Summary of Preliminary Episode with Items I Recall (UPDATED)

Post#4 » by Ranma » Thu Jan 28, 2016 11:29 am

  • Redick credits Stan Van Gundy as a coach for preparing him to be ready to play in the NBA. Very high praise for a guy who also played for Mike Krzyzewski. He goes on to mention how playing for good teams reinforces his professional tendencies forcing him to be ready sooner as opposed to playing through bad habits on bad teams.
  • After seeking him out for advice, J.J. also credits Steve Nash for making him realize the importance of practicing doing things at high speed and intensity over more repetitions at a slower pace. Nash was the exception where he became superstar or MVP-caliber player after turning 30 rather than before. Redick also mentions how Nash incorporates so much such as diet and nutrition as well as practice that allowed for his longevity.
  • Praises the training staff and the convenience of having access to top health experts in close proximity in Los Angeles to allow him to do what he needs to do.
  • His preparation is a year-round affair where he incorporates massages, muscle activation, running, blood circulation, drills, etc.
  • Redick provides some insight into how fully committed Dwight Howard was during his 1st 4 years in Orlando before he became flighty and wishy-washy his free-agent year. D12 was prepared to go to the Nets but that never came and J.J. suspects possible resentment, but ambush press conference with Stan Van Gundy seemed to be the end of the Magic's chances as contenders. Wojnarowski points out how grass is not always greener in bigger markets if you already have good thing going in smaller one, which prompts J.J. to say whether big or small market doesn't matter as much as it used to in this day and age for endorsement opportunities or recognition. If you win, those things tend to take care of themselves. However, Redick does feel a small market insulates players more when things are going badly, whereas spotlight of scrutiny can be more focused in big market with national writers more focused there.
  • J.J. doesn't think he can continue to play the way he does past the age of 36 given the amount of work he puts in to maintain his body and skills.
  • Wojnarowski mentions that an NBA GM thinks Clippers have a Big 4 with Redick as opposed to just Big 3.
  • Wojnarowski also says Redick has a lot of good ideas for his regular podcasts, but tried to talk him out of it given the work required and didn't want that to affect his routine, especially with the great year he is having.
  • Wojnarowksi and Chris Mannix bring up the question of Blake Griffin's maturity in light of the punching incident.

Edit: I forgot to mention that J.J. adopted mindset that "You're always becoming." after initial struggle to adjust to NBA. He acknowledged mistake of thinking he's arrived after coming from Duke and into the NBA. He goes on to say that no matter how talented you are, you'll have to put in the work to succeed in the NBA. The greatest players in the league work the hardest.

Kyle Korver of the Atlanta Hawks, one of the best shooters in the NBA, joins JJ Redick for a fascinating conversation on what it takes to be one of the planets best shooters. Korver and Redick -- two of the best three-point shooters in recent NBA history -- exchange thoughts on shooting styles, practicing the craft and, yes, how it came that both of them named their sons Knox. In the weekly 4 on 4 segment, Redick and Korver rate the most underrated shooters in league history. (Yes, a Curry did make the list.)

I enjoyed the talk with Korver. Really funny that they both ended up naming their sons Knox, and it would be hillarious if they both become NBA level players and we have Knox Redick and Knox Korver in the NBA together.
