Official Miami Heat 2016 Offseason Thread : Free Agency/Trades (part VI) - Get in the Room

Post#1 » by RexBoyWonder » Sun Mar 27, 2016 10:35 am

Main goal - keep everyone (?)

It's hard but doable. But we need to forget about new established free agents.

Quick breakdown :

Estimated salary cap = 92 Mil

Already on the books :

Bosh - 23.7 Mil$
TJ - 1.3 (cap hold, other teams can offer MLE, we can offer a little more after we use all cap space).
Dragic - 15.9
Winslow - 2.6
Richardson - 0.8

Mcbob - 5.8 - (should be traded without issue with the cap jumping up and teams looking to spend)

Expected to be resigned :

Whiteside - 20 (his max is 21, we can offer slightly bigger raises due to having his early bird rights)
Wade - 12 mil (3 years deal)

Total payroll after Mcbob trade : 76 Mil $

Cap holds for 5 roster spots : ~2.8 Mil

Leaves us with ~13 Mil to spend on Deng/Booty Joe. Maybe give Deng the entire 13, and use an exception on Joe. Hard to tell what kind of money he's about to get at his age.

Minimum players signed after filling cap room :

Amare - Vet minmum
Beno - Vet minmum
Haslem - Vet minimum
Dleague Backup C - minimum
Undrafted backup PF - Minimum
???

[*]Everything changes if we can lure Durant, but don't see that happening, not this summer anyway.

[*][*]Bosh's salary will be on the books next year regardless of his comeback/health situation.

Honestly I don't hate on Green like most do, he's a minimum player for a reason.

He's had a bad offensive year but **** happens, he's trying and playing hard. I wouldn't mind keeping him for the minimum next year, really wouldn't. When he's on he's a good useful player.

It's not like there's a ton of better players making the minimum out there, people expectations were too high because he started out great and really fell hard. He's not as good as he looked in pre-season and not as bad as he's been lately. For a third string, he's fine. If he has a good year, he's great for that role. I actually think he can do better next year, he's wasn't used to playing hard defense, I think with more time here he can become more consistent.

Gerald should probably get clean military haircut, his non professional sideshow bob hairdo seems to be affecting his game and concentration.

Ever since he started this hairdo coupled with the flacka incident he's been in that funk.

Funny hairdos tend to affect your game in a bad way. Gerald getting back to his old 6th man of the year candidate self could be huge for us, he could win us a couple of playoffs game.

With Okafor on the trading block would you guys want to try and structure a trade for him involving McRoberts.

I remember we inquired about him during the trade deadline.

I think other teams could offer the Sixers better packages.

Plus, idk if Okafor fits with Bosh already here (and Whiteside if he re-signs here).

We don't have the assets to get Okafor, and I'd much rather have a defensive Center like Whiteside then an offensive one like Okafor.

I do wish we could somehow grab Robert Covington out of Philly, I **** love his game. He's the 6'8 version of J-Rich. He'd kill on a good team, he's getting lost in the Sixers debacle.

Since Deng/JJ are older + contracts situation isn't clear, I think a good younger SF/PF that can really shot and rebound is our biggest need this offseason.

Worst case scenario... (I'm good at those). If Chris can't play next year, we should ask the league for an injury exemption and use it to sign Joe Jackson (it's limited to the non-taxpayer MLE).

We would at least have:

G: Dragic, Wade, Richardson, TJ
F: Winslow, Deng, Johnson, McRoberts
C: Whiteside, STAT (signed to vet minimum)

Haslem isn't getting minutes anymore. Maybe he should be a coach instead?

I think it's tough to get rid of McRoberts. I was hoping he would play better by now to improve his market value.

Note: When Chris comes back we can still keep Joe Johnson, but the league would only grant the exemption if they think he can't play. Since that is a real possibility until he gets cleared we might be able to use at least 5.6M of his cap.

We could sign fill the roster with other players that can be helpful, either vets like Udrih. I like the idea of adding Weber instead so we'll have a rookie to develop, but we have space for both.

Here are two forwards who might not get drafted but still have great potential:

Derrick Jones (2/15/97, 6-7, 190 lbs, SF, UNLV, Freshman) - very athletic. great dunker

http://basketball.realgm.com/player/Derrick-Jones/Summary/59508

Bennie Boatwright (7/13/96, 6-10, 220 lbs, SF/PF) - A fine shooter. His stats look poor but he was improving every game.

http://basketball.realgm.com/player/Bennie-Boatwright/Summary/76229

I really think the maximum number of rookies we can develop is two. Otherwise, they just won't get playing time. We can fill the rest of the roster with vets especially if we go far in the postseason:

G: Dragic, Wade, Richardson, TJ, Udrih, Weber
F: Winslow, Deng, Joe Johnson, McRoberts, Boatwright
C: Whiteside, STAT, (Bosh)

We can develop Boatwright in Sioux Falls. Another possibility is Whittington, Putney, or one of the other D-Leaguers (Coty Clarke) we've been discussing.

Hyde: As Heat season rises, hunt for Durant lurks in the background

t's not who for the Heat. It's how.

It's not why this summer. It's what.

It's not whether Heat president Pat Riley, even while immersed in the regular season's final chapter, privately plots how to land soon-to-be free-agent Kevin Durant come July and re-sign Hassan Whiteside in as ambitious a plan as possible.

It's how the Heat's limited dollars could stretch for this to work. It's what chance anyone would give this plan if Riley and his Heat dream team weren't surely plotting it.

On Monday, the Heat beat Brooklyn, 110-99, in AmericanAirlines Arena to keep an improbable season moving forward with Chris Bosh on the bench again in a suit and Goran Dragic out sick for the night.

This is remarkable, the Heat's ability to keep winning this season and chase something meaningful in the playoffs. It just won't end where Riley's championship mindset demands. This season can't.

Riley watched the win from the a seat at the end of the court, the game running before him and the theory of everything championship surely spinning in his mind.

Six years ago, Riley constantly mused in the office over his "Triple Crown," as he called signing LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Bosh that associates chuckled over his big thoughts. What's he call this one — The "Durant Double?" "Twice as Nice?"

Riley no doubt wants to see more of Whiteside, who had a career-high 27 points on 12-of-16 shooting Monday. Doesn't everyone need to see him play this way in the playoffs, when the stakes rise and game can turn medieval?

That will show if he's ready to win now, or needs more seasoning, and so just how much help he will be in recruiting Durant. Because if you're Durant and have other choices, as he will, the question becomes the one that helped send LeBron James back to Cleveland:

What's the best place to win?

Wade is 35 next year and will still help in the short term. Ditto for Joe Johnson, assuming he's back. If Riley gets in a room with Durant, his sales pitch will center on the young players moving toward their prime — Whiteside, a rapidly emerging Josh Richardson (16 points Monday), Justise Winslow and Tyler Johnson.

Throw Durant in that mix and is it a contender? When they're already making Cleveland a little edgy this year?

There's the pipe dream. Reality could be another matter. If the Heat trade Josh McRoberts, they have $43 million to spend this summer — maybe $46 million if the cap rises more than initially expected, as is being reported.

That's not enough for Durant, Whiteside and Wade, much less Johnson. So do you scale back the plan? Wait a year to see if Bosh returns from medical questions or his contract is scraped from the salary cap?

Or do you turn your blood cold and trade a good asset like Goran Dragic and his $15.9 million salary this summer to give more cash? If it means Durant coming?

It's still March, still the regular season, still a long way to go for the Heat. But questions are percolating. Even everyday moves these days are translated as having a sub-text to them.

On Sunday, for instance, Wade supposedly sent out karmic waves of Heat-itude on Instagram. There he was in various pictures riding in a power boat on the bay with his wife, Gabrielle Union, Heat executive Nick Arison and other friends.

"My kinda Sunday," he said. "Good laughs, good fun, good friends & good food."

How'd that look to free agents feeling the last bite of winter?

"I'm not trying to get all the free agents," Wade said, laughing, before Monday's game. "I'm just saying this is the place to be. Hopefully, all of you who live here are enjoying it."

This is a fun season and will lead to a fun playoff stretch. But make no mistake: The next big stakes game for Riley comes this summer. He'll get in a room with Durant. And that's where their next championship hopes will be decided.

It's amazing to me Green is now the one guy most of us don't want on the court, when he was our best free agency signings besides getting back Goran, and our draft. AND for the price.

He has the skills and potential but his confidence has taken such a hit. Played so good for us up until that one incident. It's like he was forever ashamed, lost all his powers. Thank GOD Richardson has now emerged, or our depth would have taken a huge hit.

He was pretty good for a while after that, wasn't he? I remember he had a pretty good December, and he did a decent job as a starter when Deng missed a handful of games. Iirc, he started to struggle when HWR jinxed him in January. I think he was banged up at the time as well, but he had to play since so many other guys were already out.

It's been a pretty interesting season. A blessed one for the most part:

- Wade has been healthy.
- Bosh blood clots come back but Goran, Deng & Winslow step up.
- Green in a horrible slump but J-Rich has emerged.
- When we thought our team couldn't get any better we land Joe Johnson.

Our luck has just been rising since Lebron bolted. Next is the offseason. Will we continue to be blessed? We just need Durant in a room w/ Riles - that's all we need for our luck to continue to rise!
If u don't want 2b here, the way things work, u don't like it, then don't b here. U have 2 stand on something. If Miami ain't standing on something, they become alot of these organizations trying 2 find their identity. This is the culture, bro -Wade

I think the Green signing confirmed that we're better off sticking with bball IQ over talent. Better to bring in guys that fit what we're trying to do than to try and turn a 30 year old like Green into a Heat basket ball player.

According to Le Batard :

1.Hassan has been fined multiple times because of banned social media usage
2.Battier was there on a Hassan tryout before 2013/4 season, Was not impressed. Hassan laid down on the floor after some sprints, Battier wrote him off.
3.Now Battier is a fan. Sais we should pay the man. He can't grasp the change. "perfect storm" of mental, getting in shape, Heat culture, opportunity on court.
4. Heat are going to offer him Max, but will ask for a discount in order to maximize cap.
5. Battier sais the playoffs, which are a DIFFERENT ANIMAL, will say a lot. If he can absorb scouting session, adjustments, pressure - then it's an easy max. If he struggles - might give Heat a negotiation angle.
6. Heat front office Believe Durant is NOT a pipe dream

Wonder what #1 is all about? Would seem petty to try to regulate how he uses his social media so long as he isn't saying anything about the team.

I remember he had that "caged lion" instagram post earlier in the season when Spo benched him at the end of a game. Maybe got fined for stuff like that.

I feel like no one has reported Durant's interested in the Heat...except the Heat lol. Oh well, would be silly not to give it a shot.

Return to Miami Heat
