At some point the upside of Maker makes him a no-brainer pick.. but where is that?
10.. 20... 30?
After all the hype there's been little substance.. mocks had him in the mid 20's for the 2017 draft

Yeah, don't know what to make of Maker.. Ok with him if we get to pick 12th, but don't know much about him. The only long-range prospect I'm hoping for in '18 is Deandre Ayton.
Should be an interesting summer.. Really pivotal, IMO, because we can either end up setting up a 60-win team with upside(!) or a 55 win team with no upside..

Thon Maker makes perfect sense for us if he lasts until the Dallas pick.
Very risky to say he could be worth a top 5 pick. Depends on how workouts go. There is a chance that he has the highest ceiling in the draft though, so someone make overdraft him. People don't want to miss out on the next Antekoupno.

Maker is currently #44 on the DX top 100 prospect ranking.

What's going on with Maker? Caught all the hype but haven't seen much since.
Anyone seen him play?

Maker could be a target for the Philly pick, but not in the 1st, at least not if everyone that has "declared" stay in, we will see how the list looks come 25/5.

I know every player is different.. but with the recent success and hype of Giannis and Porzingis, I think someone will take Maker higher than I would be willing to
Our pick in the 20's? maybe, depending on who slides on the night

He had a chance to go to college in 15/16 and decided to do a 5'th year of high school in Canada. Has a change to go to college in 16/17 and wants to go pro, in spite of not having rave reviews about recent play. Sounds very much to me like a Gerald Green situation where he wants to get a first contract before people realize he is no where near ready to play. i would be very wary of using a high pick for him, best thing would be early second and send him to Europe for a few years IMO.

His hype was mainly from folks who'd never actually seen him play. He's long and athletic but a major project, and I'm not sure he's the best between the ears. Would not use a 1st on him, even in this draft.

Dude basically made a name for himself by beasting some scrawney 6' white dudes and then having those youtube videos go viral. The fact that he severely struggled in showcase events when matched up against legit competition is quite telling. Some potential there, but he's raw as fuuuuuuck.

Thon Maker makes James Young look like Buddy Hield in terms of being able to contribute right away.
He is four years away on a team that should be more attuned to contending for a Title the next four years.
Where are they going to get the time and minutes to develop him? Ehhhh, maybe they can draft and stash him in Europe
and he can acquire some viable NBA skills.

Thon Maker with a 1st rounder would almost be as disappointing as drafting Melo at 22. Maker is not that good. He's got the god-given size and athleticism, but come on - the guy gets abused by other elite prospects when he shows up for the Nike tournaments. Take him in the 2nd round, then let him play overseas.

Did they allow Make to declare for the draft? Did I miss anything?
Good assessment:

No I think we're all still waiting to hear word from the NBA to see if he's eligible. I doubt it though.
I'd take our own pick with him. Hell no to BK's pick. Nope to Dallas's pick. But our pick will be what 23ish? I'd take the flier on him there.

Abused? Really?? Got a link to where all these other prospects were abusing him? I must of seen the wrong player.

Maker played hard and was very active on the glass but really struggled on the offensive end, bobbling passes (which he did all week), forcing shots at the rim and showing below average basketball instincts. Maker is a unique prospect given his size, length and mobility but the game was too fast for him on Saturday and he didn't show much in terms of touch or skill in the game after an up and down week of practice.
http://www.draftexpress.com/article/Basketball-Without-Borders-Global-Camp-Evaluations-Power-Forwards-5370/
Outlook: Was a year or two older (on paper) than all the other prospects in attendance, but did not have an overwhelmingly productive camp. Somewhat stuck between the power forward and center positions. Long-term he is likely better suited for a role as an energy-giving big man rather than the superstar he was being hyped as. May need a few years in college to continue to improve his skill-level and frame.
To be fair though, at least he's competitive and has good work ethic. Again, I'm on board with him as a 2nd rounder.
http://www.draftexpress.com/article/Thon-Maker-Eschews-College-Basketball--Will-Attempt-to-Enter-NBA-Draft-5415/
His competitiveness, physicality and intensity level are impressive for a 7-footer with a 9'3 standing reach, and the fact that he's been able to add some bulk to his upper body and can knock down an open 3-pointer at times bodes well for his role-playing potential. So will his work ethic and strong character. Still, his lack of offensive polish, pencil thin legs, average feel for the game and explosiveness suggest that may be the extent of his long-term upside. And considering how big the jump is from high school basketball to the NBA, it will likely take years to achieve that, which some teams may feel is not worth the time or effort it will require.

Maker is basically the same type of prospect as Cheick Diallo, who nobody at this point thinks is worth a 1st round pick.
If Maker pans out, odds are high, like Jermaine O'Neal and Amir Johnson, the team that actually drafts him will not be the ones to see the fruits of that. You're basically committing yourself to 2-3 years of carrying him on your bench / in the NBDL / in Europe.

Maker? Nah. I want Sabonis with the Dallas pick.
