It's kinda odd how strong the nationalism is in US, the pressure to conform to other people's identity and forget one's own. It's just obnoxious. You can see that embodied not only in Mark Jones tweets here, but also in Ted Cruz's renouncing his Canadian citizenship. That is probably one of the most significant diferences between Canada and US. I don't think we really have such obnoxious nationalism in Canada.

He wasn't exactly the most charismatic leader of the Liberal Party either, really hard to measure the contribution of "nationalistic Canadian pride" in this regard. That was only just post-Dion and in a time where the Liberal Party overall was lacking appeal for many reasons.

A lack of confidence in a particular person doesn't require elitism on the part of Canadians, and it is certainly not any evidence of it. Stephane Dion was as stereotypically Canadian as you could possibly get maybe, being French-speaking too, and he was butchered just the same if not worse.

And to be fair Ignatieff did exactly what his detractors said he would do: leave Canada and continue his professorship at Harvard.

Let's not forget that teeny tiny little election fraud ruling that implicated the conservative party and Michael Sona, who spent time in prison despite being the fall guy.

You're right though, politicians win and lose elections when they try to outsmart themselves, which is the definition of academia and intellectualism. Iggy was not a personable guy, likewise with Thomas Mulcair. Mulcair has dual citizenship as well, but it never factored in to attack adds, even while he was the front-runner. In both cases, they were shut out of the Toronto area. Libs won 33 seats in 2011, NDP 44 in 2015.

But nationalism wasn't really the problem with Ignatieff. He went in rambling about how the Cons violated House of Commons procedures and were deemed 'in contempt of parliament' by the speaker of the house (who himself is an MP and thus an appointed partisan). Not insignificant, but not what you run a campaign on this day in age, considering the I'de rather hang with my smartphone general public dimwits. That being said, after his ambitions failed he did indeed leave for greener pastures. The just visiting thing wasn't far off frankly.
