What do we have here?

Post#1 » by JasonBlanchard » Mon Feb 29, 2016 12:23 am

Long term, I don't think we have a ton of talent. Missed on a few things IMO. Just my opinion of course. Hoping to land a big FA, and for some of this young talent to pan out.

Elfrid- Took a big step back this season. Shoots more than I'd like, and plays lethargic at times. He may end up panning out, but I tend to see him as a marginal starter, or solid back up

Oladipo- Probably my biggest disappointment. He got compared to Wade coming out, and I bought into it. Every season I expect him to come out and blow up. Yet to happen. Good news is, he has a lot of heart, and a high motor. So there is still hope here. Just hope something clicks soon

Gordon- Super athletic. I do not think he will ever be a superstar, but I do think he can be a very good starter, and probably not an area of concern.

Vucevic- Very good scorer for his size and position. Great touch. Very weak defender. Really wish he would be more aggressive, and add some muscle or weight, as he is not a force on defense.

Hezonja- Honestly the most upside IMO. I think as he sees more minutes, and settles down, he will be a very good scorer. Maybe not a superstar, but I do think he could end up being a star in this league. Someone who scores 20ppg.

Fournier- Still the biggest ? for me. Talented, just super inconsistent

I think this team has a lot of talent, just not superstar talent. That term is so overused. There's maybe 10 superstars in the entire NBA, and probably less. Vucevic is an all star caliber center, he's our best player. Oladipo and Gordon both have star potential. I think Dipo's heading for a John Starks level career. An all star a time or two maybe but will be a tough defender and moderate scorer.

Payton is never going to be a star, he's a solid starter at best if he can get an average jump shot. His impact can come on defense and setting up his teammates, but Penny Hardaway he isn't. At this point Jameer Nelson in his prime will still be a better player.

Fournier isn't a star and won't be. He looks for his shot too much rather that helping his team. He's a good, solid starter who's got some clutch tendancies, but I think he is what he is at this point.

Hezonja has a chance to be really good if the Magic prioritize getting him court time. In 2 years he's the best offensive player we have of our current core group.

Really good post Max Power.

You're right Magic Johnny. Posts that discuss the Orlando Magic roster, on an Orlando Magic forum aggravate me too. I'm gonna go sign up for a roller derby forum to discuss our roster. My apologies

I know we have an exciting young nucleus in elf vo mario ag and vuc.

I know were going to play exciting basketball for years and years to come and take a large step forward next year.

We have more up and coming talent then most teams below .500 and should be able to build team chemistry. We also have a great gm who should be able to retain our nucleus maintain flexibility to add some tier A or B vets to help accelerate our teams progression.

Sorry if Im not as pessimistic as some. I guess its just a combination of watching enough games, having a vision for the team, and being a realist.

Despite coming against the 76ers, a night like tonight makes you appreciate all of our young talent. They all showed what they are capable of. Vuc super efficient down low. Oladipo making plays on both ends. Hezonja hitting shots and creating off the dribble. Elf penetrating and creating offense. Aaron Gordon was the most impressive..doing everything in every facet of the game that we want to see. He was effective on the break...effective in a half court set driving to the hoop and knocking down open threes...effective on the offensive and defensive boards...effective 1 on 1 defense...got to to the line and made them...I was VERY impressed with AG tonight.

I don't think you'll get a clear picture of what we have until after next season or maybe even the next. (IMO)... Players are still considerably young/inconsistently. Even though i personally bust some of the guys balls from time to time. The majority of the guys deserve 1-2 more seasons before we completely write them off. I mean its not like anyone besides Vucevic is hitting the prime of their careers soon.

I'm just glad to see it in its own thread. Too bad there wasn't another, existing thread or five that already contains the same information, discussions, topics, or thoughts. If only...

Honestly I like this line up:

Payton
Vic
Hezonja
Gordon
Vuc

With Evan coming off the bench.

It all to me depends on if Mario and Aaron become the stars. If they reach their full potential and become studs we are going be looking pretty damn good IMO. Plus they are going be really exciting to watch.

It would be great if Vic and Vuc can somehow become all-stars next year for a couple years which then leads into Hezonja and AG becoming ones after them. I don't think they will get enough time however. If they don't win next year before the trade deadline and look like a playoff team probably going be sending some of these guys somewhere. My hope is we can look like a top 6 team next year and give these guys the time they need. It's a lot more fun to watch a team you have pretty much fully drafted grow and win.
The hero Orlando deserves is out there somewhere, Dwight was not the one we needed. So we will hunt for him...

elfrid was fine until he injured his feet
then the magic instead of letting him get better, allowed him to play and made it worse
he has started to regain some of that form lately

mario=work in progress, not a fan of what skiles has done with his short leash.

dipo and gordon can be building blocks because of how they defend. i know dipo got blitzed by curry but most nights he does a good job
aol4532 on bill russell
I think if you put McGee back then, he would get those blocks just as easily as Russell did. Russell's athleticism was well ahead of the players of his time, and that's about it.

Elf took step back because Skiles offense doesn't help PG who can't shoot. Basically he took everything from him in offense. We don't run almost pick and roll at all, and that's by far most dangerous offensive play for any PG in the league. You can see struggle from Jennings because of that too (and Watson ).

Gordon is just a freak, if he improves other parts of a game watch out.

Vuc is great on offense but really troublesome on D. To be honest he gets overexposed because our guards don't stop penetration as much as they shoud.

Hezonja will be great when he learns how to contorl pace in penetration, little 2 steps, change of pace and pump fake will open whole another dimension on offense for him.

For Dipo is shame that he didn't have Skiles in first year ( and i don't like Skiles at all), he developed soo much bad habits in rookie year where he could do whatever he wanted. His shot selection is soooo bad.

Fournier is not bad but don't see him improving much from here, too slow for SG, too small for SF , if he wants to be Ginobili type of dude from bench he can be awesome.

Like we were supposed to do this season? Gotcha

This season has been a colossal failure and people need to take their heads out of the sand if they think otherwise.

To add, with the youth we fans should expect a slower adaptation to the new coach.

Of course the Magic guards show stat-declines: they are actually being coached now!
