Strategic situation:

Click to see a study of our playoff race over the next two weeks and 2 days (until Saturday, Mar 19.)

Spoiler:
This time I’ve removed the Cavaliers & Raptors who are separated from our pack. The most we can likely aspire is 3rd place (owned by the Celtics). I’ve also left out the Pistons, Bulls, and Wizards for now, because the first two have slightly faded and the Wizards are still at only 0.500 (we’re 8 above 0.500). That doesn’t mean I don’t think any of these can be ignored, but over the next two weeks, we should focus primarily on catching the Celtics, and worry about the Hornets, Hawks, & Pacers trying to close the gap with us. The good news is that Charlotte is the most dangerous (because of their easy home schedule) and we actually play them, so we can stop them from passing us.

If we are in 3rd place by the end of this run, it’s an enormous victory. If we are in 4th place, we should still be very happy. Let’s take a closer look.

Celtics (37-25, home: 21-10, away: 16-15). (10 home games, 10 road games)

Game 63. Fri, Mar 4: Knickerbockers (@Boston) Boston favored (-12.5)
Game 64. Sat, Mar 5: Cavaliers (@Cleveland) Cleveland favored (+5.5)
Game 65. Wed, Mar 9: Grizzlies (@Boston) Boston favored (-5.5)
Game 66. Fri, Mar 11: Rockets (@Boston) Boston favored (-6.5)
Game 67. Tue, Mar 15: Pacers (@Indianapolis) Boston favored (-0.5)
Game 68. Wed, Mar 16: Thunder (@Boston) Boston favored (-0.5)
Game 69. Fri, Mar 18: Raptors (@Toronto) Toronto favored (+2)

Celtics have a back to back with the first leg an easy game against the Knicks followed by an away match with the Cavaliers on Saturday. This will probably be their hardest game for the next couple weeks. They are on a long winning streak at home and are finding no difficulty getting wins in the Garden. They’re solid on the road too. Next weeks home stand includes a Grizzlies team that is playing well despite the loss of Marc Gasol. The Rockets are clinging to hopes to get into the playoffs and should play hard. Their next three games are also tough.

Heat (35-26, home: 20-12, away: 15-14) (9 home games, 12 road games)

Game 62. Fri, March 4: 76ers (@Philadelphia) Miami favored (-6.5)
Game 63. Sun, March 6: 76ers (@Miami) Miami favored (-14.5)
Game 64. Wed, March 9: Bucks (@Milwaukee) Pick
Game 65. Fri, March 11: Bulls (@Chicago) (-1)
Game 66. Sat, March 12: Raptors (@Toronto) Toronto favored (+7.5)
Game 67. Mon, Mar 14: Nuggets (@Miami) (-8)
Game 68. Thu, Mar 17: Hornets (@Miami) (-5)
Game 69. Sat, Mar 19: Cavaliers (@Miami) (-0.5)

The Heat have some easier opponents, including this match with the 76ers and the return game on Sunday. Next week we go on a short, but tough road trip to the Midwest and Toronto. That’s a back to back between the Bulls and Raptors, preceded by a game with the Bucks, and we know how hard it is to beat them. Back in Miami we have a game with the Nuggets (without Danilo), a game against the Hornets (we catch them on the second night of a back to back but they have Kemba), and finally the Cavaliers. The Cavs play in Orlando the night before, so with any luck they will have more fatigue. Once we finish with the Cavs our schedule doesn’t get any easier, so we will have to squeeze many victories out of this stretch.

Hawks: (33-28, home: 19-12, away: 14-16) (10 home games, 11 road games)

Game 62. Fri, Mar 4: Lakers (@Los Angeles) Atlanta favored (-6)
Game 63. Sat, Mar 5: Clippers (@Los Angeles) LAC favored (+9.5)
Game 64. Tue, Mar 8: Jazz (@Utah) Utah favored (+3)
Game 65. Thu, Mar 10: Raptors (@Toronto) Toronto favored (+7)
Game 66. Sat, Mar 12: Grizzlies (@Atlanta) Atlanta favored (-4.5)
Game 67. Sun, Mar 13: Pacers (@Atlanta) Atlanta favored (-4.5)
Game 68. Wed, Mar 16: Pistons (@Detroit) Detroit favored (+3)
Game 69. Thu, Mar 17: Nuggets (@Atlanta) Atlanta favored (-6)
Game 70. Sat, Mar 19: Rockets (@Atlanta) Atlanta favored (-5.5)

I think the Hawks will have a hard time keeping pace. Over the next 9 games they play only 4 at home, and they have a losing road record. They should be the Lakers, but I don’t see another easy road game. At home they should do pretty well though. In any case, we should be able to open up some space on the Hawks.

Hornets (32-28, home: 20-9, away: 12-19) (12 home games, 10 road games)

Game 61. Fri, Mar 4: Pacers (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-5)
Game 62. Mon, Mar 7: Wolves (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-10.5)
Game 63. Wed, Mar 9: Pelicans (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-6)
Game 64. Fri, Mar 11: Pistons (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-5)
Game 65. Sat, Mar 12: Rockets (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-4.5)
Game 66. Mon, Mar 14: Mavs (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-5)
Game 67. Wed, Mar 16: Magic (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-9)
Game 68. Thu, Mar 17: Heat (@Miami) Miami favored (+5)
Game 69. Sat, Mar 19: Nuggets (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (-8)

The Hornets are going to benefit with a lot of home games, some against teams that are not doing very well. Note their one road game is with us, the night after playing the Magic. Still, we should expect that the Hornets will likely pass the Hawks in this stretch, but the flip side of this is coming. After this stretch of 9 games, 8 home - they are merciless at home - and 1 away, the Hornets get to finish the season with 3 home games and 9 road games. Pretty tough.

Pacers (32-29, 18-11 home, 14-18 away) (12 home games, 9 away games)

Game 62. Fri, Mar 4: Hornets (@Charlotte) Charlotte favored (+5)
Game 63. Sat, Mar 5: Wizards (@Washington) Washington favored (+3.5)
Game 64. Mon, Mar 7: Spurs (@Indianapolis) Spurs favored (+6.5)
Game 65. Sat, Mar 12: Mavs (@Dallas) Dallas favored (+4)
Game 66. Sun, Mar 13: Hawks (@Atlanta) Hawks favored (+4.5)
Game 67. Tue, Mar 15: Celtics (@Indianapolis) Celtics favored (+0.5)
Game 68. Thu, Mar 17: Raptors (@Indianapolis) Raptors favored (+0.5)
Game 69. Sat, Mar 19: Thunder (@Indianapolis) (PK)

I don’t think the Pacers are going to make much headway over this stretch of 8 games. They don’t have long road trips remaining but every team in this series is 0.500 or above. They have two back to backs as well. Their schedule does get softer after these games, but it will take a lot of discipline to stay in the top places of the standings in the meantime.

Let’s Talk About the 76ers

Spoiler:

First we have some intangibles with them and we saw it play out when they passed by a $1.6M paycheck (letting Udrih clear waivers), so that the Heat could not add reinforcements. People like Ethan Skolnick who posted that Pat Riley would use his relationship with Colangelo to get this done - twisting his arm until he took the money (?) - likely forgot that the 76ers own our draft pick this year and it’s getting less valuable.

We are currently ranked 9th in the NBA (22nd on Tankathon: http://www.tankathon.com/). Assuming that without adding reinforcements we could slip to 19th (new injuries whatever), but with reinforcements we might reach 24th, what would be the difference in the player drafted, using historical data.

http://www.82games.com/barzilai1.htm

(0.36/0.27) = about 33% better.

To put this in perspective let’s look at the last few drafts:

2010: Damion Jones (24th), Avery Bradley (19th)
2011: Reggie Jackson (24th), Tobias Harris (19th)
2012: Jared Cunningham (24th), Andrew Nicholson (19th)
2013: Tim Hardaway, Jr (24th), Sergey Karasev (19th)
2014: Shabazz Napier (24th), Gary Harris (19th)
2015: Tyus Jones (24th), Jerian Grant (19th)

Another study approaches the problem from expected career win shares:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/blog/?p=2740

In this case an average 19th pick has 21.5 win shares, while an average 24th pick has 17.2.

Honestly, I think the 76ers should have taken the $1.6M, but they are rolling in loot anyhow, so…

Here is our historical record with 76ers:

Heat 54-53 76ers (regular season), Playoff: Heat 4, 76ers 1

33-21 (in Miami)
21-32 (in Philadelphia)

Get this win. I feel like we always have trouble with them. Hoping for another blowout.

I actually always feel nervous playing this team because you do not want to be the team that loses to this d league collection.

There is no advantage winning and just the prospect of having an off game and being subject to deep, deep shame.

Let's Joe. Let's have fun.

Philadelphia 76ers Starters
PG) Ish Smith
SG) Isaiah Canaan
SF) Robert Covington
PF) Jerami Grant
C) Nerlens Noel

The lineup you posted has started the last two games because of Okafor's shin injury. One interesting thing about this lineup is their propensity to chuck 3 point attempts:

vs Charlotte (33 of 85 field goal attempts from 3 points = 38.8%) (13/33 = 39.4%) (18 for 26 from FT)
vs Washington (32 of 89 field goal attempts from 3 points = 35.9%) (10/32 = 31.3%) (12 for 21 from FT)

The previous 3 games the normal starters played: Covington, Okafor, Noel, Smith, Stauskas

vs Orlando (22 of 77 field goal attempts from 3 points = 28.6%) (5/22 for 22.7%) (29 for 37 from FT)
vs Washington (25 of 82 field goal attempts from 3 points = 30.5%) (8 for 25 for 32%) (16 for 21 from FT)
vs Detroit (23 for 83 field goal attempts from 3 points = 27.7%) (7/23 for 30.4%) (18 for 26 from FT)

See? A much lower number of 3 point attempts. If Okafor plays they will shoot fewer 3s. Otherwise, it's long-range shooting season.

It's always harder for the better team in these situations. The 76ers are already eliminated. They cannot care much about winning because it only helps the Lakers and Suns potentially improve their pick. The Lakers pick is top 3 protected or it belongs to the 76ers, so it's a double whammy. On the other hand, winning against the Heat improves their pick (as I showed in my other post.) I doubt if they are up to the task though. In the beginning of the season they actually should have been winning some games. Lately, it's been ugly though.
