Sign Edwin.... let Bautista go
Edwin Encarnacion just said he wants to retire a Blue Jay. He is willing to negotiate and does not have a specific number he is demanding. He does not have the show man personality that Bautista does but he is just as solid a hitter.
He is injury prone. Yes. But last season with so much time missed due to injury or playing in discomfort due to injury, he still managed 39 Homers..... if healthy he would of been better than Jose. He is also younger by almost 3 years.
he is cheaper than Bautista too, or at least from what Jose is demanding, reportedly. Not dirt cheap, don't get me wrong. He will demand a heavy number. But he is an elite slugger, so someone is gonna pay.
Jays should at least sign one of these guys. Edwin seems more reasonable and underrated.

We don't need either of them, but it'd be nice to keep Edwin around. He should be a lot cheaper since there's no pretense about him being a viable fielder. It also kinda helps that he hasn't come out publicly about refusing to negotiate an extension. And he's had a few nagging injuries but overall, has been pretty healthy. It felt like his hand was bothering him half the season but he still played 146 games last year.

I love Bautista, but EE is really classy by contrast.

If they're going to sign one of them, it will almost certainly be Edwin. Not banking on either one, though.

Or we let both go. Which is probably going to happen. AA would not re-sign either if he was still here

Re: Sign Edwin.... let Bautista go
EE has been a remarkably consistent player the last four years, over which time his OPS has ranged from .901 to .941.
A five-year contract is likely what it will take to keep him around, and that would see him through to his age 38 season. His history of nagging injuries, the fact he's mostly a DH, and the fact he wants to be here could lower his payday. 5 years $100M? I'd do that. Anything more and the decision gets tougher.

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

5/100 for a DH? I don't think it would take quite that term. I'd be fine at 4/80 though.

Even better. Hopefully it doesn't come to a 5th year, but if push came to shove I'd do it. Not sure Shapiro would, though.
It depends on whether Shapiro wants to go full rebuild or try to retool on the fly. The team's performance this year - especially the young guys like Sanchez, Osuna, Hutch, Pillar, Pompey, Travis - will have a large bearing on that decision. Keeping EE would give us a solid heart of the order of Donaldson-EE-Tulo for 2017-2018.

Bautista is a better player and a better bet going forward of producing into his aging years, but if you're going to keep one of them for DH you definitely go with Edwin, even with his injury history and all. He'll definitely come cheaper.

Without knowing what type of contract Edwin will agree too how can you possibly make these statements? The money is everything in determining if we're bringing back these players.
Now if Edwin asks for $100 million+ you could very well be right but he is saying all the right things about retiring a Blue Jay. Unlike the other guy.

Keep both and raise the payroll... $137M is mid of the pack these days.
Anyways, i'll say both are gone by next season.

According to Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun, Edwin Encarnacion would likely accept three years and under $60 million US with a club option for a fourth year from the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jose Bautista has paved the way for the Blue Jays to sign his friend, Edwin Encarnacion. Bautista, the man who won’t negotiate on anything but his public image, won’t get signed in Toronto at five years at $150 million or whatever inflated figure he is looking for. Meantime, Encarnacion, I’m told, will likely accept three years and under $60 million US with a club option for a fourth year. Victor Martinez signed a four-year, $68-million deal in Detroit. David Ortiz, whose contract is based on plate appearances, will probably earn $15 million for his last season in Boston. Those comparables makes sense if not dollars for the Jays ...

It's Simmons so there's definitely no basis in fact. Plus you'd have to think if they could sign him for 3 years and less than 60 it would have been done by now already. That would be a great deal.

Comparable to the Nelson Cruz signing, it's very possible.

Yeah that's a no brainer, and if the last year is the start of the decline with the option, you just let him go or renegotiate another deal depending on where his production stands.
That simply sounds way too good to be true.

Re: Sign Edwin.... let Bautista go
It sounds way too good to be true due to the false balance of Bautista's demand. We have media arguing on either side of the case (not a lot on Jose's side, but Jaffe's article is one example) as if it's actually a question if it's reasonable or not. As opposed to the degree of absurdity. 3 years at $60M (which could be a number picked out of the air for all we know) is actually about what Edwin is worth; it might even be more than he's worth for 2017/18/19 if you assume he's currently a 3.5 WAR player. The team option balances it out.

Re: Sign Edwin.... let Bautista go
Jose Bautista just accused the Jays management of leaking his contract demands. Things might get ugly in season.... i have had enough.
Trade Bautista. Jays have the depth to survive without him, not to mention Jays would get a decent player in return to take his place.
