Thon Maker fit with Lakers

Post#1 » by TKainZero » Mon Apr 4, 2016 5:34 am

With Thon announcing his intention to join the 2026 NBA draft, it has to be brought up in the weak draft, particularly if the Lakers end up picking 3rd.

Thon is a very interesting prospect, and I wonder how he would project with the lakers Youth of Russell/Randle/Clarkson.

Could he operate as a center next to Randle? Using his length to anchor the defense? And on offense, have the shooting ability to stretch the floor and allow randle to operate down low?

Thon has been talked about for a while, declaring in this weak draft, he could make moves.
Thon could also play PF with randle at SF (in name only), if thon could hit 3
I think Thon could be a versitle player at the NBA level with his length/shooting

I think he has to be in the board in the top5 for the lakers.

He has huge physical upside, but by all accounts he's pretty far away from being an even average player in the NBA. He's too skinny to play the 5 and we don't need another 4. I think he would be a good gamble if we were picking in the later first round, but at 1 - 3 there are far better prospects available who would be able to contribute much sooner than Maker.

Would really prefer solid players with upside than someone that looks like who came from 2k.

I watched him in a Canada All Star game they had last summer and he was awful. Judging solely off that, I'll pass. Jamal Murray, for comparisons sake, was the star and scored 25 points or something. Maker didn't even looked like he belonged.

I see shades of Schea Cotton in Thon Maker's career. He would be better served playing in college for a year or two in Duke, Kentucky, or some elite college.

Im all for players getting to the NBA as quick as possible, but this guy can use a year in college, and itd probably help his draft stock.

If somehow he falls to our 2nd round pick, id give him a shot. Even tho he'll prolly end up like the other 2nd round centers we've drafted in the past decade.

I've only read about Maker and never have seen him play other than youtube highlights. But just looking at the guy, I am reminded of Hasheem Thabeet a lot. Highly touted and have the physical tools to become something special, but incredibly raw as a player and doesn't look anywhere near NBA ready.

There is no way he can play center in the NBA anytime soon given how skinny he is. There are prospects who HAVE to go to college to get themselves ready for the NBA, and Maker is definitely one of those players. Hell, from the way he looks right now, he needs about three or four years of college ball to prepare himself. Good centers in the modern NBA isn't that hard to find any more, considering how much the position has been simplified (rebound, block shots and finish lobs) in recent years. And that works against Maker as well, because teams are much less willing to take risk with players because of their size. He might be a decent second round pick, who basically gets stashed away for a couple of years in D League or something to develop his game and body. But blowing a lottery pick on him is borderline insane in my opinion.

Are guys really talking about Thon Maker like he's actually the next phenom still? Stop gobbling up hoopmixtape vids on youtube. He has some talent but I saw in his scouting vid struggling against Skal Labrisse in the post. That's not a good sign.

no thanks, as much as he's rep'ed as the aussie KG, he's more likely to turn out like thabeet instead of antetokounmpo

Picking Thon Maker from top 3 would be a worse reach than Anthony Bennett.

I would defiantly consider him as a stretch 5. Work him out. measure him. see how he does from nba 3 point line. Imagine If He measures in at 7-2 with a 7-4 wing span? The Porzingis effect.

No he's not. He's much taller than KG. The only thing they have in common is they are both extremely darked skinned.

oh if he falls to the 2nd round pick this is a no brainer. You have to take a chance on a guy who could be potentially a great player in the league but in that way he is a project
