Dude is going to get PAID!!! Demarre Carroll is the same age and got 4 years $15M last season.

Marvin is playing even better and at a position that can change your whole teams style of basketball.

Marvin is officially shooting over 40% from deep on the season! 120-299. Cut out that putrid December he had and he's shooting 43.4% from deep. I'm sorry I ever doubted you Marvin.

in last two games, he consistently posted up on smaller defender, scored at easy... was unstoppable...easily all star level play

Somehow it feels like we are showcasing him right now. If he keeps playing like this, his contract value will skyrocket next season and that will be hard for us to match. Do we have his bird right?

I would go with Marvin over Lin. Plenty of backup PGs out there who could do what Lin is doing right now.

So he'll get the max afterall?

His game has expanded exponentially the past few games: post ups, runners, drives, cuts, teardrops, etc. Wow!

Only Early Bird rights, not full bird rights. So that means 175% of his current salary of $7M, which is $10.5M. Early bird rights would allow the Hornets to pay him up to $10.5M.

If his market value with the increasing cap and his current play improvement means having to pay him more than $10.5M, then the Hornets can only use free cap space to do so and not the Early Bird exception.

175% is $12.25M. However, as it stands, Bird Rights will not affect too much. We're operating under the cap this summer (assuming we don't do something r-worded with Big Al) so we can offer him as much as we have under the cap. His cap hold of $9.1 will remain if we do sign someone else and leave $9.1M left over, then we can re-sign Marvin to a contract worth up to $12.25M.

Personally, I don't want to retain Marvin on a long-term deal worth that much. The guy has improved leaps and bounds in a contract year and after the Lance Stephenson fiasco, I'm understandably nervous about a guy who has had exactly one good season in the last several years. I'd be willing to pay huge for another one-year deal, or maybe even a 2 year deal, but after that, we're talking about a guy with a mediocre (and trending downwards prior to 2015-16) track record with a major injury and a lot of miles on his body (despite only being 29). I'd be terrified to throw him MKG money for 3-4 years.

Thanks for the catch. Yes, it's $12.25M.

I think with every team in the league getting a bump in cap space this summer and another second jump the following summer, everyone will be rushing to spend money. I don't think the Hornets will be the ones setting his market value. The influx of cash around the league will.

That applies to all the Hornets' free agents, not just Marv (Batum, C.Lee, Lin, Big Al, etc.). I just see no way for the team to keep everyone, especially when you already have a not large, but also not insignificant chunk of change tied down already with Hawes and Lamb on the bench.

I thought it seemed like Marv's play has dropped off a bit post-ASB. Then I ran the numbers, and I was clearly wrong.

Marv pre-ASB: 29 MPG, 10.5 points, 44.0% FG, 38.6% 3PT (4.4 3PTA per game), 86.9% FT, 57.4% TS, 6.6 boards

Marv post-ASB: 29 MPG, 14.0 pooints, 46.8% FG, 42.3% 3PT (5.3 3PTA per game), 77.1% FT, 59.6% TS, 6.8 boards

Do you really dare to jinx Marvin Gaye Williams just days before the playoffs start?
