If it's based on this year's cap, I believe his max is five years, $101 million.

If he is who I think he is going forward, that would be an amazing deal to lock him up to.

Extension contracts are based on the year the extension kicks in.

Giannis will (and should) get the 25% max of 2017-2018, with the amount not being defined until the cap is set for that year (source http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm Q #60).

Question is, what if GIannis declines extension ?
Does he become RFA next year or UFA?

max extension is a no brainer and there is no way he declines. No real need to even discuss it.

RFA

In RFA the only way that Bucks could lose him is by being unable to match a crazy contract from lets say the Lakers?

I believe the Bucks can match any offer he gets. He's not going anywhere.

You mean the salary cap doesn't matter in this case?
I see.

The only way the Bucks can lose him in RFA is if they choose to lose him. Unless he wants to go somewhere else, it's in his best interest to take the max extension now, as he can get the same contract he'd get if he went to RFA, but if he takes the QO, the cap is actually expected to decline that year and thus he'd get a smaller starting salary as a UFA.

How can he say no?

NBA's contract situation is very confusing to non-americans.
If I was Giannis I would have taken the max immediately.

Excluding all the "by heart" reasons of picking him from Greece's second division and giving him the chance of playing in NBA at age 18 as a starter etc etc he still have plenty of reasons of staying in Milwaukee.

1) It's a club on the rising thirsty for success.
2) He is/can be a franchise player which can make him easier an all star player/superstar..
3) New Arena incoming which will complete the overall restart of the club.
4) The other 2 best players will/should not go anywhere for years and thus there is no chance of disbanding the Big 3 which is essential for a title.
5) There is always a chance of a big injury which can muddle the waters of your future.(I don't want to jinx it but it's the reality and I think Giannis and his family will consider that possibility too)
