BigA wrote:Ted was interviewed on 106.7 today (Grant and Danny). The segment is available on their podcast page.
Most of the interview was about the new arena league team, with some discussion of the Caps, and some discussion of the Wizards near the end.
They did ask him the key question of what will happen if they don't make the playoffs and lose the pick:
Question: "You have shown in the past that you would relieve a GM, and it's worked with Brian MacLellan. What would lead up to a conversation, what would you need to see/hear to decide if Ernie or Randy deserve to come back?"
Answer: "We're going to make the playoffs, we have to believe that, we have to be focused on that, it's all we're looking at and tonight is a really huge game. We need to have the players, staff, organization, fans believing in that now.
This has been an outlier year, mainly because of the number of injuries we've suffered. We had a bad road trip where Beal doesn't play at all, then we have a game where he plays 24 minutes and the team looks completely different. John Wall is a different player when he doesn't have to be the number 1 offensive scoring option, he can focus more on setting other players up.
We'll take a look at how we end the season in the off season, but right now we're focused on do we have our full contingent of players? Can we play the kind of system that we want? Can we up the energy on defense?
It sounds trite, but we really are in the mode that we need to take one game at a time. And be totally focused and conscious. We played that way against Detroit. One of our best games of the season. We also had the starting 5 I thought we would have after the trade deadline. When we have that starting 5 and can bring Nene and other players off the bench, we're a pretty good team.
We only have only 15 or so games to prove it, and we need to understand what's at stake."
Many thanks to Mr. Leonsis for giving me a launching pad for my next blog post.

Oh, I forgot. Before he signed off, Ted said: "And if that Kevin Broom guy is listening, I just want to say 'ANALYTICS THIS'! HA HA HA!"

Re: The Amazingly Sucky Theodore Leonsis Thread
Oh boy. Can we just summarize the Wizards' problems in 2 words? "Roster construction."
That's about it. It's crystal friggin clear. Screw the injury whining. To hell with the game-in-game-out referee complaints (of which I'm red-faced guilty). It's talent. Talent. Talent.
Wall's good, not great. Beal is about to be painfully overpaid. Otto is the unsung, underpaid (for now) hero, along with his correctly-compensated sidekick Gortat. A little vet-discounted contributions from Sessions and Dudley help to fill in the cracks. And the end result is a Bernie Sanders-esque push for the playoffs.
Otherwise: garbage. There's no #1. There's no #1A, no #1B. Wall hardly qualifies as a #2 (not the dookey definition, aye). It's just not a roster built for high level competition. And whose responsibility is that?
Leonsis and Grunfeld. Gotta go, one of them at least.

Pathetic, he is truly Ernie Grunfeld's Stockholm prisoner (or ventriloquist dummy) Whenever Ted talks about anything Wizards, I see him sitting on Ernie's lap and Ernie talking through him. This is truly hopeless.

I don't remember Leonsis talking about all the injuries to other teams that worked in the Wizards favor last season, especially George and Bosh. If those two guys were healthy Miami and Indy would have been completely different teams.

Everyone needs to relax a little. Ted/Eg irritate the hell out of me, but what Ted just said was a whole lot of nothing. He sidestepped the questions and basically said "We are in the final stretch of the season and attempting to make the playoffs. We've had guys come back from injuries, a re-commitment to defense, and three acquisitions (Kieff, Thornton, Hickson). Lets make a run here and see if we can make some noise. The offseason is long and boring and we'll have plenty of time to revisit this topic"
What I care about are the actions he takes after the season, not the cheerleader BS he says now.

Right. Again, he isn't really saying anything so it's open to interpretation. He's using the injury excuse because that allows him to not talk about the roster construction or the coaching. We don't know if he believes it. Maybe he does. But maybe he makes changes if they fall short.

Fine to make fun of Ted here, but don't make fun of him at a game.
Actually, making fun of him at the game turned out pretty well for the fan! He's in Ted's suite next home game, and I can hear the conversation now: "Ted, this is really great -- thanks! But, you know, my attorney says I should really have my own suite. Do you think he's right?"

Way to reach for the stars, Ted.
“Never take making the playoffs for granted,” he said. “We see that with the Wizards. The Wizards, every game now is like a playoff game, because we let so many games during the regular season slip away, and you can’t make a championship unless you make the playoffs. … We set out every year saying the Mystics and the Wizards and the Caps need to make the playoffs. Well, the Mystics did their end. The Caps did their end. And now we’re focused on the Wizards.”
Way to reach for the stars, Ted.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Re: The Amazingly Sucky Theodore Leonsis Thread
Leonsis is orders of magnitude worse than Snyder at his worst. ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE. Why? Because Danny Boy at least tried to win. No matter how bad Danny was at it, no matter how clueless and megalomaniacal his management was, his goal was to win the Super Bowl. Why does that matter? Because eventually, when you want to win, and your ego gets in the way, something's got to give, and it looks like the ego gave. Enter Scot McClouhan, who has built a Super Bowl team, and a team that was very close to winning it. McClouhan is with the Redskins because DANNY WANTS TO WIN, and it took Snyder too long to realize it, but he figured out was that Scot was needed so DANNY COULD WIN.
I always felt that eventually Danny would figure it out, because unlike guys like Sterling who see their team as an ATM, Danny legitimately and truly wanted to win, he was just clueless and stubborn about how to do it.
Ted Leonsis is HOPELESS, because he doesn't care about winning. He just wants to look good in front of a pliant media, and perform just well enough to ensure he doesn't get criticized too much for his commitment to mediocrity. Grunfeld is here because Grunfeld is following the Leonsis mandate - do just well enough to keep the Post from jumping down his throat for one more season. Look at the heat the 76ers are getting for committing to a rebuild and sticking to their guns. Yes they've executed it badly at times, but they have a plan. Leonsis would never, ever agree to that because losing affects the bottom line and he doesn't have the balls to risk losing attendance (or the communication skills to rally and educate the fanbase around the plan like the 76ers have done). Ted doesn't care about hanging another title from the rafters, he just cares about making sure the Wizards continue to be profitable and that he doesn't get criticized.

Chaos, I believe that Ted cares, it's just that he is total doofus who gets led around by Ernie. Ted comes across as a bit of a dim bulb.

I'm sure that once we are through the next ownership transition and Ernie is no longer constrained by Ted's "win now" mandate that Ernie will be able to build a great team. As fans, if we just keep the faith and continue to buy those season tickets for a few more decades, we'll be richly rewarded.
Ernie can't be fairly evaluated under the current ownership because of Ted's interference and meddling.

Screw the Ernie thread and Millie's troll-thread, what's your move Ted?
Ernie Grunfeld's constructed team fell flat on its face with no playoffs, no real chance at KD and no draft pick.
Ted better fire Ernie's ass as-soon as we are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

Full house against the Timberwolves on a Friday night? Mission accomplished, as long as there's enough suckers to buy season tickets and enough marketable "young stars" on the roster, Leonsis could care less.
Grunfeld is doing a bang up job, everything is going according to plan, can't control injuries, tough luck, the future is bright.

I say they're going to go on one more winning streak and with a couple unexpected wins to get our hopes up again before they fold.
