Signing Pau gasol?

Post#1 » by StunnaStan » Sun Apr 3, 2016 2:44 pm

Just want to know what your guys take is on signing gasol in the offseason. I think his game compliments the team and having him in with dre would make dre more efficient. Only things that i would chalk up as a negative is gasols footspeed on defense. What yall think?

Never really thought about it but that would be a nice addition for sure. We could also use more experienced vet talent this offseason as we are young enough.

No on both.
Gaol is 35.
Noah is 31.
Don't want guys that old with our young core.

Yes on Pau. Don't care how old he is. We'd be signing him to win in 2017, not 2020. He'd fit perfect next to Drummond and as his backup C.

That doesn't even make sense. There's nothing wrong with having vets (and Pau Gasol is a damn good vet) playing with our core. Do you see what San Antonio is doing?

I don't really see how he fits. We have the nice problem that the roster is actually in very good shape at the moment. Backup point guard is the only position that looks easy to upgrade. Other roster moves going forward will either be minor...or be made because we're getting an established star.

Yeah, Gasol worked out really well alongside Dwight Howard. I'm sure he and Drummond would work together famously.

No thanks.

Why would he sign here over a contender? He's turning 36 this summer and I can't imagine him playing that much longer.

Given the amount of money free agents are going to cost this off-season, SVG and Bower will do one of two things:

1) Find another awesome trade or two to fill the backup PG and backup PF spots
2) Spend nearly all of our available cap on the backup PG spot (the really critical need)

I'm sure #1 is the primary goal, given their recent success with trades, but it may not be possible. The sticker price on actually signing guys this summer is going to shock you. If you thought Reggie and Baynes were expensive, wait till you see what players are getting this time. For example, Jeremy Lin took a tiny deal from Charlotte when his options and teams' money dried up -- he's going to cash in for 8-12 million a year this summer. Max for Harrison Barnes, max for Nic Batum, and max for anyone above average. It's going to be ridiculous, and the best part for Detroit is that our front office saw it coming. We're already set for next year, give or take a couple backups and/or a great deal falling in our laps again.

Guys half as good as Marcus Morris will be making twice what he does. It's sick.

I'd be very happy to get gasol, but I can't see him coming to Detroit. He'll stay in chi or go to a contender.
I'd like to get Noah, but with baynes already signed, it wouldn't make sense

Gasol was interested in signing his way to OKC, Heat, and CHI when he was a FA, all at the time contenders or were 1 piece away from being true contenders. Literally slim to no chance he even picks up the phone from Stan.

I can see him going to the Heat or pull a David West to join CLE on a discount. I can also see him go back out west conference and play with his brother or something.
