who you like better as a player (I personally like Harris, but there's obviously a case for Ryno's 3pt shooting),

I'll take Harris at 23 years old, locked in for 4 years over Anderson at 27 years old about to become a UFA in the largest salary cap in NBA history.

^ This. Even if they were clones of each other on the court, four years younger and his contract status make Harris the clear choice, IMHO. Plus, while Harris does carry some injury baggage, Anderson carries an airline's worth.

I'd bet a wooden nickel that if SVG had traded for Anderson instead of Harris (and we heard rumors that Harris was available)...everyone would be voting that they prefer Anderson over Harris. That said, I'll go with Harris as well because SVG wants him and thats good enough for me.

I prefer Anderson, but knowing we could possibly still do a Harris-Anderson S&T in the summer if Harris doesn't fit, I'm glad we did it this way as opposed to gambling on Anderson right now. This is the best of both worlds.

I prefer Ibaka, but I know that wasn't an option.

If SVG had gotten Ibaka for Jennings and Ilyasova... well, that would be something. Something that might get him killed after already fleecing OKC for Reggie.

Anderson may be a better 3 pt shooter which is what we need, but I think we also needed a dynamic player that can create his own shot. Tobias is younger and will fit with our young core moving forward. Ryno is what we need to contend now.

That said, I like the idea of trading for someone now rather than waiting for free agency. If the past years have taught us anything, we are never in the mix during free agency so this really should be a last resort for us to acquire talent. Sure we can get guys like Meeks, but never a balance- shifting impact player like Harris or Anderson.

In the absence of Ryan Anderson, I suggest we do whatever it takes to trade for Kieff right now. This dude is practically being served to us on a silver platter right now:

1. He's not gonna cost more than a 1st round pick and some throw-ins
2. He wants to be here for no other reason than his brother is playing for us right now
3. The guy is aggressive and plays like he wants to win.
4. He can shoot the 3 and spread the floor for us
5. He is young and on a cheap contract
6. Did I mention that he wants to be here? This is not a common thing for a lot of NBA players. They probably hear Detroit, Michigan and think they can't even get a glass of clean drinking water anywhere in this state. Justice Winslow didn't even want to be here and he isn't half the player Kieff is.

In conclusion, please trade for this freaking guy already.

Presti ended up with two bad contracts out of that one. He probably has Stan's number blocked.

Wow, 17 to 0 at the moment!? Yeah, reasonable length of contract control, young, athletic? Seems pretty obvious for a rebuilding team. You're always looking for that chemistry/synergy. Can he play with the Piston's core? We're going to find out starting Friday.

Harris easy. Contract will be movable if he doesn't work out. Anderson's contract isn't going to be as movable. I love the possible versatility we have on D with switches, something Anderson probably couldn't do.

I think it's an interesting question. I'm not sure who exactly I prefer. But the one thing about the Tobias move, is that he has way more upside than Anderson AND the taking the trade that is available now is a way safer move than attempting to sign Anderson for 20 mil a year. Nothing guaranteed with FA.

I think when people criticize Harris' fit they forget that basketball isn't just about three point shooting. Tobias can spread the floor because he's an elite midrange shooter (44% between 16-23 feet this year). And back before the Miami Heat, every good team except the Orlando Magic spread the floor using a PF who can shoot from midrange. Obviously I'd prefer better 3 point shooting, but it's not a death knoll for our offense that he isn't an elite 3 point shooter.

And then you take into account everything else he can do on the court and it feels pretty good.

Anderson is a short term solution to one problem. And he misses 20-30 games a year. This is Tobias in a landslide. At worst we have an asset and this team needs as much value as it can leach in order to keep climbing the ladder.

Harris was a guy I wanted in the offseason and Anderson was not someone I wanted to throw a max contract at. So my choice is obvious.

Tobias Harris shot 36.4% from three last season, and I betting (hoping?) that some of the regression this season is due to the change in coaching philosophy. He's a better rebounder, better defender, and more versatile than Anderson, and oh yeah, is FOUR years younger.

Plus, there are reasons to believe he was misused in Orlando. With respect to low sample size, he's a very intriguing secondary PnR handler, something this team (and Reggie Jackson) desperately needs. He was Orlando's most effective post-scorer and rim-protector, suggesting he can spend time as a feature guy with bench lineups (probably better than KCP and Morris).

And most importantly, he's on a declining contract that is almost certainly cheaper than what Anderson will get. We don't have to pursue him in the offseason where everyone has money. Anderson may have been easier to integrate, but that's about it. This is a no-brainer.

Harris and it's not close.
I would rather keep ilyasova at 8 or whatever he's making next year over Anderson at 16+
Anderson just doesn't do it for me. He's going to be paid way too much this offseason.
