Gianni Infantino elected as FIFA's ninth president

We finally have a new FIFA president.

On Friday morning Gianni Infantino was voted the new FIFA president by the FIFA Congress. The UEFA General Secretary took home 115 votes in the second round of voting. A total of 104 votes were needed to win the election during the second round of voting.

The 45-year-old Swiss football administrator has been UEFA's General Secretary since 2009, serving under Michel Platini, who was UEFA's President until he was banned from the sport in December. The length of that ban was recently reduced from eight years to six years after an appeal.

Infantino oversaw the expansion of the European Championship to 24 teams and currently serves on FIFA's Reform Committee alongside Canada Soccer Association president Victor Montagliani.

Infantino, who earned the Canadian Soccer Association's vote, took home 88 of the 207 votes during the first round of voting, edging out Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa by three votes. Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, US Soccer's pre-election choice, finished third with 27 votes while Jerome Champagne finished with seven votes.

The second round of voting was necessary since no candidate reached the 138-vote threshold for election during the first round.

Earlier in the day, sweeping reforms were also approved by the FIFA Congress, including greater transparency and term limits.

FIFA approves sweeping reforms, including greater transparency & term limits

FIFA, soccer's world governing body, announced the approval of sweeping reforms on Friday during the organization's Extraordinary FIFA Congress in Zurich. Highlights of the reforms include increased transparency, term limits, and accelerating the growth of women's soccer.

The reforms come in the wake of a year of scandals, criminal indictments, and reprimands and suspensions for multiple executives, including the removal of longtime FIFA President Sepp Blatter. The election for the new president is taking place on Friday in Zurich as part of the Extraordinary Congress.

“We stand united in our determination to put things right, so that the focus can return to football once again,” said Acting FIFA President Issa Hayatou. “The hard work of restoring trust and improving how we work begins now.”

“This will create a system of stronger governance and greater diversity that will give football a strong foundation on which to thrive. It will help to restore trust in our organization. And it will deter future wrongdoing.”

The reform package was approved by a vote of 179 to 22.

Here is a summary of the approved reforms (courtesy of FIFA.com):

Clear separation between “political” and management functions: The FIFA Council (replacing the FIFA Executive Committee) is responsible for setting the organisation’s overall strategic direction, while the General Secretariat oversees the operational and commercial actions required to effectively execute that strategy.
Term limits for the FIFA President, FIFA Council members and members of the Audit and Compliance Committee and of the judicial bodies (max. 12 years).
Election of Council members supervised by FIFA and in accordance with FIFA’s own electoral regulations; all candidates subject to comprehensive eligibility and integrity checks conducted by an independent FIFA Review Committee.
Greater recognition and promotion of women in football with a minimum of one female representative elected as a Council member per confederation; promotion of women as an explicit statutory objective of FIFA to create a more diverse decision-making environment and culture.
Disclosure of individual compensation on an annual basis of the FIFA President, all FIFA Council members, the Secretary General and relevant chairpersons of independent standing and judicial committees.
Enhanced control of money flows.
Universal good governance principles for confederations and member associations.
FIFA’s commitment to human rights to be enshrined in the FIFA Statutes.
New Football Stakeholder Committee to ensure greater transparency and inclusion through broader stakeholder representation (including players, clubs and leagues).

Thought this may be a good idea for a thread. A place to discuss the business of FIFA and their ultimate corruption.

FIFA avoids further disgrace with Sheikh Salman's defeat

FIFA named Gianni Infantino its ninth president Friday, dodging a bullet by not electing Asian Football Confederation chief Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa.

Widely considered a favourite alongside Infantino to replace the embattled Sepp Blatter, Salman's defeat came as a surprise after the first round of voting handed the Swiss-Italian UEFA general secretary a narrow three-vote advantage when many expected greater returns for the AFC boss.

Renowned for antiquated and primitive perspectives on social and political demonstrations and causes, Salman's defeat is a triumph for FIFA.

Though he denies allegations of his involvement in the torture of his people, Salman's legacy is invariably sullied by such claims.

Bahraini royalty and a despot with a vice grip on social movements in the tiny Middle Eastern state, Salman has a dubious record of human rights violations during a time when FIFA is desperate to atone for decades of corruption.

Salman vowed to force reforms to modify FIFA's tarnished image short on transparency and due process, though as the election approached, that pledge began to emit a noxious bouquet. His campaign discredited Infantino's financial proposals while promising to make FIFA a more candid and consolidated entity.

But it's hard not to castigate Salman for his proposals when the threat of superannuated suspicions loomed large over his candidacy.A letter addressed to Blatter in 2013 from the Bahrain Center for Human Rights urged the then-FIFA chief to reconsider nominating Salman for the Asian Football Confederation chairman position.

"Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa is involved in human rights violations with the assistance of his office and consultants against players, administrators, referees, and clubs who participated in the democracy protests in February 2011," the report stated.

"We would like to bring to your kind attention the most important acts of revenge carried out by Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa against groups that are affiliated with football."

At an April 2011 meeting with the Bahraini Football Association, Salman pledged to discredit and punish anyone involved in peaceful pro-democracy protests.

Unfortunately for a group of footballers, referees, administrators, and members of the BFA, Salman is a man of his word, allegedly orchestrating instances of detainment and torture.

Its hard to adopt anything but a wait and see approach with FIFA's history.

I don't think any of them was the right man. Infantino is a pawn, but World Cups will start going to the West again and everyone will be happy.

I used a dictionary to find the word pawn so I dunno if it makes sense. :D

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and pawn is correct in that context.

It's a case of lesser evils for now, we'll just have to see what he does. His plans for World Cup expansion and dumping in extra cash for the associations leaves a somewhat sour taste in the mouth, but I think that at the very least, he appears to be a football man and not a politician.

FIFA Corruption Discussion Thread

Post#9 » by Ted Lasso » Tue Mar 22, 2016 1:54 pm

I didn't know where else to put this link but it may be good to have a thread on this topic regardless.

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/12023/10214928/franz-beckenbauer-and-five-others-under-investigation-by-fifa-over-germany-2006-world-cup-bid

My guess is this is an operation to clear their names similar to Blatter's regime's World Cup bid "investigations," but let's see what happens.

Lol, I was tempted to make a joke in the OP about Ozzy burying this into obscurity but I figured I shouldn't assume the worst. :D

God forbid we should have a specific discussion thread about a topical issue that may produce some nice debate around here.

How am I burying it? I'm simply putting it in the correct thread. It's FIFA news, it goes in the FIFA news thread.
