I was inspired to finally post, because I need some info, and everyone knows this board has the most informed sports posters on the internet.
I know a lot of people (myself included for the most part) was fine with Danny sitting tight at the deadline, thinking that we will have the same assets this summer and can make a move then. Bigger trades generally happen in the summer anyway. Of course, the BK16 pick might be more or less valuable after the lotto, but I digress. Here is my one concern: matching salaries.
Come summer, we no longer have Lee's big expiring deal to use to trade. That was a huge asset, meaning we could send him, along with a bunch of draft picks, and bring in a good player without upsetting our core even a little bit. That's no longer true. Same for Sully and Zeller to a lesser extent. Say Blake or even Butler do go on the block this summer, let's forget for a second the debate over if we want them, I am only using them as examples. My questions are about CBA feasibility. How do we get them now without sending out players we actually really want to keep solely because we need to match salaries?
1. When do we need to decide on Amir? Could we trade him on draft night and then the team that get's him decline his 2017 option? Or does that option need to be picked up before then?
2. I know we can do sign-and-trades, but that is messy and an extra level of difficult. So assuming Amir's option has already been picked up (or not) by draft night... how exactly are we going to match salaries to bring in a big time (big money) player via trade without giving up core members of our team? The fortunate/unfortunate part of how our team salary structure is lined up - we don't have much/any dead money we are looking to ship out and most of our guys don't make very much money. So we would need to send out multiple guys (like 3, 4 or 5 guys!) who we don't really want to loose and the other team would need to have enough roster spots to take them all back.
Danny has set us up pretty sweet with great contracts and draft assets, but the one thing we don't have for the first time in a long time is a big expiring contract to ship out in a big deal. Thoughts? I know a bunch of you haters are going to say we can ship out Bradly, but even if we wanted to do that, he doesn't make all that much. Is the answer simply Amir and Jerebko? My concern there is that we don't want to pick up their options until we know if we are going to be able to use our salary cap space to sign a free agent. So their pick-up dates seem key - and that is why I have made my first post!
In short: 1. When are the option dates for Amir/Jerebko. 2. How do we match salaries for a Star this summer?
Thanks team! Happy to be here
