Basically, you've put together a list of guys who had a good year (in some cases), and then backslid. Seems a stretch to attribute the one good year to an assistant coach.

Good coaches make useful players out of unuseful players...experience than carries that player development while under that coach...he didn't have enough time with the New York guys

Who dat?

Assistant coach in Atlanta.

He's a player type one on one coach who specializes in player development...focuses on who's playing well and doesn't really worry about giving the "known" players minutes of they're being out produced by a bench guy

Did he take over for Budenholzer for a stretch of games like Newman is doing for Wittman for you to know this?

IF Atkinson actually got sustained, better performances from his players, it would make him a rare coach. The relevant research on coaching indicates that most coaches don't have a measurable effect on individual productivity. The exceptions are acknowledged greats like Phil Jackson, Popovich, Riley, and a few others. That's not to say that coaches are worthless, but rather that there's a HUGE middle ground of competent professional coaches who all do more or less the same quality of work. It'd be nice if the Wizards next coach could be one of those rare greats. If it turned out to be Atkinson, that'd be fine with me.

50% of coaching is giving players confidence and that's in all the basketball i seen and played...factual from my standpoint simply because practice makes perfect...only variable doing game time is being confident u can do it during the game...
Next is understanding they're strengths(green light them) and weakness(don't let it get taken advantage of)
Even untraditional strengths like gambling defensively, shooting whenever they feel...
Let them practice it if they do it in practice tell them do it in games
Coaching isn't hard...coaches make it hard by not being confident in guys...
Players fall off in new surroundings because of new coaches and or teammates because Sometimes the best coach isnt necessarily needed if the players have good confidence in each other, but that's rare...
With that being said he seems like that type of coach from what I've learned

And a good example of the coaches and players confidence thing
And they're both 2 years younger...look at the playoffs #s
And that's they're core

Anyone still in doubt that the Wizards will always be mediocre under Wittman?

Enough with the it's 'purely Grunfeld's fault, Wittman's doing the best he can with a questionable roster' nonsense.

Wittman's coaching philosophy has shackled this teams' potential...especially this season.

Let him go now and hopefully the chains are loosed.

Did either awizzingbullet or deneem actually *read* Kevin's post? Let me make it easier for you:

...research on coaching indicates that most coaches don't have a measurable effect on individual productivity. The exceptions are acknowledged greats like Phil Jackson, Popovich, Riley, and a few others. ... a HUGE middle ground of competent professional coaches... all do more or less the same quality of work.

The word "research" is important here. It's to be opposed to assertions like the two of you made which a) contradict research and b) tell the reader only what you blindly believe.

No one thinks Wittman is among those acknowledged greats, those very few who actually make a difference. He's just an ordinary off-the-shelf quality coach.

We don't have a good record because we don't have enough good players. Once Rasual Butler stopped playing like an all star and started playing like the marginal guy he was and is, we closed last season 27-30.

This year we are 26-30 so far. Notice any similarity in those 2 records?

No, what's the similarity? I'm not seeing it.

Oubre's DNP vs. Chicago after playing well against New Orleans was predictable yet disappointing.

Wow, man -- you really are in Ernie's pocket aren't you? I can't imagine why -- and I mean that respectfully. He's not your uncle.

I'd love to know what you like so much about him. And, honestly, I don't mean to be provocative. I'd love to know what it is makes him such a good GM in your mind -- in fact I promise not even to dispute any points you make if you'll just describe it.

It's going to be tough for Oubre to get consistent minutes with Alan Anderson back (assuming he stays healthy).

I still would play Oubre all day over Temple but that's just me

Three questions I'm pondering:

(1) Is there a chance that Randy gets fired at this point? I can't remember a coach being fired this late in the season.

(2) Is there a possibility that firing Randy would actually move the needle here, or would it be pointless?

(3) If Randy is let go, does that tell us anything about Ernie's job security?

This is interesting. Sorta surprising there isn't some website that chronicles this stuff. Latest start date for any of the current coaches was George Karl, who took the Kings job on February 17.

(2) Is there a possibility that firing Randy would actually move the needle here, or would it be pointless?

Not very likely, in my opinion. Especially if it's just one of the assistants who moves up. Wittman isn't a bad coach -- he's probably towards the bottom of a broad group of competent professional coaches.

(3) If Randy is let go, does that tell us anything about Ernie's job security?

To me, that would tell me that Grunfeld was rock solid in the job. Which I think is the case anyway.

So jelly of Boston: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/14930372/boston-celtics-coach-brad-stevens-dreams-schemes. Imagine that, a coach who can draw up plays out of a timeout and manage the clock?!

Articles like this kinda drive me nuts. I did an article on this subject for Vice earlier in the season, and I did a bunch of interviews with coaches and former coaches. Stevens is a terrific coach, but the best way of describing what he does during timeouts is CALLING plays and drawing up reminders. According to the several NBA assistants I spoke with, no one runs plays after timeouts that they haven't practiced; no one will run a play when they need a critical basket unless they've run the same play in a game before.

It's a bit weird to praise Stevens for his great after timeout plays, and then note that the team ranks 26th in ATO efficiency this season. And, the Celtics have been "not good" ATO during Stevens' tenure -- they're ranked 30th, 28th and now 26th since he got there.

That said, I'm thoroughly unconvinced this is a good barometer of coaching effectiveness. There isn't much carryover year-to-year in ATO efficiency. On average, about 8% of a team's ATO efficiency can be explained by its ATO efficiency the previous season.

I gotta believe the change takes place later next week with more losses if not by Monday.

You have to get somewhat of an idea of what your assistant coaches are capable of before heading into the offseason, right?
