POLL: Which realistic FAs do you expect us to sign this summer?

Post#1 » by The_Watcher » Mon Mar 7, 2016 9:05 pm

- You have the option to choose TWO (2) players. This poll only allows me to post 10 choices.
- I only used Hoopshype's Top 20 Free Agents that we can REALISTICALLY have a shot at.
- If you vote, ALSO indicate whether or not you would like for us to re-sign Evan Fournier.

Hoopshype FA list, summer 2016
http://hoopshype.com/2016/03/05/nba-free-agency-2016-the-top-players/

Guards (Hoopshype ranking)

Demar Derozan(4)
Mike Conley (10)
Jordan Clarkson (20)

Forwards (Hoopshype ranking):

Al Horford (6)
Harrison Barnes (12)
Chandler Parsons (13)
Nicolas Batum (17)

Centers (Hoopshype ranking):

Dwight Coward (8)
Hassan Whiteside (11)
Al Jefferson (18)

- I chose Mike Conley and Chandler Parsons. I would like us to re-sign Fournier

Rationale:
- Legitimate experienced lead guard that can do a little of everything (Conley) on both ends of the floor.
- Legitimate experienced, tall, point-forward player who can score a bit and facilitate the ball (Parsons).

Derozen and Whiteside. Resign Evan at lowcost and offer vic an extension

yeah I would make calls to first Whiteside and then too Parsons(the two I voted for), Conley and Derozan. I think getting Whiteside would be great as it allows us more flexibility for the other four spots as we don't neccesarily have to get a very good defensive PF and could even let Gordon play the 4 spot. We also need shooting and Parsons can do that. Conley would give us a very legitimate PG who is still young and would mean we could trade Payton which could net us something good. Derozan would be the elite scorer this team is lacking as well but we would still need more shooters especially if Payton remains as our PG. Barnes maybe but unless Golden State pursues a big time free agent or two medium level ones he likely gets matched. I am not big on Horford as he isn't getting any younger and a pairing of him and Vuc wouldn't be very good for the defense. If we get Whiteside then Horford makes some sense but I would pursue the other younger guys before him. Clarkson would be an ok get if the price is right. If we miss out on the younger guys I would rather just wait for 2017 and not invest to much cap space in long deals to aging vets like Jefferson who don't make us that much better and could be more of a drain in later years of their deals. Serge Ibaka is a free agent and he may be poachable if Durant and/or Westbrook leave.

* yes I know these guys may not consider us. But we can pair two guys which could be an advantage as well as no state income tax and young talent to grow with or trade for other pieces. I don't think trying is a waste of time. I go after these guys at 12:01 and if not at least we tried. And yes while some may say we don't have a chance it is only an opinion as we are not these guys and we don't know what they will ultimately do.

Just throwing this out there, we will probably get a Hordford or Noah, but I want neither of those guys.

Surprised I'm the first to vote for Batum. He makes a lot of sense and a very reasonable target.

Good thread idea! Glad we have moved on from the Durant dream.

To me, what we need to go after this summer is some offense, leadership, and most importantly, players that WANT to play here. That is why the option of acquiring Chandler Parsons is not a bad idea. He will probably be the #1 FA that will want to play for us more than anyone else. So I will start off with this.

Chandler Parsons- Florida boy and a Gator? Already makes him ok in my book.

Pros: Parsons is a winner. He plays with heart and is a veteran to our guys at 27 y.o. He has been killing it post-ASB and having one if not the best stretch of his career. Obviously, this is the contract year and he is trying to earn that cash flow. He will give us that offense and shooting we desperately need. Its hard to beat any team when your best shooter is your starting C. CP would love the opportunity to play here and we should target him. Oh and one thing that nobody ever mentions about him is that he is a GREAT recruiter. Dwight would have never signed in Houston were it not for him and he was also a big part of getting Deandre to agree to sign with Mavs before that uturn. We need someone like that attract more talent here. CP could be just the start. He is also in the prime of his career at 27 and has many years of ball left in him. He can give us that immediate play while we continue to develop Mario until he is ready to be our full time SF. He still has alot to learn. Perfect fit if you ask me.
Cons: Glad we cleared up some cap because CP can demand max money. So is he worth it? No matter who we target, we are going to up overpaying anyways. Thats just what you do to get noticeable players to sign with small market teams. But in a world where Tristan Thompson signs a max, you cant argue that Parsons would deserve one too.
- Defense: Not an outstanding defensive SF but at this point, we have so many things to fix that I think he would provide more good then bad with the overall package. What he can offer on the offensive end and leadership on the floor will make up for that.
- What about Evan? Good concern. If we sign Parsons we pretty much let Evan walk. CP is 4 years older then Evan....but is that really a bad thing? We need to get older. Still, Evan is having a career year and could explode in another team but this is a risk that Rob has to take. I like Evan but I dont see him as our SF of the future. Anything he can do, I believe Mario will be able to do just as much and better.

Mike Conley - One of my favorite players and the second most underrated player in the league. Not a better time to go after him then now. There will be alot of teams interested in him so it will not be easy. Getting Conley does not mean we are moving from EP. If anything the exact opposite. I love EP but its evident that he has alot to learn before he is ready to be a starting PG in this league. His inability to score is what hurts the most. Its just difficult to win a game these days when your PG cant shoot. He will continue to get better off the bench and have a mentor in MC.

Pros - A true leader out there and a captain to these young guys. The man has grit, is a fighter and is one tough little dude. Remember when he came back from that facial injury last year to play in the playoffs and he wasnt anywhere near fully healed. The guy has heart and wants to win. Like CP he is in the prime of his career and still has alot of gas left in the tank.
Cons - Same with Parsons. You could make the case that he will be 29 next season and might not be worth max money but we need to add more veteran leadership on this team and stop letting it be run like daddy day care. We need to get some Ws on this team and start moving forward in that 0.500+ area and into the playoffs. Conley would be a great start.

We need rim protection next to Vooch, only player on that list that provides that is Whiteside. I'm not sure if I want him.

Lol I choose Parsons and Dwight for sh*ts and giggles because nobody choose Dwight. I do legitimately believe Dwight is starting to think he made the wrong choice in leaving Orlando. I also know him and Parsons are buddies, big reason he went to Houston because Parsons recruited him there. Both have strong ties to Orlando.

However realistically I think we just go after Parsons and if we do go after another Horford. I just don't see Horford making a lot of sense next to Vuc. He is basically an older Vuc with a tad better defense. So if we go after Horford do we get rid of Vuc or play them together?

I think our best bet is to just go after Parsons and or Barnes and save up for the loaded 2017 class.

Vic
Mario
Parsons
AG
Vuc

I really really like that lineup there. Parsons and Vic can split time at the 1 and handling the ball.

If we were to go after Dwight (which is pretty slim) would we then be shopping Vuc? Wouldn't make much sense. I do see this lineup easily making top 6 in the East though.

Vic
Fournier
Parsons
AG
Dwight.

In the end I just see us going after Parsons or Barnes. Landing Parsons and hopefully have him recruit the hell out of Westbrook next year ;)
The hero Orlando deserves is out there somewhere, Dwight was not the one we needed. So we will hunt for him...

I went with Horford and Conley. Not the sexiest players stat wise... but they make ish happen. (the president and vice president underrated nba players association... lol) Looking at our team and trying to find pieces that will fit with our up and coming players... those two are players that i can see slide right in and take the reigns as the leaders of our team. they both come from winning backgrounds both in the nba and were leaders on their respective college teams. I personally have a ton of faith in the development on mario, gordon and victor... yup and still vuc/payton. For me payton still has a bright future... just not right now but in a couple years.

a starting lineup of

Conley
Vic/Hezonja
Gordon
Horford (finally getting a chance to play at his natural position after 8 years)
Vuc

would be an amazing combination of offense and defense.... there will be a mismatch on a nightly basis and teams will have to pick their poison as they all to one degree or another can make plays for their teammates. and outside of conley and vuc... the others also can play minutes at other positions... further strengthening our rotations which would be great for playoff 8 man lineups.

Adding players who are in their prime and will still be good for the next couple years while the youth come into their own. If we rolled that team on opening night.... playoffs will definitely be in consideration and eastern conference contenders will be also a notion if the youth make the leaps i think they can.

BUT... just throw in KD a small forward annnnnnnnnd i'll be a happy camper as well! hahahaha... having a dominant player added to this current roster alone would change the lives of everyone else.

What's the obsession with Barnes? Like what do people expect him to do in a Magic uniform?

He can defend the 2-4 positions at a high level - excellent in switches (which is key to gsw defense).

He is not a #1 option or a shot creator, but a highly efficient offensive player from everywhere on the court, elite mid range and very good post up game, and obviously an elite 3pt shooter. With Mario and AG developing to be our key play makers + possibly EP he fits right in.

He is in a good age range (24) to grow with the highest peak of the core (Hezonja 21 /Gordon 20).

The potential of a deadly two-way trio of Hezonja |Barnes |Gordon is pretty darn nice.

While Parsons and Batum bring more experience and might even be better currently - the upside of Barnes with Mario and AG is much more appealing from a big picture pov. In particular Parsons will demand to be "the guy"...but he really isn't that, and I'd much rather give AG and Mario a clear path at their positions to grow into option 1 and 2.

Same goes for Parsons. I mean, I know why people like Parsons (hometown) but neither are worth our attention unless they are happy with a team friendly contract.
