funny story about giannis getting drafted

Came across this funny story from the 2013 draft about how we acquired Giannis. Some Jazz guys were telling it on their post game show. Starts at about 12 mins

I'll summarise it if you can't be bothered listening, some of you have probably heard it before. Basically there was a team that really wanted Giannis and saw his potential. So they tried to hide him from everyone else. According to the Jazz guy they basically housed Giannis right up until the draft to make sure he didnt work out for other teams. Then on draft day they were like WTF when the bucks picked giannis out of nowhere. Presumably he never worked out for us and we didnt have his medical records or anything.

It's very likely that the other team was the Atlanta Hawks who had the 17th pick in the draft. It is rumoured that Larry Drew brought the information about Giannis from the hawks when he was hired here and that's why we drafted him. So for all his faults, we owe him that lol

#2) For the greatest tank job in the history of the franchise for Jabari.

And both are now the cornerstones of the franchise.

This goes with one of my theories that Tony Mandarich was one of the best draft picks in the history of the Packers.

Had we picked anyone of the other players in the hall of fame from that draft like Barry Sanders we very possibly end up like the Lions, Barry would always get the Lions good enough for the playoffs but never close to a contender. Instead that pick was so awful it helped the franchise clean house. Which brings in Ron Wolf who brings in Mike Holmgren and trades for Favre and the rest his history.

Sorry wrong sport but it is possible we could be looking at the Larry Drew era as the best thing that ever happened to the Bucks in the last 30 years. We could be discussing the Championship year(s) with Giannis and Jabari and thinking back to Larry Drew as one of the defining moments.

I have never heard this before. Anyone know if there is any truth to this? I mean the timing is right and the story makes some sense logically but we did say Hammond went over and scouted him quite a bit. Either way, thank God we got him. Like holy **** he could be the greatest Buck all time. He has that potential. He is already my fav Buck ever. I imagine he is many of yours too.

A lot of teams scouted him/knew who he was but many were unconvinced of his talent since he trained with YMCA players half the time (reportedly). Danny ainge went to greece like 3 times and still ended up picking kelly olynyk. Donnie nelson of the Mavericks wanted to pick him 13th but mark cuban convinced him to trade that pick to boston.

Maybe the Hawks had scouted him much longer and knew stuff that everyone else didn't. And Hammond found out how bad they wanted him + probably wasn't keen on anyone else in that weak draft. Tough break for Atlanta lmfao. They were also one of the first teams to discover Porzingis and made a promise to draft him with their first rounder in 2014 but porzingis pulled his name out of the draft

I think i have already post it here.
Hawks were the team who assured Giannis' agent at that time G.Panou that they will draft him at 17.
George Panou knew it.Thanassis knew it.But they didn't told this to Giannis because they want him to live the moment.
Giannis had Noel as no1 on his board.So when he saw that Noel drafted at No6 he became nervous and said to Panou..."We are gonna get embarassed.I m not gonna be drafted"..But Panou and Thanassis already knew that Atlanta will get him at no17.
Bucks came up out of nowhere.
I don't know if it was Hammonds' or Drew's decision to get him but they had already check him out in a game here in Greece along with Hawks' and Mavericks' scouters.
Giannis had a great game that day.

Hammond has said a couple times that the Bucks have an Italian/euro scout who told them about Giannis. Then Babcock went over to see Giannis play a couple times and reported it back to Hammond that they both really liked him. Hammond then took it from there.

Interesting theory and I'll admit I'd never thought of that. There's a lot of "what-if's", when it comes to the Packers' turnaround. Had Majkowski not held out in 1990 and then later that year, not gotten his shoulder blown out by Freddie Joe Nunn, we probably don't see the absurd Tomzcak/Kiel joke of 1991, the subsequent hiring of Wolf, etc. As for the Giannis story, it's just good that he's ours, no matter how he got here.

I have to come clean. On draft day I was hoping for Sergey Karasev and was disappointed when we didn't pick him. Literally 2 hours later after learning about Giannis I was stoked but i'm still disappointed in my immediate reaction. Forgive me friends.

If Larry Drew was responsible for getting us both Giannis and Jabari I feel like he could end up the greatest guy in Bucks history.

Larry Drew was clueless on Giannis. They got him tapes during the draft process once the Bucks were interested and then he was impressed.

Didn't listen to the interview but supposedly Atlanta and Toronto really wanted hiim.
