Very smart move for him. Get in the much much weaker draft

The issue with Thon Maker is he is not good. Has he ever had a truly good camp? Guy is so over-hyped it is ridiculous, also it's no lock he is eligible.

Wonder where he goes. NBADraft projects him at #25 in their 2017 mocks.

If he's eligible, really smart move, they don't have college evidence he isn't good.

I completely agree, Skal's freshman year probably had something to do with this as well.

Already 19 so i think he will be eligible. I'm with you, this guy is a great highlight tape but very very over hyped player. The teams won't see a ton of negative tape on him against good competition and he is a guy that is going to look great in team workouts. Athletic 7 footer who can shoot from deep in an open gym.

Maker is a lottery pick in this years weak draft, NBA has no real reason to deny him since he qualifies the draft requirements, at least 19 and 1 year past high school, Maker is 19 and graduated high school last June playing at post grad at a Prep this last year.

I think that's part of it, he's hoping the hype will boost him before people see what he's like at the college level.

With someone like Skal though, yes, his stock suffered, but I think the year in college probably helps his development long term. Maker's going to be making a massive jump which he's not ready for.

Well they're going to see him in workouts to see if he can play with college players. If not, then they'll also have a chance to see him in the D-league. The workouts and combine are going to be REALLY important for him. It could be that he just hasn't been coached well (which is what I speculate) and hasn't played with great teammates. No matter what I would still take him in the first round. And if I were a team in my 20s, I would not want him going to a San Antonio or Golden State in fear of him actually working out and missing out on a big opportunity. He's going to be a tricky pick, which is great for his stock. He's going to get paid without proving himself too much.

Thing is Maker has shot poorly at the camps he's been at lately, so his outside shot is also overhyped. He's a good rim runner, with energy, and solid athleticism. But the star upside is a pipe-dream

Ya but those workouts are still different than actual games. Thon is a guy that is going to look like a #1 pick in pre draft workouts. He is definitely going to go 1st round this year and probably lottery. I can see a team like Boston picking him up with one of their 1st rounders. The dude definitely has a ton of potential.

I was at the UA showcase in BK and watched shot, both in warmups and in the game and in the 3point contest - he isn't a good shooter right now. He isnt a good player right now

I was never high on him way less after playing ball in Canada and not going through college, in terms of helping his development, he is far from ready to compete for minutes in the NBA and his upside is not that great regardless (he lacks an elite 1st step and the type of game he tries to have needs of those skills), he looks like an energy big/face-up big mix, that lacks the size in terms of strength and the elite athleticism.
Likely best suited as 2nd round gamble as of now.

Did you watch him play at all this season for his prep school? He had some monster shooting displays vs high level comp during the grind session . anybody who passes on maker for skal is drunk. The latter has worst physical tools and not a sign of a jumper. Even worst if he slips to late first and someone takes diallo (who couldn't even see the floor @ Kansas) over him , I'll laugh my ass off.

Considering the rule is you have to be a year removed from high school, I don't see this sticking
