What other organization is already really good, has the assets to acquire a Star AND will have the cap space to land a package deal of MAX players???
Boston is going to be very enticing for Durant if he decides to leave OKC, but still wants to be the MAN and win ships....of course Golden State could form a dream team, the Clippers can work out a S/T with Griffin, and Washington is his hometown...but Ainge has a relationship with Durant and can offer him something very unique.
Thomas-Butler-Durant-Jae-Horford with Smart-Turner-Hunter-Sully.....a team like that is of course a long shot, but POSSIBLE given the position Danny has created...
I've said this all along too.
The West is going to be brutal for the next 5 years- just getting to the WCF will be a nightmare. The East really only has the Cavs as a true contender.
Durant joining us would make another true contender and we have the coach, the GM, the 'team first' attitude that Durant loves.
Durant is the perfect star for us because he doesn't care about weather or Hollywood factor. He cares about winning basketball and the fact that we"
*Have the most championships
*were the first organization to draft an African American in the league (something I think the Celtics need to mention more often to try and shed the weird/misplaced tag that we are a 'white' town.)
*Are in the weak East with a team of gritty, hard working defenders
All play into our favor.
We're getting a sit down with him and it will be a real decision for him when he's talking to Danny Ainge, Bill Russell, and some other Celtics legends. Hopefully Pierce will be there too working for us.
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.
