so he was consistently in the low 90s? if so that is a good news. I was worried he might be throwing cheese down the middle with 86 mph batting practice pitches down the middle at every inning.

if he is at 90 to 91 consistently with occasional92 (which doesn't really matter if he is at 90-91 constantly) I would think his reperatoire of breaking pitches would be good enough to be himself as long as he can locate them. if he is throwing 86-87 junk, he is gonna need a prayer.

The book on him is that his changeup has this huge differential from his fastball....getting down to somewhere in the mid 70s.
Maybe that might make a slight dip in velo acceptable.

edit:
this post is about Kazmir.

yeah but from my humble experience as a young man, or even as a younger middle aged man a decade ago, there was a significant difference facing a 85 mph pitches in the batting cage versus 90 mph pitches even from a machine with predictable pitching timing. 75 mph change up works good with 85 mph fastball but if you can just sit on a fastball with the mindset of a changeup, or simply guess right, it is very hitterable. from a 90 to 92 going down to 75 is a drastic change unless you are guessing a change up and sitting on the right location.

only pitcher not named Greg Maddux the professor to excel while throwing mid to high 80s fastball and still be very successful in the last 30 years as a starter for me, was Jamie Moyer.

Kazmir's Fastball

Post#44 » by Ranma » Tue Apr 5, 2016 2:09 am

I think Kazmir's excuse, reasoning, or whatever is that he was not concerned with his velocity in Spring Training and that he tended to ramp up his pitch as it gets closer to Opening Day. His thing is to juice the fastball whenever he needs to in order to get away from being the thrower (as opposed to pitcher) he was early on in his career. We'll see how it works out for him this season.

I surely hope that is the case and Scott is going to do his usual for us this season. we need just his career average. regression would mean a world of hurt for our rotation until Ryu and Mac are back

Ahhh.

Let's hope that it's not an issue. Supposedly he was throwing in the mid 80s because he hadnt "dialed it up."

But like I said, I'm just glad Wood has his velocity back so that the velocity struggles only lie with ONE pitcher (because Kazmir's velo has been dipping down slightly year after year)...and I saw it with my own eyes...but here...
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/welcome-back-alex-wood/

Even better, fangraphs profiles his problems as coming from his dip in velo the last year.

Profile: Wood fell several levels from his lofty 2014 perch, as his 25% strikeout rate cratered (17%) and his 80% strand rate normalized (73%). The losses all came from the fastball. The velocity on the fastball dropped another tick it could ill-afford to lose, falling to 89-90 mph on average. Batters went from not really chasing it at all in 2014 (20%, good for 59th out 62 SPs w/1500 fastballs thrown) to eww-get-it-away-from-me-now (16%, 60th of 61) in 2015. The result was almost a 100-point jump in OPS off of the pitch. The changeup wasn't great in '14, but contributed a bit to that big strikeout rate. It was worthless as a strikeout offering in '15, though, with the 5% whiff rate ranking dead-last among the 45 pitchers who threw at least 400 of them. The curveball was still good, but not elite, and the troubles with the other pitches limited the impact of the hammer. Ground balls might end up being his key to success because it's hard to envision the fastball reaching those 2014 heights again, which brings the ceiling down substantially. If he can churn out a 55%+ kind of groundball rate, it takes the pressure off of him in terms of regaining the lost strikeouts. Maybe he can pattern himself after teammate Brett Anderson -- fewer groundballs, but more strikeouts. (Paul Sporer)

Inverted Symbols?

Wait. Are the "less than" (<) symbols supposed to be reversed as "greater than" (>) ones? No biggie. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

No rush for an answer. Have a good night as well, Neddy.

Same lineup as yesterday except Barnes in AJ's spot.

Nice to see Turner getting back to back days in. Wasn't sure we were there with him.

wish Trayce could start one game. I'm willing to eat crow if he stinks. Just want him to play.
Hopefully we get a lead and he comes in for defense.

Game 2 Against the Padres

Post#58 » by Ranma » Wed Apr 6, 2016 12:05 am

I'm looking forward to seeing Austin Barnes play tonight. Joc Pederson needs the regular at-bats and was hitting the ball hard yesterday, so I'm fine with Trayce Thompson being the 4th outfielder for now. However, I'm not going to complain if he's taking Carl Crawford's spot in the lineup.

As an aside, the Diamondbacks are claiming that Zack Greinke had flu-like symptoms yesterday and yet still ran him out there for their opening day.

Puig in the Batter's Box

Post#60 » by Ranma » Wed Apr 6, 2016 2:33 am

I'm liking Puig's eye at the plate. He drew a walk yesterday and just got another one in his first at-bat today.
