The NBA Unicorn - The Stretch Big Index

Post#1 » by DeLong2 » Fri Feb 19, 2016 12:58 am

I created an index that would measure a player's ability to defend the paint, while stretching the floor on the offensive end. I only included players that have played at least 25 games in my analysis.

Statistically speaking, I have weighted their on court contributions in this order (most important to least important)
- Defensive Prowess (Blocking ability, defensive rebounding, etc.)
- Shooting Ability (3 point shooting --> mid range shots --> ft's)
- Offensive Generation (Ability to generate points for self and team mates)

Without getting into too much algebra and statistics, here are the NBA's most-coveted assets:

Thoughts?

That's a pretty interesting list if you managed to only choose formula weights and not player ratings.

I would be curious to see the details for the statistic if possible. I am guessing Marc Gasol is that high given the frequency of shots he challenges in the paint as compared to other players, but I am still somewhat curious, haha.

That said, I appreciate the chart, it actually portrays what one would expect relatively well.

Are your stats based on per36 or advanced metrics? Mind sharing your formula?

Ibaka way too low if the point is to rank guys who can defend the paint and stretch the floor...

If it were position adjusted I'm sure Ibaka would be in the top 2.
