We're 11-4.

It's easy to second-guess--I do it all the time here--but it was pretty obvious that Hairston had by far the worst on-court statistics among rotation players on the team. His offensive rating is 97 and his defensive rating 106. His DBPM is -.9. Hairston's performance did not justify a starting position. The coach decided to use him as a placeholder for Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who hurried back from injury. We saw how that turned out. Then Courtney Lee got plugged into the same slot, without ever having done anything to earn a rotation position on this team, much less a starter's position. I always thought that to become a starter, you had to earn the right. But not in HornetsWorld. Coach Clifford kept saying that Hairston was doing a great job on defense, but the numbers tell a different story.

I have to tell you, Lee's advanced stats are less than inspiring right now. His DefRtg is the same as Hairston's, 106. His WS/48 is .06, second-to-last, but ahead of Hairston, at .047. You know what is really surprising? Al Jefferson leads the team in DefRtg at 102. He also leads the team in defensive rebounds per 36, although Hansbrough, a great offensive rebounder, leads the team overall, as he has done nearly all season.

To start games you have to make sense with the other guys. Lee makes the most sense with the other starters. At this point I think he's getting a lot of minutes to acclimate so there is a justification for his minutes. I think it is better to close with Lin most games however, not Lee.

In order for Wiggins to make the leap, he has to find ways to impact the game outside of scoring 2s and FTs. Create for others, rebound, become a defensive stopper, make 3s etc...

He has the talent and athleticism to do all of it. It'll be really interesting to see how he develops.

I don't think he's very smart.

I think he relies on raw talent.

And raw talent will only get you so far.

I don't think Hansborough is an option at 2 guard.

<I don't think Hansborough is an option at 2 guard.>

I certainly hope not. A lot of his stats are better than Lee's, especially on defense, yet Lee was handed a starting position on a platter, while Hansbrough has only played meaningful minutes once since the end of January. There are so many situations or matchups--such as against Karl Anthony Townes--where he could contribute when the team is struggling. Yet Coach Clifford has his "rotation" set in stone. He said himself before the game that interior defense was important, yet failed to take out Zeller when he was overmatched, and put in Kaminsky, who likewise was overmatched. We almost lost the game due to Zeller's uncharacteristically poor play.

Even Troy Daniels, the best pure shooter on the team, does not come in when the shots aren't falling. Daniels can certainly play the two guard, and has worked hard to improve on defense.

Every head coach has their biases. Unlike some coaches, Cliff is not the experimenting type.

BlackOutBuzz wrote:"Lin is a winner even when he sucks" is my new favorite quote.

It is true; he plays unselfish, facilitates, plays great D on multiple positions, be clutch, hustles, rebounds, pushes the ball, runs in breaks, hits big shots, spreads the floor, feeds the post, inbounds well. When he stops sucking at his shot and taking care of the ball, watchout!

Good point. I think the larger issue has yet to surface. In the playoffs, it is crucial for the coach to adjust tactics and personnel on a game-to-game basis, and often during the game as well. That is a big reason the Raptors got bounced in the first round the last two years. Without "experimenting," that is, making maximum use of personnel and employing imaginative tactics, the Hornets will rely ever more on Kemba Walker and Al Jefferson, as in the past two years. Just wait until the other coach starts to double-team or trap Walker. The results won't be pretty.
