hansborough made a big mistake coming to hornets. He is being buried on the bench, not being allowed to play and by the end of the season probably kicked out of the league, all because of incompetent coach. Hansborough should try to sign for the vet minimum on another team next season and only sign if he gets some playing time.

He is buried on the end of the bench because he is terrible. I was actually one of the people calling for him to get Hawes minutes earlier in the season, but after actually seeing him get some burn I have about zero interest in him ever seeing the floor unless there are injuries.

I hate Hawes and I still don't think there are very many circumstances where I would consider cutting into to his minutes to play Psycho T. Occasionally when all the other bigs are getting abused and playing like crap I wouldn't mind throwing him out there for a few minutes to let him try to go buck wild and annoy the other teams bigs, but thats really about it.

I seriously get this weird feeling of embarrassment by association whenever Hansbrough plays. Its that bad.

Did you guys see this latest post practice interview with Tyler?

http://www.nba.com/hornets/video/teams/hornets/2016/01/21/1453414435801-160121-tyler.mov-244364

Wow. His eyes always make him look crazy but his answers also were a bit loco. I think if I was a reporter I would stay away from interviewing him.

Agreed.

Good to see Tyler contributing the last two games. His defensive intensity seems to have rubbed off on the rest of the team. All of a sudden, in the fourth quarter against Orlando, they started playing like madmen. It carried over to last night, against the Knicks.

Against Orlando, I noticed that when Kaminsky drove into the lane, he was looking to pass to Hansbrough along the baseline, who was not making himself available. Tyler needs to get into position or cut into the lane more. After two or three more games playing in the rotation, he should start to feel more comfortable and develop some chemistry with Kaminsky, Lin, and Roberts. The drive into the lane and pass out to Daniels for a three last night was terrific.

Tyler may once again get his chance to show his usefulness to the team against Milwaukee. Hawes will be out for a week and Al Jefferson is just coming back from injury (again). Marvin Williams has a sore neck, and in any case may play small forward on Friday night. Tyler is still the team's leading rebounder by RB% and rebounds per 36.

Hansbrough will be ready if called. As always, I think the Hornets needs his toughness, skill, and energy. Good screens are few and far between on this team. He has developed a good rapport with Jeremy Lin on the court. Interior defense has remained a weakness except when Tyler plays. Surprisingly, the Bucks are the sixth best shooting team in the league this season.

The playoff hunt begins in earnest tomorrow night.

Now that two-thirds of the season are gone, let's compare how Hansbrough has done, in severely limited minutes, with the two guys ahead of him in the rotation, Hawes and Kaminsky. Stats are from Basketball Reference:

FG% TH .414...SH .408...FK .403 (terrible for all three)
RB% TH 14.5...SH 12.7...FK 10.3 (Hansbrough leads the team)
RB/36 TH 9.5...SH 8.3...FK 6.7 (Hansbrough leads the team)
Steals/36 TH 1.4...SH .8...FK .7
Blocks/36 TH .9...SH .8...FK .9
Turnovers/36 TH 1.4...SH 2.0...FK 1.4
OffRTG TH 107...SH 102...FK 104
DefRTG TH 103...SH 104...FK 105 (Hansbrough is tied for second on the team)
NetRTH TH +4...SH -2...FK -1
Win Share/48 TH .109...SH .086...FK .079
TS% TH .485...SH .511...FK .506 (Hansbrough is last on the team, largely because his FT% is 50%)

I used the per 36 stats since those are more comparable for bench players. Overall, they clearly show that Tyler should be getting more minutes, especially on nights when the defense or rebounding are weak. I venture to say that a spot in the rotation would improve his shooting statistics, especially that abnormally low free throw percentage.

In fairness, I should point out that the NBA.com site gives lower marks on DefRtg and OffRtg to Hansbrough than to Hawes and Kaminsky.

Hansbrough's defensive performance is consistent with last year's. Last year he was much better on offense, since he was playing with Lou Williams and Patrick Patterson, rather than Brian Roberts and Frank Kaminsky. Blocks, steals, and turnovers are higher, though. "T" stands for Toronto, "H" for Charlotte:

FG% T .521 (over ten percentage points higher)
H .414

RB% T 14.4%
H 14.5%

RB/36 T 9.0
H 9.5

Steals/36 T 1.0
H 1.4

Blocks/36 T .5
H .9

Turnovers/36 .7
H 1.4

OffRTG T 132 (25 points higher)
H 107

DefRTG T 107
H 103

NetRTH T +25 (21 points higher)
H +4

Win Share/48 T .156
H .109

TS% T .597 (over ten percentage points higher)
H .485

Put Hansbrough back in the rotation with guards like Jeremy Lin and Troy Daniels, and defenders like Marvin Williams and Courtney Lee, and you will be surprised how well the team does. He has a proven track record. Hansbrough's teams have made it to the playoffs every year except in his injury-shortened rookie campaign. Every team he has joined has shown more grit and tenacity after he came on the scene.

It has been a terrible season for Tyler Hansbrough fans. Since the end of January, he has only appeared in nine games. In only three of those games has he played so much as five minutes. The main consolation is that the team has been winning, especially since the brief return of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist--with whom Tyler played very well--and the later addition of Courtney Lee, to shore up the team's suspect defense. I have been at a loss to explain why, after such a fantastic season with the Toronto Raptors, when he started two playoff games, Tyler has been consigned to the very end of the bench, starting with pre-season. The best explanation I can come up with is that this was a front office signing, not one requested by the head coach.

He has rarely appeared comfortable in Charlotte, which is fully understandable given the lack of playing time. Hansbrough is a rhythm player rarely given the chance to get in a rhythm. He is a power forward once again made to play against larger players at center, simply because he is so strong, whereas Kaminsky, Zeller, and Hawes are relatively weak. I think the main considerations have been tactical: the "four-out" offense that Coach Clifford runs requires only one under-the-basket player. At this point, Zeller has claimed the starting center position, and has been highly effective. It's good to see him come through. Al Jefferson, since his return, has helped the team go on a win streak. That leaves Tyler as the odd man out at center. Likewise, Hansbrough is a great offensive rebounder, but an average defensive rebounder. Coach Clifford does not value offensive rebounds, only defensive rebounds. I have not seen any arguments that support the position that the latter are more valuable, but that is the head coach's tactical stance. Once again, Tyler is the odd man out. Finally, I have pointed out in the game threads the many situations where Hansbrough could contribute when the team is struggling, but he never gets the call.

I can easily see Hansbrough staying in Charlotte another year, simply because it is such a luxury to have a veteran, dependable, hard-working teammate ready to go at a moment's notice. But his quest to find playing time on a contender has failed in Charlotte. It's fun watching the Hornets go on a winning tear, but strange not to see Tyler Hansbrough right in the thick of things. I watch him shooting in warmups--he hits just about everything. The leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference history still can shoot, and he leads the team in rebounds per 36 minutes and RB%. If called upon, he will once again be ready. That call seems a long ways away right now.

Wait, so Psycho and Biz just switched places.

I guess he's leaving his mark by playing with Frank in practice. Frank's gotten tougher and moves a bit like Psycho now.

I feel like euphorbus' paragraph to Hansbroughs PT ratio is incredibly high

In 2016 he's a center. If you weigh 250, like to bang and have a paint oriented game more likely than not you'll play center in today's NBA.

Nice to see Tyler get some burn and hit some shots tonight, even if the undaunted effort by the bench team came up short. He looked good out there, in control and helping his teammates. He can be a very valuable player if used right.

Cliff is so rigid in his rotation....

We could definitely use Hans' toughness vs Cleveland yesterday.

Most days, actually. And a lot of games where the team comes out flat, Hornets fans are just begging for some instant energy off the bench, preferably by the end of the first quarter.

Hansbrough has been overplaying the trap lately, but if the coaches tell him, "Stay with your man," that is what he will do.
