I love the rose-coloured glasses these people wear. They're the same ones that were barking at AA to sign Ubaldo Jimenez two years ago.

Wonderful to see the team is in good hands since Alex left...
What this illustrates is that FA's with draft pick compensation are severely penalized in Free agency. I expect this rule will be changed next year when CBA is up. The deal is good for his new team and his old team but sucks for the player. Happ was a pretty good value signing compared to what other FA pitchers received.

Re: Gallardo 3/35M Happ 3/36M....
Gallardo used to be an effective pitcher a few years ago and may be one of those pitchers that will always have a lower ERA then the numbers suggest, but the O's are the ones taking the chance on Gallardo continuing that trend. As his effectiveness on his pitches go, so do his strikeout rates - and that's a very dangerous formula in the AL East.
Jays got Happ who yes dominated the second half last year, and may very well be lucky, but has at least more upside that Yovani Gallardo at this point of their careers.

Besides the draft pick compensation, Happ actually got better last year. Gallardo's strikeout rate is alarmingly low.

Re: Gallardo 3/35M Happ 3/36M....
This discussion is hilarious. Happs deal is good value? He has better upside than Gallardo?
So much douchbagery could have been avoided if I mentioned Gallardo cost a 1st I guess haha. The Jays were better off signing nobody than paying Happ 14Mil at 36. Happ averaged less than 6 innings a start in Pittsburgh. Does sample size mean anything? Oh a 33yr old finally found the recipe to his success, huzah! Ink him. Perhaps his success was related to the fact he never went past 6 innings? But don't address that, focus on Gallardo.
I love this team so much, God I hope Happ succeeds. But I'm not the type of fan that talks myself into liking moves like this. By any chance did any of you gentleman defend Bargnani's contract extension? Lol. I hate the contract, especially because of Rogers cheapness to appease their shareholders. Its 10% of the Jays budget.
I concede that Garalldo is not a fair comparison, because there is no 1st attached to Happ of course his value is higher than it would be normally. Did I touch a nerve, Happ has been discussed to death in this forum has he? Sorry I don't read all the threads. And if I wanted to dump on this contract this is not a timely thread, my apologies. I don't want to open old wounds.

The Colin Farell gif is a more valid point than you have made to this point, though.

You gave up your right to a legitimate debate when you started this ridiculous thread for no reason other than to troll. Also, In Bruges is amazing.

Baltimore lost their 1st round pick too. Kinda important.

Don't forget about Baltimore's 1st round pick either!

Why was Happ signed? The Jays did not have a high end prospect pitcher to plug into the rotation, because a number of first round pitchers were traded by Alex. So why would the Jays want to give up another first round pick only to repeat the cycle?

See my last comment..who would you have rather signed? Chen? Kennedy? Leake? Samardzija?
Signing no one wasn't an option, our rotation was Stroman, Dickey, Estrada, Hutchison at the time.

I'd have liked them to sign Chen. I think the Marlins got a good deal with him. 3 years younger than Happ and a much better pitcher, and better than Estrada, too. You lose a pick still, but it's for a 5 or 6 year deal and becomes a bit more palatable. Could have let Estrada walk and got another pick back, and ended up with a much better pitcher for not much more money.

Looks like the O's are backing out of their deal with Gallardo due to something that came up on his physical. Making this thread even more hilarious.
Also hilarious because of the amount of times the O's have backed out on deals with free agents.

Baltimore will probably just go and get Fowler (if he can pass their physical) and call it a day.

There's a pretty big gap between the Chen contract and the Estrada extension. Chen is likely better but I'm not sure the added risk of his contract would have been worth it.
