Marc Stein's Trimester AwardsDefensive Player of the Second Trimester: Hassan Whiteside, HEATMarc Stein | ESPN

Instinct tells me that the real-life DPOY balloting in mid-April after the regular season ends is going to be dominated by a familiar duo: San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard and Golden State's Draymond Green.
They're the top two individuals on the NBA map when it comes to two-way players... and they occupied the top two spots in last year's DPOY voting in a ridiculously close race in which Green actually collected more first-place votes but slipped to runner-up status because he appeared on fewer overall ballots.
However...
If we're really going to laser in on the middle third of the season exclusively, which is most certainty what the Trimester concept was founded upon, Miami's Hassan Whiteside has the strongest case to get the nod here.
It's not so much because Whiteside, entering the springtime stretch run, is the NBA's runaway leader in blocked shots per game this season at 3.85.
It has far more to do with the dramatic turnaround for Miami defensively in 2016 with Whiteside anchoring the D.
Through December, you'll recall, Miami's defense was actually better with Whiteside on the bench than on the floor, allowing 94.5 points per 100 possessions when he was sitting compared to 102.8 points per 100 possessions when he was playing.
But the Heat's resistance as a team has done a dramatic 180 since the calendar flipped to a new year. Entering Wednesday night's big South Beach showdown with Golden State, Miami was allowing 104.2 points per 100 possessions since Jan. 1 with Whiteside spectacting... compared to an ultra-stingy 96.0 points per 100 possessions with Whiteside on the floor.
It's a U-turn that had to be recognized and rewarded while we have the opportunity, knowing that Leonard and/or Green will be so tough to top six weeks from now.
